SUMMARY:The Pop Wagner Greene County Trio In Concert
DESCRIPTION:THE POP WAGNER GREENE COUNTY TRIO IN CONCERT THURSDAY\, JULY 7\nThree Yellow Springers join forces for a fun-packed event at Foundry Theater. Tickets on sale June 1. \nDubbed The Pop Wagner Greene County Trio\, three musicians with Yellow Springs ties will be in concert on Thursday\, July 7\, at the Foundry Theater at Antioch College. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Pop Wagner —a Yellow Springs native who moved to the Twin Cities decades ago —is a singer\, songwriter\, storyteller\, guitar picker\, fiddler\, lariat-trick artist\, and downright funny guy. His performances of cowboy songs\, old-time fiddle tunes\, country blues\, and more have won over audiences across 44 states and 14countries. This Ohio trip marks a sort of homecoming: he will also be attending his 55th Yellow Springs High School class reunion. \nJoining Pop is another YSHS graduate\, Gregory “Duke” Dewey\, on washboard. You may have heard Dewey on drums with any number of bands\, including Country Joe and the Fish in a soggy set at Woodstock 1969. And rounding out the trio\, is bassist Ben Cooper\, a Greene County resident who performed with Rhythm inShoes and is a member of the Ohio Corndaddies string band. \nIn addition to the Foundry Theater show\, concertgoers can choose to add a VIP reception (complete with refreshments and Pop’s lariat tricks and humor) to the music- and fun-packed evening. \nThe events are sponsored by public radio station WYSO-FM and Yellow Springs Home\, Inc. (developers of permanently affordable and sustainable housing). \nWHAT:In concert: THE POP WAGNER GREENE COUNTY TRIOPop Wagner (guitar\, harmonica\, vocals)Gregory “Duke” Dewey (washboard)Ben Cooper (bass) \nWHERE:Foundry Theater at Antioch College920 Corry StreetYellow Springs\, OH 45387 \nWHEN: Thursday\, July 7\, 2022Concert:7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 PM) \nALSO:A pre-concert VIP Reception from 5 to 6 p.m.\, featuring refreshments plus Pop Wagner’s lariat tricks and humor.Reception is $40 and includes the concert ticketTICKETS:PRE-SALE tickets are no longer available.Limited remaining seats are available for the show and tickets can be purchased at the door.$15 tickets available at the door \nINFORMATION:Pop Wagner(612) 817-5898popwagner@aol.compopwagner.com \nEVENT SPONSORS:WYSO-FMYellow Springs Home\, Inc.

SUMMARY:Founders' Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:Intro\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Video\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Support\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Antioch College Founders’ Day\nIn October of 1850 the Christian Church\, a small\, largely rural Protestant sect of Millerite persuasion\, met in Marion\, NY (about 50 miles west of Syracuse) for its annual General Convention. The biggest item on the agenda was “the college project”. \nExactly three years later\, almost to the hour in fact\, Horace Mann was installed as the first president of Antioch College before an assembled throng of over 3\,000 – twice the population of Yellow Springs at the time. \nFounders’ Day 2022\nThis event is free and open to the public. Please come and join us as we celebrate Antioch College’s birthday – yes\, there will be cake! \nJoin us on The Horseshoe Lawn in front of Antioch Hall at 4:00 pm to hear from our speakers and guests. After this short program we will celebrate in the South Gym of The Wellness Center at Antioch College with refreshments and community. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Featuring:\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The State of the College AddressPresident\, Jane Fernandes \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Special Guests:\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Mayor of Yellow Springs\,Pam Conine \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Yellow Springs Village Manager\,Josue Salmeron ’06 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Antioch College Archivist\,Scott Sanders \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Live Stream:\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Support Antioch College:

SUMMARY:Mathematics of Voting
DESCRIPTION:On November 8th\, Ohioans will go to the polls to elect a governor\, congressional and state representatives\, and members of the state supreme court. But are these elections structured in the optimal way? \nTo find out more\, come to a talk on Wednesday\, October 26th from 6-7pm on Antioch College Campus on “The mathematics of voting: on how to count the votes so that your vote counts” by Dr. Emily Riehl\, a professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins University. The talk will take place in room 219 of the Arts and Sciences Building and will be broadcast live on Zoom. \nTo sign up to receive the Zoom link\, rsvp here:https://bit.ly/mathematicsvote \n When many candidates run for office but only one can be elected\, how should we pick the winner? The most common procedure\, selecting the person who receives the most votes\, can lead to elected officials that only a small minority of public supports. This talk will introduce other voting procedures that allow voters to express more nuanced preferences while touring some of the mathematical paradoxes inherent in elections. These considerations are equally relevant for the election of the next community manager\, mayor\, representative\, senator\, or president.

