Distinguished Antioch College alumnus and former trustee Rozell “Prexy” Nesbitt ’67 will be honored by The Social Justice Initiative (SJI), a unit at the University of Illinois at Chicago, for his exemplary career of service and activism.

SJI is hosting a symposium and reception, Honoring the Social Justice Career of Prexy Nesbitt, on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 from 1:00 PM – 7:30 PM CDT at the University of Illinois in Chicago in Student Center East. The event is free and open to the public; symposium tickets make be reserved at HonoringPrexy.eventbrite.com.

The program for the day is as follows:

1:00 PM – “Prexy’s Chicago: MLK Jr. to Harold Washington”
2:45 PM – “Solidarity with Southern African: A Lifelong Commitment”
4:15 PM – Tributes to Prexy from mentees, students and friends
4:45 PM – Closing remarks from Prexy Nesbitt
5:00 PM – Reception


Chicagoan Prexy Nesbitt has spent more than five decades as an educator, activist, and speaker on Africa, foreign policy, and racism. He was a national and international leader supporting the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. Closer to home, he worked as an educator, activist and union organizer and served as special assistant to Chicago’s Mayor, the late Harold Washington.

Nesbitt is currently the Presidential Fellow in Peace Studies at Chapman University’s Department of Peace Studies. He is a beloved educator, international delegation coordinator, and social justice leader who has traveled to Africa over a hundred times and has taught and mentored hundreds of students and activists. Nesbitt’s life and work have been widely profiled, and he makes an appearance in the two-part PBS series Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise in which he talks about his involvement as Martin Luther King Jr.’s bodyguard during a 1966 march in Chicago.

Antiochians Act for Justice

‘Act for Justice’ is a landmark of an Antioch College education.

The College is known through the efforts of its students and graduates—exemplified by Prexy Nesbitt among many others—for offering an education that prepares and inspires people to embrace and lead socially responsible acts of change.
