DESCRIPTION:Some people start life with a plan. Not Steve. He opens himself up to the universe in a way most of us will never be loose enough to achieve\, and the universe responds with a wink\, a seemingly bottomless well of inspiration\, and the talent to truly connect with an audience. While 2021 could have found him adrift\, faced with a tour moratorium the likes of which he hadn’t experienced in decades\, it opened a door — literally\, his friend Oliver Wood of The Wood Brother’s door  — to creating an exuberant\, thoughtful batch of songs that celebrate life in all of its stages.  \nThe resulting album is called Stardust & Satellites [Red House / Compass Records].  \n“I just make stuff up\,” he exclaims\, quipping\, “it sounded good to say that.” Steve is the sort of prolific writer and collaborator who downplays what seems like a non-stop geyser of creativity. “I have no rhyme or reason for what I do. DESCRIPTION:Mad River Theater Works presents WE WERE THERE: US Women in Vietnam \nWE WERE THERE showcases voices of women who served in Vietnam\, to honor them and commemorate 50 years since the war’s end. A mosaic of interviews recorded in the 1980s\, the stories invite the audience to hear about a turbulent time whose painful legacies continue. \nWe Were There is a community production directed\, developed\, and designed by Amy Bennett\, Jane Blakelock\, and Emily Schmidt\, with sound design and engineering by Skip Leeds. \nThe cast features Dinah Anderson\, Amy Bennett\, Jane Blakelock\, Mary Frost-Pierson\, Locksley Harper (Orr)\, Florence Lorenz\, Laura Lucas\, Desirée Nickell\, Margaret Silliman\, and Louise Smith\, with Karla Barstow as understudy.   \nThe production will be held in The Foundry’s Experimental Theater on November 1 @ 2 pm and November 2 @ 2 pm.  Donations will be accepted at the door.

DESCRIPTION:The World House Choir: Rebel With a Cause\, Sincerely Yours\, Pauli Murray \nFor Pauli Murray\, gender\, race and sexuality could not be separated. Her understanding of intersectionality and refusal to separate her identities fueled her legal work and activism. If\nintersectionality is understood as interconnected systems of discrimination or disadvantage\, Pauli Murray’s life defined the meaning of the word. \nFar ahead of her time\, Murray experienced her sexuality as a deeply complex and often painful struggle. She identified with feelings that didn’t fit conventional gender or sexual norms of her time. In the early twentieth century\, s/he viewed herself as a mix of genders “maybe two got fused into one with parts of each.” Privately\, s/he often identified as male “one of nature’s experiments; a girl who should have been a boy.” \nThe World House Choir is part of a national commission project to bring the story of Pauli to life. Titled\, Sincerely Yours\, Pauli Murray\, this 60-minute dramatic cantata in ten movements is scored for chorus\, two soloist/narrators\, piano\, and optional band. Musical styles of the ten movements follow the periods of Pauli’s life starting with music of the 1920s\, including references to Civil Rights songs and some of Pauli’s favorite Classical works\, up to music of the 1970s and ‘80s. \nPerformances:\nFriday\, November 7 at 7 in Yellow Springs (Foundry Theater)\nSaturday\, November 8 at 4 in Cincinnati (House of Joy)\nSunday\, November 9 at 2 in Yellow Springs (Foundry Theater)

DESCRIPTION:NO VISAS בלי רשות بدون جواز  A Hip-Hop Journey from Jaffa to Jerusalem to Yellow Springs \nSaturday\, Nov 22\, 7 PM \nFoundry Theater\, 920 Corry St. \nNO VISAS brings together five renowned hip-hop artists to perform both individually and collectively\, the culminating performance after a multi-month collaborative artistic process. The Foundry Theater welcomes\, for the first time\, Neta Weiner and Samira Saraya of Beit System Ali\, a cultural educational movement based in Holon\, whose activity is based on the belief in the power of artistic action to promote equality and generate socio-political change. After a year of preparation\, Neta and Samira’s in-person tour in Ohio was cancelled in August 2025 due to no visas being issued for them by the current administration. This project hence pivoted to a remote collaboration with three Ohio hip-hop artists based in Yellow Springs: Jayswifa\, Tronee Threat\, and ArtGod. Through countless remote