SUMMARY:Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Kieran Kane’s seminal work in The O’Kanes and Kane Welch Kaplin\, as well as co-founding the independent label Dead Reckoning Records\, laid the foundation for the contemporary world of Americana music. A successful solo artist\, collaborator\, and songwriter (with songs recorded by Alan Jackson\, John Prine\, Emmylou Harris\, and many more)\, Kieran is a musician’s musician: his playing is always understated\, always groove-oriented\, and always serving the song. \nIf Rayna Gellert seems a preternaturally gifted songwriter\, it’s because she’s seen farther into the old songs than most. Growing up in a musical family\, she turned to Appalachian old-time music at a young age\, becoming a prodigious fiddler and leading a new revival of American stringband music through her work with the acclaimed roots band Uncle Earl. An in-demand collaborator\, she has toured and recorded with artists such as Scott Miller\, Abigail Washburn\, Toubab Krewe\, and Robyn Hitchcock. \nKieran and Rayna first met\, fittingly\, at San Francisco’s celebrated Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, which led to their cowriting songs for Kieran’s solo album Unguarded Moments (Dead Reckoning). They joined forces again for Rayna’s 2017 release\, Workin’s Too Hard (StorySound Records)\, which they also co-produced. Their first duo album\, The Ledges\, was released in February of 2018 on Dead Reckoning Records\, followed up quickly by 2019’s When the Sun Goes Down. \nMost recently this “unlikely musical couple” have released The Flowers That Bloom in Spring\, which finds the duo digging deeper into their exploration of minimalist writing and recording. \nFans of either artist will recognize the musical kindred-spiritedness in their restrained and roots-oriented approach to both songs and arrangements.

SUMMARY:Zoh Amba and Chris Corsano at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:“Amba’s music is a chaotic spiritual exploration\, a path to enlightenment strewn with skronking wails. “The music is God; God is the music\,” she recently told the New York Times — a philosophy that\, although old as time\, has made her one of the brightest new stars in avant-garde jazz.” \n— STEREOGUM (Top 40 Band’s of 2022) \nZoh Amba is a composer\, saxophonist\, and flutist from Tennessee. Her music blends avant-garde\, noise\, and devotional hymns. Before studying music at the San Francisco Conservatory Of Music\, New England Conservatory and studying with David Murray in New York\, she spent most of her time writing and practicing saxophone in the forest near her home. Today\, her powerfully unique avant-garde music is full of folk melodies\, mesmerizing refrains\, and repeated incantations. Amba released two records in 2022\, her debut record O\, Sun which was produced by John Zorn and released on the prestigious label Tzadik. Zoh Amba’s second record\, Bhakti features Micah Thomas\, Tyshawn Sorey\, and Matt Hollenberg. She has collaborated with a variety of high profile musicians such as Jim White (Dirty Three)\, legendary jazz bassist William Parker\, Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)\, etc. Amba has also performed at well respected venues and festivals Roulette (NY)\, Ars Nova Presents (Philadelphia)\, Vision Festival (NY)\, and Angel City Jazz Festival (LA) along with a 2023 Big Ears Festival’s performance. \nhttps://zohamba.com \n \n

