DESCRIPTION:Defining American in the Heartland: A Conversation Between Jose Antonio Vargas and William Lopez\n \nJose Antonio Vargas is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist\, Emmy-nominated filmmaker\, and Tony-nominated theatrical producer. \nA leading voice for the human rights of immigrants\, he founded the non-profit immigrant storytelling organization Define American\, twice named one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company\, and explores all facets of immigration as host of its YouTube show and podcast Define American with Jose Antonio Vargas. He is also a co-founder of 1587 Sneakers\, the world’s first Asian American sneaker brand. \nHis best-selling memoir\, Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen\, was published by HarperCollins in 2018. An updated edition with new material for living in Trump’s America was released in June 2025. His second book\, due out next year\, will examine how diverse immigrant populations are upending America’s foundational Black and White racial binary. He also has a third book in the works about global migration.Bill Lopez and Jose Antonio Vargas\n \nWilliam Lopez is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and Faculty Associate in the Latina/o Studies Program. He is the author of Raiding the Heartland: An American Story of Deportation and Resistance\, a follow-up to his award-winning first book\, Separated: Family and Community in the Aftermath of an Immigration Raid. DESCRIPTION:Antiochiana Archivist Scott Sanders knows more about Antioch College than anyone else in the world. Scott has been at Antioch since 1994 and has lovingly stewarded the College’s collection of books\, artifacts\, and historical records for over 30 years. Here’s your chance to hear him talk about the interesting and entertaining history of Antioch! \nThis monthly series of one hour presentations will be held both in-person at the Olive Kettering Library and virtually via Zoom. Presentations are free and open to the public. There will be time for Q&A after each presentation. These sessions will be recorded and posted on Antioch’s YouTube channel. \nPresentations are from 12:30 – 1:30 pm in the Olive Kettering Library. \nOr you can join virtually via Zoom. Presentations will be shared on Antioch’s Facebook channel afterwards. \n\nScheduleMarch 11: 150 Years of Antioch in 60 Minutes or Less: A general overview of Antioch College history from the 1850s to the 2000s. \nApril 8: Fact and Fiction of Antioch College: An attempt to dispel three seemingly impossible-to-dispel myths about the College. \nMay 13: Red\, Russians\, and Spies: Two former professors who used Antioch as a haven from dangerous Russian and Communist spies; one for real\, and the other maybe in his head. \nJune 10: Why So Many Damn Colleges in Ohio: An attempt to explain the reason for the establishment of over eighty small colleges in the great state of Ohio. \nJuly 8: Antioch and The Civil War: A history of Antioch College during the central event in American history\, the US Civil War\, including exploits and experiences of Antiochians who served in the conflict. \nAugust 12: The Devil and Daniel Ellsberg or How Scott Got Fired: A brief history of Antiochiana and a harrowing personal account of Scott’s experiences with Antioch University. \nSeptember 9: The Life of Hugh Taylor Birch: The improbable rags to riches story of a dropout from the 1860s who gave Antioch College a glen (and so much more) and has a dormitory named in his honor. \nOctober 14: Women of the Glen: The lives of three women associated with the College’s former nature preserve: a scientist\, an art collector\, and a sculptor. \nNovember 11: My Hero Horace Mann: A biographical picture show about Antioch College’s first president.
