Dorothy Perkins Montague, age 88, a long-time social worker and hospital social services administrator, died early on Oct. 25, 2021, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., nine days after coiling catheter surgery for a small brain hemorrhage.

Born on Jan. 18, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., she was the youngest of four children of O. Robert Perkins and the former Charlene Johnston. The family also lived in Meriden, Conn., Hagerstown. Md., and Garden City, Long Island, N.Y. She was a 1950 graduate of Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, N.Y. She was a 1950 graduate of Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, N.Y.

Montague attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and married a classmate, Richard Cady Montague ’57, just after they graduated in June 1957.

She also earned a master’s degree in social work from Fordham University in the Bronx.

She served as a social worker at Spence-Chapin Services to Family and Children, an adoption agency in New York, N.Y., and at Methodist Hospital and Brooklyn, N.Y. She also directed the social services departments at Brooklyn Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., and at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, NY.

After living in New York City for 40 years, primarily in Brooklyn, the Montagues moved to Germantown in 1997. She also served as president of the Germantown Neighbors Association. She and her husband, Richard, were married for 60 years, until he died on May 28, 2018.

Montague is survived by her sons, James Montague of Elmwood Park, Ill., and Gray Montague of Pittsburgh, Pa. Grandchildren are Clara Montague of New Haven, Conn., Alice Montague of Oklahoma City, Okla., Avery Montague of Columbus, Ohio, and Grace Montague of Portland, Ore. She’s also survived by her niece Kathy McGuigan and nephew Mark Perkins, both of Calif. Montague was also preceded in death by her parents, sister Margaret Perkins Hofer of Tarrytown, N.Y., brother John Perkins, and brother Arthur Perkins of Moraga, CA. Arrangements for cremation were made with the Burnett & White Funeral Home of Red Hook, N.Y. Interment will be at the Friends Upton Lakes Cemetery in Clinton Corners, N.Y. No immediate services memorials are planned, though a celebration of life event may be held for relatives and friends at a later date.