SUMMARY:Mark Lomax Trio at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:“…trio picks up the pieces from the 1960s collision of black power and avant-jazz while dispensing with everything superfluous.”- Village Voice \nLomax is the rare drummer who leaves you wanting more\, leading his bandmates through a strikingly terse\, brilliantly counterintuitive and ultimately joyous series of explorations. \nDr. Mark Lomax\, II\, is a critically acclaimed composer\, recording artist\, drummer\, activist\, and educator. In one of the timeliest and unprecedented pieces of work of our history\, Lomax released 400: An Afrikan Epic in January 2019. This magnum opus consists of a 12 album cycle\, a curriculum\, and a documentary that ambitiously tells the story of the Afrikan diaspora. Divided into thirds\, the Epic explores thousands of years of the history that is pre-colonial Afrika\, the Ma’afa (400 years between 1619 and 2019)\, and Afro-futurism expressing a vision of what Blacks in America will heal toward in the next 400 years.A highly sought-after lecturer\, Lomax specializes in the socio-political\, and spiritual aspects of African-American art music\, race\, and using the arts to build community. \nLomax has toured with the Delfeayo Marsalis Sextet and worked with notable artists such as Clark Terry\, Marlon Jordan\, Azar Lawrence\, Bennie Maupin\, Billy Harper\, Nicholas Payton\, Ellis Marsalis\, and Wessel Anderson\, among others. He has also been a resident artist with the Cincinnati Symphony (2019)\, Denison University (2017)\, and has presented the 400 across the country at various colleges\, universities\, art and community organizations. \nDr. Lomax’s myriad experiences have allowed him to create a unique blend of styles in his music. Whether he’s interpreting the Negro Spiritual through jazz\, arranging gospel music for a symphony orchestra\, or performing his original works\, his music is relevant\, probing\, and inspiring.

SUMMARY:Keep Marching and Tronee Threat with Everybody Eats at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Emerging from Yellow Springs\, Everybody Eats delivers a unique\, soul-stirring sound that creates a masterful blend of hip hop and jazz influences. \nAnother chance to see Mad River Theater Works in action – This time with a special set of music with Tronee Threat and Everybody Eats. FREE of charge thanks to support from the YS Community Foundation. There is no pre-registration for this event.  Please join us and find a seat.  The doors will open @ 6:30PM. \nKeep Marching: The Road to the March on Washington is a new play with music by Mad River Theater Works. Bringing collected oral history to life through the device of a modern podcast of fictional descendants of actual attendees\, the one-act play explores the historic 1963 March on Washington. The March\, revered as the day that Martin Luther King Jr. made his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech in August of 1963\, drew over a quarter of a million people together in a peaceful gathering\, and was a shining moment in the progression of equality in America\, as well as a pivotal action in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. \nAt the heart of the play are two questions: 1. Not knowing that Dr. King was going to deliver one of the most iconic speeches in modern history\, why did so many people go? and 2. And seeing that 1963 was one of the most violent years of the civil rights movement\, what inspired young people in their teens or twenties to go? \nKeep Marching is built upon two threads of storytelling. One is the historical record of the plans\, motivations\, fears and concerns that went into individuals making the decision to attend the March. This material stems from collected oral histories\, gathered by playwright Daniel Carlton\, of actual people who attended the March. The second thread of the play’s storytelling has to do with how the past inspires the present. Weaving these ideas together are the play’s fictional characters (news reporters covering the 1963 March and modern-day teenagers creating a podcast) and actual attendees who relate to each other in the world of the play through their memories and reflections. \nThe unique approach to storytelling that also blends new songs and traditional Civil Rights anthems makes Keep Marching a play for audiences of all ages to come face to face with the historic power of collective care and hope that was emblematic of the 1963 March on Washington.

SUMMARY:Feufollet at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:The young and vibrant Southwest Louisiana band takes Cajun\, honky-tonk\, and string-band music as their starting point\, and keeps an open mind about where their song craft will lead them. On Two Universes\, their first studio album in over five years\, Feufollet proves their Cajun roots don’t define them as much as propel them forward; whispers of the swamp and its time-honored waltzes trigger a modern and broad musical imagination\, one that finds equal expression in blues\, old-time\, country ballads\, rock’n’roll\, whatever\, all for the sake of the song. \nCajun\, country\, and rock’n’roll all began as homespun enterprises\, by musicians tinkering with inherited melodies until new sounds were struck. Feufollet keeps that experimental spirit alive and well with their diverse musical palette\, edgy arrangements\, and pop-song sensibilities. The band accomplishes the unusual feat of creating a sound that is at once familiar and fresh\, classic and yet unmistakably original.  \nhttps://feufollet.net