SUMMARY:Herdon Speaks 1-13-23
DESCRIPTION:For its inaugural event Herndon Gallery/Herndon Speaks presents:Community Conversations:Listening to Artists Impacted by the Justice System \nOhio Prison Arts Connection (OPAC) will partner with four arts spaces in four cities around the state to exhibit its second commissioned poster series. The posters are created by justice-impacted artists and will be available for sale\, with all proceeds being returned to the artist. At each exhibition site\, OPAC will also host and convene a celebration and community conversation with the intention of building relationships and conversations about how the arts and culture sector can extend their resources to support people impacted by the criminal legal system and by incarceration. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This project supports our mission to use our diverse network of stakeholders around the state to gather resources\, storytelling spaces\, and collaborations at the intersection of the arts and the justice system to benefit Ohioans and artists. Our primary intended outcomes are to provide an expanded audience for the work of six talented artists\, and to elevate the conversation in Ohio about how\, on a practical level\, arts and culture institutions\, initiatives\, and leaders can mobilize their existing assets in the direction of people impacted by the justice system. \nNicole Fleetwood\, in her groundbreaking book Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration\, argues that in order to more fully and deeply understand the American arts landscape\, we must understand the contributions to form\, content\, and theme that are a part of art made by people who are or were incarcerated. She asserts in her introduction that “the compulsion to make\, to create\, and to produce meaning under brutal and austere circumstances\, offers lessons “developed by the punished and imprisoned about how to create\, forge relations\, and to embody and represent one’s life under unimaginable conditions.” \nPanelists: Mary Evans\, Dayton\, ’20 Antioch College gradTyra Patterson\, CincinnatiGwen Garth\, ClevelandMichael Powell\, MansfieldDeAndre Gaston\, ToledoDr. Jessie Glover\, moderator \nVenue:Herndon Gallery\, Antioch College\, Yellow Springs\, OhioDate: Friday\, January 13\, 2023 \nSchedule: 3:00-3:30: Exhibit opens\, meet and greet (artists and panelists are present)3:45-5:00: Panel Presents\, moderator Dr. Jessie Glover (Streamed)5:15-5:35: Performances by Tronee Threat & Latisha LaShay (10 minutes each) (Streamed)5:45-6:20: Reception with food\, drink\, and conversation6:25-6:30: Closing remarks\, thank you (s)\, good bye (s)

Centered around the telling of family history and the role of generational sharing in understanding\, growth and self-worth\, Freedom Flight wrestles with the ongoing legacy of slavery and identity. When Evelyn\, a descendant of Addison White\, confronts her own difficulties with racism\, an array of characters tell and relive their family history\, illustrating the tension\, drama and the promise of deliverance from bigotry. Freedom Flight explores the unwritten roadmap between past and present\, and the relationship between the things that we leave behind and those that carry us forward.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in sociology\, and a Master’s in Social Work.  She is one of the founding members of the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (https://www.pisab.org) and has been for the last 40 years organizing as an antiracist community organizer. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina\, Barbara co-chaired the “Rebuilding New Orleans”  Commission and met with President George W. Bush and his team in an effort to protect local folks’ property from the impending efforts to displace them after that tragic storm. \nAbout the book \nIn Deconstructing Racism\, Barbara and Joe propose the deconstruction of racism’s roots within systems and institutions that have been created\, both structurally and legally\, to serve white people. The authors propose that the deconstruction of racism must take place through the reconstruction of these systems and institutions. \nThe authors seek to unmask the complexities of racism and the invisible patterns that keep it in place. There is no quick fix\, but they believe racism can be deconstructed and undone. In order to do this\, they identify and address race-based identity\, history\, and cultural issues rooted in current systems. \nThree chapters specifically address societal systems and provide anti-racism strategies for community organizers. Three chapters address racism as rooted in systems in the church and challenge people of faith to seek racial healing through understanding\, honest confession\, true reconciliation\, and reconstructed church institutions. A final chapter outlines a way forward to and through a new era of anti-racist reconstruction. This way forward includes a new anti-racist mission statement\, a new model of decision-making power\, and new processes for accountability.