meetings\, sharing inspiration and beats\, and discussing what it means to make art in times of political unrest and turmoil\, these five artists have pushed themselves to create music together that speaks to the realities of life in America\, Palestine\, and Israel. \nThis unique performance at the Foundry will highlight the individual artists’ works and voices\, but also share through narration and film segments the process of making music together. The show will end with a hybrid live-filmed performance of the two tracks created by all five artists. Samira and Neta will be joining the Q&A segment from Berlin. \nWhat began as the hip-hop ensemble System Ali during the 2006 housing rights movement against the eviction of 500 Palestinian families from the Ajami neighborhood of Jaffa (adjacent to Tel Aviv). Beit System Ali has grown over more than a decade into an exceptional cultural engine for community building. Alongside the ground-breaking artistic work of our collective of artists (all genders\, LGBTQI+\, Muslims\, Christians and Jews of diverse backgrounds)\, Beit System Ali develops and runs unique educational programs that encourage brave multicultural discourse\, cultivate in-depth encounters\, and enable shared society between different cultural groups. DESCRIPTION:Mr Sun Plays Ellington’s Nutcracker \nMr Sun records and performs a new interpretation of Ellington’s legendary Nutcracker Suite \nTchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite contains some of the most beloved and familiar melodies in the Western world.\nMr Sun has seized upon the inspiration of Duke Ellington’s brilliant\, sly\, & urbane re-interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Suite as an opportunity to salute and re-invent this wildly multi-faceted work anew through the lens of the American String Band\, a musical form which contains myriad styles and is presently engaged in a marathon upheaval of innovation and expansion. \nOn Mr Sun’s new recording\, the pieces of the Suite range from close interpretations of Billy Strayhorn’s original charts to intense extrapolations based on the spirit of the material. \nOn the recording\, Mr Sun generally played original improvised solos\, though some crucial musical statements by giants such as Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves were transcribed directly and played in their spirit.  Most of Strayhorn’s startling original horn voicings have been preserved in bowed strings\, with multi-mandolin parts adding a punchy edge.   \nThere is one new additional piece\, drawn directly from Tchaikovsky’s Ballet\, setting three themes in classic “Dawg Music” format. The Russian Dance is now hilariously full-on Bluegrass with banjo guest Alison Brown while still using the spy-movie intros\, outros\, and background lines of Strayhorn’s original. DESCRIPTION:Yellow Springs Kwanzaa 2025: A Celebration of African & African American Culture For EVERYONE! \nSaturday\, December 27th 6pmThe Foundry Theater at Antioch College\, 920 Corry St.\, Yellow Springs \nThe Kwanzaa program will include readings of the seven Kwanzaa principles (the Nguzo Saba) by young people\, presentation of the Nguzo Saba award to a Yellow Springs resident\, performances by local artists\, followed by a potluck meal. \nKwanzaa was developed by activist/educator Dr. Maulana Karenga in the 1960s to introduce and reinforce seven basic values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing family\, community\, and culture among African American people as well as Africans throughout the world African community. SUMMARY:Tarta Relena with Meara O’Reilly’s Hockets For Two Voices at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Tarta Relena \n“…the magic of this performance is in losing yourself in the harmonies and timeless poetic lyrics” NPR Tiny Desk Concerts \nThe project was born in 2016 by two singers who explore a cappella the sounds of the different styles in vocal music. Tarta Relena wants to build a repertoire that goes from traditional music to original songs that are related to the geographical area of ​​the Mediterranean. They do not fear to widen the limits of the sacred and the profane. Experimentation is the core of their identity\, and the blend of vocal techniques is their creative engine. In the arrangements\, the two very different timbres live