SUMMARY:Jonathan Richman at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:The Foundry Theater and Stuart’s Opera House present:\nLIVE! ON STAGE: JONATHAN RICHMAN featuring TOMMY LARKINS on the drums! \n“Richman is one of America’s most unique and dynamic songwriters…” – Nashville Scene \nThe Foundry is proud to partner with our friends at Stuart’s Opera House to bring this show to Yellow Springs. Born in Boston and raised in Natick\, Massachusetts\, inimitable singer\, songwriter and guitarist Jonathan Richman founded the Modern Lovers\, a hugely influential proto-punk band\, in 1970 at age 19. The original group included keyboardist Jerry Harrison (who later joined Talking Heads) and drummer David Robinson (who later joined the Cars) and the band recorded nine studio and four live albums\, developing a die-hard cult following while receiving widespread critical acclaim. The group’s 1976 debut album\, The Modern Lovers\, is widely regarded as a rock-and-roll classic\, recognized across the globe as a positively ground-breaking\, seminal release. \nSince the late 1980s\, when the second incarnation of the Modern Lovers disbanded\, Richman has released 18 solo albums\, each featuring his unmatched blend of laid-back songs with minimal instrumentation\, both acoustic and electric (although these days he plays only acoustic). He is renowned for his wholly unpretentious approach to his art\, the consistent optimism and evocative romanticism of his lyrics\, his endearingly childlike perspective and delivery style\, and for songs that are firmly rooted in rock and roll yet deeply influenced by music from around the world. Richman’s playing and songwriting style has been described as “whimsical” and “innocent\,” and in a 2015 interview he was quoted as saying\, “I don’t write\, really. I just make up songs.” \n“The music we’re doing now works well in quiet places like theaters and performing art centers. We still don’t use a program or a set list so we don’t know what we’ll do until we do it. Please do not expect old songs. Many singers my age do a retrospective; this show is not like that. It’s mostly stuff made up in the last 3 and 4 years. Some of the songs presented might be in different languages; this is not to be esoteric or clever\, it’s because the different languages help me express different feelings sometimes. One last thing\, my idea of a good show has nothing to do with applause. It’s about if all the songs I sang that night were ones that I felt.” – Jonathan

SUMMARY:Theater Oobleck: "The Hunchback Variations" at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Theater Oobleck has been a stalwart of Chicago’s fringe theater community\, presenting original works without a director\, for over 35 years. The Foundry Theater is honored to present this play that has been one of the most successful productions in Theater Oobleck’s history\, presented to critical acclaim in Chicago\, Houston\, Austin\, St. Louis\, Washington D.C.\, Hamburg\, Germany\, and the Edmonton Fringe. \nThe Hunchback Variationsby Mickle Maherpresented by Theater Oobleckwith Colm O’Reilly and Diana Slickman50 minutes\, no intermission \nChicago’s Theater Oobleck presents The Hunchback Variations. Playing out over 11 scenes\, or “variations\,” the story takes the form of a panel discussion between Quasimodo\, hunchback of Notre Dame\, and Ludwig van Beethoven\, composer\, concerning their attempt to create a mysterious sound effect called for in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. A deft and hilarious deconstruction of the creative process\, and a fearless investigation of artistic collaboration\, Hunchback is driven by questions about the nature of music and sound and performance\, and the many ways that things can go wrong. \n“Cerebral\, comic\, and just plain weird\,” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch\, 2002)\, The Hunchback Variations (2001) has been one of the most successful productions in Theater Oobleck’s 35-year history\, presented to critical acclaim in Chicago\, Houston\, Austin\, St. Louis\, Washington D.C.\, Hamburg\, Germany\, and the Edmonton Fringe. \nhttp://theateroobleck.com/home

