SUMMARY:Opening Reception-Mia Zapata a place within
DESCRIPTION:Herndon Gallery proudly presents “Mia Zapata: A Place Within\,” an exclusive exhibition featuring a collection of paintings\, prints\, and sculptures by Mia Zapata\, an esteemed alumna from the 1980s. During her time at Antioch College in the mid-eighties\, Mia crafted many of the stunning pieces showcased in this exhibition. Notably\, Mia was also the frontwoman for the influential band\, The Gits. The band originated in Antioch in 1986 and later relocated to Seattle\, with Mia leading the charge alongside fellow band members guitarist Joe Spleen\, bass player Matt Dresdner\, and drummer Steve Moriarty\, all classmates of Mia’s at Antioch. \n“As The Gits flourished in the Pacific Northwest\, they became the focal point of a thriving music and social sub-scene\, attracting a host of talented musicians\, artists\, and unique individuals\, including a few notable and eccentric billionaires.” (https://www.thegits.com) Over their four-year tenure in Seattle\, The Gits’ unwavering dedication to their music deepened\, and their electrifying live performances garnered a fiercely loyal fan base across the United States and Europe. \nWithin this remarkable exhibition\, you’ll find  images capturing Mia and her bandmates in the throes of their magnetic performances\, vividly portraying the essence of their energetic stage presence in Seattle. We owe our heartfelt gratitude to the Zapata family\, whose generous support allowed the gallery to borrow these cherished works that have been integral to their lives for many years.  We would also like to thank photographers Julianne Andersen and Charles Peterson for agreeing to provide the photos that are included in this show. \nIn my role as the curator of the exhibit\, this is more than a collection of images presented for a gallery visitor\, it is a labor of love considering Mia’s profound impact on my life. We first crossed paths as students at Antioch\, and our friendship endured for many years. This exhibition serves as a poignant celebration of Mia’s rich creative legacy\, a legacy tragically cut short by her untimely passing in 1993. \nmichael casselli-Creative Director of the Herndon Gallery \n

SUMMARY:Herdon Speaks 1-13-23
DESCRIPTION:For its inaugural event Herndon Gallery/Herndon Speaks presents:Community Conversations:Listening to Artists Impacted by the Justice System \nOhio Prison Arts Connection (OPAC) will partner with four arts spaces in four cities around the state to exhibit its second commissioned poster series. The posters are created by justice-impacted artists and will be available for sale\, with all proceeds being returned to the artist. At each exhibition site\, OPAC will also host and convene a celebration and community conversation with the intention of building relationships and conversations about how the arts and culture sector can extend their resources to support people impacted by the criminal legal system and by incarceration. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This project supports our mission to use our diverse network of stakeholders around the state to gather resources\, storytelling spaces\, and collaborations at the intersection of the arts and the justice system to benefit Ohioans and artists. Our primary intended outcomes are to provide an expanded audience for the work of six talented artists\, and to elevate the conversation in Ohio about how\, on a practical level\, arts and culture institutions\, initiatives\, and leaders can mobilize their existing assets in the direction of people impacted by the justice system. \nNicole Fleetwood\, in her groundbreaking book Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration\, argues that in order to more fully and deeply understand the American arts landscape\, we must understand the contributions to form\, content\, and theme that are a part of art made by people who are or were incarcerated. She asserts in her introduction that “the compulsion to make\, to create\, and to produce meaning under brutal and austere circumstances\, offers lessons “developed by the punished and imprisoned about how to create\, forge relations\, and to embody and represent one’s life under unimaginable conditions.” \nPanelists: Mary Evans\, Dayton\, ’20 Antioch College gradTyra Patterson\, CincinnatiGwen Garth\, ClevelandMichael Powell\, MansfieldDeAndre Gaston\, ToledoDr. Jessie Glover\, moderator \nVenue:Herndon Gallery\, Antioch College\, Yellow Springs\, OhioDate: Friday\, January 13\, 2023 \nSchedule: 3:00-3:30: Exhibit opens\, meet and greet (artists and panelists are present)3:45-5:00: Panel Presents\, moderator Dr. Jessie Glover (Streamed)5:15-5:35: Performances by Tronee Threat & Latisha LaShay (10 minutes each) (Streamed)5:45-6:20: Reception with food\, drink\, and conversation6:25-6:30: Closing remarks\, thank you (s)\, good bye (s)

When Claude Got Shot chronicles five years in Claude’s physical and mental recovery journey. Persisting through multiple surgeries\, catastrophic health care bills\, and the lingering emotional aftermath of that traumatic night\, Claude finds himself torn between punishment for Nathan and the injustice of mass incarceration for Black men and boys. \nFor Claude\, the path to recovery ultimately leads to forgiveness. But that path proves to be a fraught one\, paved with all the complexities that race\, violence\, justice\, and healthcare can possibly present.

SUMMARY:HERNDON EXHIBITIONS/Black History: A Work In Progress
DESCRIPTION:Herndon Gallery invites you to witness\nBlack History: A Work in Progress\nAn exploration and exhibition highlighting Black History and its constant influence on our lives. \nFebruary 18 – March 28\, 2022\nGallery Hours Tuesday through Saturday 1 pm – 4 pm \nThe frame\, for lack of a better word\, is in recognizing and celebrating black history and black folk’s contributions across different aspects of the culture\, and how those contributions have come from this area specifically. Contributions from the Antioch community\, contributions by organizations that are part of the community of Yellow Springs\, contributions from scholars\, visual artists\, performance artists\, musicians\, students from the college to students from the schools in town. \nThe common connection is in the intersectional nature of our relationships to each other in this part of Ohio\, and the recognition that the eclectic mix of materials in the exhibition further demonstrate that black history is our history\, it appears everywhere\, and that by celebrating its importance transcends the idea that one month a year provides adequate representation. This practice only makes it easy for people to compartmentalize the work that is ongoing 24 hours of the day\, 365 days of the year.  \nThis multi-media exhibit features artwork and material contributions from: \nCecil Taylor\nBen Shahn\nGabrielle Civil\nTruth Garrett\nJewel Graham\nThe People’s Banner Workshop\nJohn Sims\nSumayah Chapelle\nMatt Shelton\nSarah Dickens\nChuck Smart\nBing Davis\nKarsten Creightney\nRosamond S.
