Position Summary:

The Central Plant Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and performance of the central geothermal plant equipment and HVAC distribution systems throughout multiple buildings.  The Central Plant Operator monitors central plant controls system daily and responds to any alarms and takes appropriate action to resolve malfunctions or repair issues.

FLSA STATUS: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt

# OF HOURS PER WEEK: 40 Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY

Antioch College is located in the village of Yellow Springs, Ohio – a vibrant progressive community nestled between two nature preserves. Yellow Springs is located 55 miles from the fast-growing city of Columbus, Ohio, and 30 miles from the Dayton metro area.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Operate central plant and perform preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment
  • Maintain and repair the HVAC distribution system up to and including the equipment in each building served by the central geothermal plant
  • Maintain an inventory of parts and supplies for central geo plant and HVAC systems
  • Perform water tests and adjust treatments, as required, in conjunction with the water treatment contractor
  • Monitor and operate the central plant monitoring system and react appropriately to alarms or equipment faults
  • Receive and act appropriately to all emergency and maintenance calls received during non-business hours
  • Conduct regular inspections of central plant equipment and HVAC distribution system
  • Perform various types of maintenance with varying degrees of difficulty on buildings, including, but not limited to: masonry, carpentry, flooring, plumbing, HVAC and electrical
  • Perform other preventative maintenance as directed by supervisor
  • Conduct regular inspections in facilities
  • Maintain clean, well-organized tools, equipment and supply room making sure replacement parts and supplies are at adequate levels
  • Ability to operate machinery and equipment, including carpentry tools, lawn equipment and pickup truck (valid driver’s license necessary)
  • Snow removal for all campus drives, parking areas, mowing and trimming of campus grounds, and campus beautification
  • Follow all OSHA safety practices and procedures.  Assist Director with safety program initiatives and perform regular safety inspections of all campus grounds and buildings
  • Maintain equipment in proper operating condition
  • Other duties are required as the need arises
  • Provide assistance with cost efficiencies and utility audits
  • Ability to work in a college environment where staff, students, parents and alumni are regularly present
  • Strong interpersonal skills and desire to provide a high level of service to all stakeholders.
  • Ability to work side-by-side  with student workers, volunteers and friends of the college
  • Able to work evenings and weekends when necessary
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to read blueprints and schematics

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 5 years experience in HVAC repair
  • Experience with Tridium based control systems.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:   

  • HVAC Certification

PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS: 

  • Ability to stand or walk frequently
  • Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs and lift frequently 
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally
  • Climb up onto and down from equipment or ladders 
  • Able to manipulate small hand tools

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS 

  • May occasionally work in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees 
  • May occasionally walk on slippery surfaces 
  • Noise level in work environment can occasionally be loud
  • Will climb ladders and work off elevated surfaces on an occasional basis