SUMMARY:The Faux Paws at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:“…a compelling blend of traditional music virtuosity and driving dancehall rhythms alongside progressive instrumentation and improvisation” – Kara Kundert\, Bluegrass Pride \nFrom raging fiddle tunes\, to saxophone solos and unrequited love songs\, the music of The Faux Paws would be hard to pin down with standard genre descriptions. The trio’s contagious groove\, and feel-good melting pot folk music has been honed over ten years of playing together\, and is the sound of three close friends (two of which happen to be brothers)\, who feel a musical kinship that transcends any stylistic limitations. Now\, after nearly a decade of music making\, the bi-coastal trio are releasing their self-titled debut album “The Faux Paws” \nBrothers Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand grew up playing contra dance music with their musician mother in the band Great Bear. Chris Miller grew up in Florida\, and he was enamoured with bluegrass\, and studied jazz before going on to play with GRAMMY nominated Cajun-country band The Revelers. Since meeting in 2012\, the trio have toured across North America several times\, sometimes under the name The Faux Paws\, sometimes as part of other larger ensembles. But due to their commitments to other bands and musical projects\, the timing was never right to focus on making The Faux Paws a priority. Instead\, they took their time learning about different styles of music from one another\, and finding where their interests and skills could create unexpected and exciting new sounds. “I love super glossy pop music\, and Chris is always pushing more of a jazz influence” says Noah.. “But we all have a strong background in dance music\, so almost everything we do has rhythm and groove\, and is based around hook and feel”. \nIt may have taken The Faux Paws ten years to make their debut album\, but those years have clearly not gone to waste. Now\, with an experimental but cohesive vision\, the trio brings together seemingly unrelated musical elements into one joyful and distinctive collection\, deeply rooted in the raw humanity of folk dance and music traditions. \n“There’s so much that’s straightforwardly eccentric about The Faux Paws on paper that the contrast between sounds and sensibilities relaxes into a logical whole. The three have carved out a unique character in a genre where distinguishing oneself is a surprisingly difficult task. Considerable musical talent…they’re undoubtedly good. Whatever first impression the trio makes on paper\, they make a better one with this record.” – Andy Crump\, No Depression

SUMMARY:World House Choir - "Weather: Stand the Storm" at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Regional premiere performance of with composer Rollo Dilworth in attendance\n \nFree\n \nWeather: Stand the Stormmusic by Rollo Dilworthpoetry by Claudia Rankine\n\n\nFrom the Composer: \n\n\nMay 25th of 2020 was a Memorial Day that took on new meaning for not just for those who were citizens of the United States of America\, but also for citizens around the world who witnessed the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. The institutional marginalization of Black people in the US has been a part of the nation’s history since the first enslaved Africans arrived on its shores in 1619. While Black\, Brown\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) have experienced some levels of educational\, economic\, and social advancement in this country\, George Floyd’s murder was “wake up” call to many—confirming that much work still needs to be done if America is to live up to its creed that proclaims\, “all are created equal\,” and its promise of “liberty and justice for all.” \n\n\nThe death of George Floyd soon became a defining moment in the discourse on systemic racism and social injustice. Even in the midst of a global pandemic\, people from all walks of life have sought both personal and public ways to respond to this traumatic and tragic event. Individuals and institutions around the world have been inspired to take a closer look at themselves\, to seek a deeper understanding of the dynamics of racism and bias and their effect on the present\, and to take purposeful actions that promote a more just society. \n\n\nHistorically\, the arts have always fulfilled the dual roles of responding to change while at the same time creating change. Weather is a poem that gives voice to the voiceless\, especially those who have been and continue to be marginalized because of difference. It responds to and reflects realities that are both culturally specific and humanly universal. Professor Claudia Rankine challenges all of us (no matter your background or lived experience) to know better\, to do better\, to take action\, and to become agents of social justice and social change. \n\n\nEveryone has a role to play in building and sustaining communities that are fair and just for all. Therefore\, Weather is a learning opportunity for all of us. All persons are invited to tell this story and learn from it. However\, the words and music are not to be taken lightly. Before and during the musical preparation process\, it is important that the singers\, instrumentalists\, and the conductor-teachers immerse themselves in learning experiences (readings\, videos\, projects\, conversations\, etc.) that deepen their understanding about bias\, racism\, classism\, sexism\, and other forms of marginalization. Just as an actor “does their homework” to gain greater understanding of the role before them\, so too must be the case for those performing Weather. As artists\, we must commit ourselves to doing this work. Otherwise\, the resulting performance will lack credibility and artistic integrity. All tempo and expression markings should be closely followed\, and the text must be articulated with the utmost clarity and respect. \n\n\nWhen I was presented the opportunity to set Professor Claudia Rankine’s poem Weather to music\, I immediately found resonance with the words. “Weather” is a contranym (a word with contradictory meanings). It could mean “to withstand\,” and it can also mean “to wear away.” After spending many hours studying the poem\, I had to think very carefully about how I could employ tonal\, rhythmic\, stylistic\, and expressive elements that would amplify (and not detract from) such a powerful and multi-dimensional sequencing of words. I sincerely hope the resulting composition\, bearing same title as the poem\, will serve as a meaningful\, musical manifestation of Rankine’s important and timely message to the world. \n\n\n–Rollo Dilworth \n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Larry & Joe at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Larry & Joe were destined to make music together. \nLarry Bellorín hails from Monagas\, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe\, after a decade in South America\, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry worked construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus\, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. Then Larry met Joe. \nCurrently based in the Triangle of North Carolina\, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, maracas\, guitar\, upright bass\, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce. \n“You wouldn’t think they would mesh well\, but this particular harp\, and this particular banjo — the Venezuelan harp and the Appalachian bluegrass banjo — seem to have been meant for each other. And it was just a fortunate coincidence.” NPR \nhttps://www.larryandjoe.com