SUMMARY:Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Kieran Kane’s seminal work in The O’Kanes and Kane Welch Kaplin\, as well as co-founding the independent label Dead Reckoning Records\, laid the foundation for the contemporary world of Americana music. A successful solo artist\, collaborator\, and songwriter (with songs recorded by Alan Jackson\, John Prine\, Emmylou Harris\, and many more)\, Kieran is a musician’s musician: his playing is always understated\, always groove-oriented\, and always serving the song. \nIf Rayna Gellert seems a preternaturally gifted songwriter\, it’s because she’s seen farther into the old songs than most. Growing up in a musical family\, she turned to Appalachian old-time music at a young age\, becoming a prodigious fiddler and leading a new revival of American stringband music through her work with the acclaimed roots band Uncle Earl. An in-demand collaborator\, she has toured and recorded with artists such as Scott Miller\, Abigail Washburn\, Toubab Krewe\, and Robyn Hitchcock. \nKieran and Rayna first met\, fittingly\, at San Francisco’s celebrated Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, which led to their cowriting songs for Kieran’s solo album Unguarded Moments (Dead Reckoning). They joined forces again for Rayna’s 2017 release\, Workin’s Too Hard (StorySound Records)\, which they also co-produced. Their first duo album\, The Ledges\, was released in February of 2018 on Dead Reckoning Records\, followed up quickly by 2019’s When the Sun Goes Down. \nMost recently this “unlikely musical couple” have released The Flowers That Bloom in Spring\, which finds the duo digging deeper into their exploration of minimalist writing and recording. \nFans of either artist will recognize the musical kindred-spiritedness in their restrained and roots-oriented approach to both songs and arrangements.

SUMMARY:Zoh Amba and Chris Corsano at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:“Amba’s music is a chaotic spiritual exploration\, a path to enlightenment strewn with skronking wails. “The music is God; God is the music\,” she recently told the New York Times — a philosophy that\, although old as time\, has made her one of the brightest new stars in avant-garde jazz.” \n— STEREOGUM (Top 40 Band’s of 2022) \nZoh Amba is a composer\, saxophonist\, and flutist from Tennessee. Her music blends avant-garde\, noise\, and devotional hymns. Before studying music at the San Francisco Conservatory Of Music\, New England Conservatory and studying with David Murray in New York\, she spent most of her time writing and practicing saxophone in the forest near her home. Today\, her powerfully unique avant-garde music is full of folk melodies\, mesmerizing refrains\, and repeated incantations. Amba released two records in 2022\, her debut record O\, Sun which was produced by John Zorn and released on the prestigious label Tzadik. Zoh Amba’s second record\, Bhakti features Micah Thomas\, Tyshawn Sorey\, and Matt Hollenberg. She has collaborated with a variety of high profile musicians such as Jim White (Dirty Three)\, legendary jazz bassist William Parker\, Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)\, etc. Amba has also performed at well respected venues and festivals Roulette (NY)\, Ars Nova Presents (Philadelphia)\, Vision Festival (NY)\, and Angel City Jazz Festival (LA) along with a 2023 Big Ears Festival’s performance. \nhttps://zohamba.com \n \n

SUMMARY:Mark Lomax Trio at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:“…trio picks up the pieces from the 1960s collision of black power and avant-jazz while dispensing with everything superfluous.”- Village Voice \nLomax is the rare drummer who leaves you wanting more\, leading his bandmates through a strikingly terse\, brilliantly counterintuitive and ultimately joyous series of explorations. \nDr. Mark Lomax\, II\, is a critically acclaimed composer\, recording artist\, drummer\, activist\, and educator. In one of the timeliest and unprecedented pieces of work of our history\, Lomax released 400: An Afrikan Epic in January 2019. This magnum opus consists of a 12 album cycle\, a curriculum\, and a documentary that ambitiously tells the story of the Afrikan diaspora. Divided into thirds\, the Epic explores thousands of years of the history that is pre-colonial Afrika\, the Ma’afa (400 years between 1619 and 2019)\, and Afro-futurism expressing a vision of what Blacks in America will heal toward in the next 400 years.A highly sought-after lecturer\, Lomax specializes in the socio-political\, and spiritual aspects of African-American art music\, race\, and using the arts to build community. \nLomax has toured with the Delfeayo Marsalis Sextet and worked with notable artists such as Clark Terry\, Marlon Jordan\, Azar Lawrence\, Bennie Maupin\, Billy Harper\, Nicholas Payton\, Ellis Marsalis\, and Wessel Anderson\, among others. He has also been a resident artist with the Cincinnati Symphony (2019)\, Denison University (2017)\, and has presented the 400 across the country at various colleges\, universities\, art and community organizations. \nDr. Lomax’s myriad experiences have allowed him to create a unique blend of styles in his music. Whether he’s interpreting the Negro Spiritual through jazz\, arranging gospel music for a symphony orchestra\, or performing his original works\, his music is relevant\, probing\, and inspiring.
