In an article for counterpunch, Karl Grossman ’64 recalls the words of Indian writer Arundhati Roy who sees the COVID-19 pandemic as a portal or gateway to a new world.

He quotes, “Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.”

Moreover, Grossman argues that it is our choice if we wish to walk through this portal or to drag “the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our … dead ideas, our dead rivers, and smoky skies behind us.”
