Dr. Stephen C. Milt, age 80, of Plymouth, MA, passed away at home on Saturday, February 23, 2019 following a year-long illness.
Stephen Milt was born on June 12, 1938 to Harry and Beatrice (Weinstein) Milt in New York, NY. He was raised in Washington, DC, Mount Vernon, VA and Queens, NY, graduating from Bayside High School in Queens, NY in 1956.
In 1961, Stephen received his B.A. in Biology from Antioch College, and in 1965, he graduated from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. After completing his ophthalmology and surgical training at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital, Dr. Milt served two years in active duty as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy Medical Corp. While serving in U.S. Navy, Dr. Milt received training at the Washington Hospital Center in pediatric ophthalmology under Dr. Marshall M. Parks. Throughout his career, Dr. Milt diagnosed and successfully treated hundreds of children who had strabismus and amblyopia. In 1971, Dr. Milt began service to the Plymouth community when he opened his ophthalmology practice in Plymouth on Court St. and later moved to the Plymouth Medical Building. In 1986, Dr. Milt moved his practice to Long Pond Road in Plymouth, and, in 1998, he closed his solo private practice to join a multispecialty ophthalmology group, now known as Kadrmas Eye Care New England. As an ophthalmologist for 50 years, Dr. Milt took pride in caring for patients throughout their lifetimes.
Stephen Milt was an active distance runner and cyclist. He began running short distances in his 40s to stay in shape, and grew to love the sport. He completed over a hundred distance races, including 22 consecutive Boston Marathons. Steve was an active member of the Marshfield Road Runners for 30 years. In his 70s, he began mountain biking, and he continued as a competitive athlete until 2017, when he completed the D2R2 100km cycling trail race. Steve was also active in the local folk music community, booking concerts and coffee houses for the South Shore Folk Music Club for 18 years.
Stephen Milt is survived by his wife Ellen Mazer Milt, partners for 58 years. They met at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio and were married in 1961. Dr. Milt is also survived by his three sons, Stephen S. Milt, Peter A. Milt, Robert A. Milt, daughters-in-law, Sarah Milt, Lorianne Milt and Stephanie Loranger and eight grandchildren.