SUMMARY:Marisa Anderson and Jim White at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Jim White and Marisa Anderson share an abounding appetite for musical exploration. White\, as a member of Venom P Stinger\, Dirty Three\, and Xylouris White\, is well known for his creative and idiosyncratic drumming. His singular abilities have also led to collaborations with Cat Power\, PJ Harvey\, and Bill Callahan among others. Anderson’s prolific output as a solo performer\, her mastery of traditional folk and blues forms and her abilities to make them entirely her own has established her as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking guitarists of the last decade. White and Anderson’s considerable technical skills are used in the most inventive and unconventional manner on their debut duo recording\, The Quickening (Thrill Jockey). \nWhite and Anderson are both instrumentalists whose voices are unmistakable and spellbindingly lyrical. Anderson unravels guitar traditions from across the globe into atmospheres all their own through improvisations and melodic lines while White implements an array of sticks\, brushes\, and techniques that imbue each rhythmic passage with its own distinct personality. \nThe idea of a collaboration developed while on the road together in 2015\, Anderson playing solo and White playing with Xylouris White. Their first recording session began at the Portland studio Type Foundry in late 2018\, where the duo initially agreed to meet and improvise and record. The duo later headed to Mexico City and into Estudios Noviembres\, a time capsule of a studio from the 70’s that had been largely closed before some young engineers took it over. The duo did not rehearse or perform together prior to the recording sessions; as White puts it\, “it’s good to suspend disbelief at this stage of playing.”

SUMMARY:Kristin Andreassen & Chris Eldridge at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Kristin Andreassen & Chris Eldridge \nKristin and Critter met back when their bands Uncle Earl and Punch Brothers were just getting started. Over the years\, they’ve played music with some of most luminous artists of our time (Paul Simon\, John Paul Jones\, Emmylou Harris) and they’ve won awards (John Lennon Song Contest Grand Prize\, a Grammy\, Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year). New parenthood has gifted this couple with more time at home\, where they’ve taken to playing Kristin’s songs — both old and new — all chosen by Critter to be reimagined for two guitars\, two voices\, and a more finely tuned sense of “the things that matter.”

DESCRIPTION:“She Grows Wings” is an original aerial theater show created by GravityWorks Circus showcasing their first ensemble. \n \n“She Grows Wings” is a story about a young daydreamer who escapes the reality of her parents’ constant fighting through her imagination. Through her dreams we find her floating in space\, playing with forest creatures\, and venturing a little too far when she meets the mermaids who whisk her deeper into a fairytale land. How long is our young daydreamer able to avoid reality?
