Eleanor Joan Hochhauser passed away on February 12, 2021 at age 96. She was the daughter of Edward and Ethel Hochhauser of Hartsdale, NY.
She was the youngest of three children and is survived by her brother Robert Hochhauser ’44, her nephew Dr. Edward Hochhauser III, her great-nieces Sheri Tisch, Sue Penchina, and Kim Shields and her great-nephew Edward Hochhauser IV.
Eleanor graduated in 1947 from Antioch College in Dayton, OH with a degree in Sociology. She was one of only a few women in her graduating class. She went on from Antioch to be the Head of Human Resources for Warner Lambert (Pfizer). Eleanor was a champion of mentoring women in the workplace and was the President of the Women’s HR Association. She worked selflessly behind the scenes to support woman in the workplace. She worked her whole career for Warner Lambert and retired at age 65.
Eleanor enjoyed traveling around the world with her brother Robert and mother Ethel Hochhauser until her mother’s death at 95. She did everything from riding elephants in India to riding camels in Egypt. Eleanor and her brother Robert spent many summers teaching American business at the University of Beijing.
They developed many friendships with their students in China and fellow instructors. They were teaching at the University of Beijing when the Tiananmen Square rebellion occurred. Their students helped them escape Beijing and hide in the countryside until they could safely return to the United States a few months later.
Eleanor continued to travel with her brother Robert extensively up into her 90s. She was a great storyteller of all her traveling adventures. Eleanor was a lifetime member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She was a lifelong season ticket holder of the Metropolitan Opera and the American Ballet Theater at Lincoln Center. She was also a longtime member of Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, NY and a longtime member of Winterthur.