together with the synthetic sounds and electronic samples. Always looking for complexity in simplicity and maximum expression with the minimum of elements. \nTarta Relena presents a new album that flirts with the notion of tragic thinking: diverse characters who find themselves facing unstoppable consequences\, known and unknown at the same time. A conceptual mix of what fate has ready for us\, our thirst for knowledge and the inability to integrate future versions of ourselves. They try to capture in music and lyrics the tension and mystery of what we do not understand\, coming from logics that escape our usual ways of existing. \nMarta Torrella\, voice and electronicsHelena Ros\, voice and electronics \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Meara O’Reilly’s Hockets For Two Voices — performed by Mingjia Chen & Linnea Sablosky \nMeara O’Reilly is a composer and artist\, focusing on perception and new musical interfaces. Her Hockets for Two Voices album was released on Cantaloupe in 2019. It was named in several year-end best of lists\, including Art Forum\, Bandcamp\, and Second Inversion. Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo reviewed the album for Talkhouse\, saying it “sends you\, moves you\, destroys you with beauty“.  \nHer music served as score for Daniel Soares’ short film “Bad for a Moment”\, which won Mention Spéciale at Cannes in 2024. She wrote\, performed\, and recorded vocal arrangements for several tracks on the 2020 Grammy nominated Fleet Foxes album\, Shore. Most recently\, she co-created a musical primate language for Isaiah Saxon’s upcoming A24 fantasy film “The Legend of Ochi”.  \nShe is co-creator of the Rhythm Necklace app\, a musical sequencer that uses two-dimensional geometry to create rhythm. In 2013 she completed a permanent exhibit at the Exploratorium\, titled Chladni Singing. Her collaboration with design firm Snibbe Interactive on sound-based ‘cymatic’ concert visuals for Björk’s Biophilia album was included in the world tour.  \nHer work has been presented at Carnegie Hall\, Bang on a Can\, National Sawdust\, Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Hall\, SF Davies Symphony Hall\, the Bauhaus Dessau\, and as part of Wild Up’s Endless Season. Selected past performances also include The Kitchen\, SFMOMA\, the Berkeley Art Museum\, Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in New York\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts\, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, opening for artists such as Beck\, Kronos Quartet\, Meredith Monk\, Laurie Anderson\, Lucky Dragons\, Dirty Projectors\, Deerhoof\, Michael Hurley\, Bill Callahan\, Matmos\, and Dinosaur Jr. She toured internationally as a solo musician and in the bands Feathers and Brightblack Morning Light. \nLinnea Sablosky is an LA-based musician with a passion for close harmony and intricate rhythms. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area\, they grew up studying Balkan singing and West African drumming. Linnea has toured internationally with world folk choir Northern Harmony\, and released records with vocal ensembles Stone Fruit Trio and Wheeler & Sablosky. Their current project is Kidi Band\, which released its sophomore record in March 2021. In addition to performing\, Linnea teaches ear training\, music theory\, and harmony singing courses through schoolofsong.org\, as well as private lessons and in-person group workshops. They hold a BFA in World Music Performance from California Institute of the Arts. \nmingjia sings\, composes\, improvises\, writes songs\, writes words\, curates shows & events\, draws\, is usually in los angeles or toronto\, was born in beijing\, makes original music (her debut LP ‘star\, star’ just came out on new amsterdam records!)\, leads the chamber ensemble tortoise orchestra\, is 1 half of the band uoou\, belts & yodels with roomful of teeth\, oo’s & ah’s with pleasure craft\, runs the secret-santa-style songwriter showcase series not my song\, is described as “one to watch” by i care if you listen & “beautiful\, mature and exceptionally coherent” by the whole note\, recently graduated from the university of southern california with a M.Mus in composition\, calls a lot\, cooks poorly\, owes everything to nina simone\, admits to forgetting\, needs to drink more water\, is having a great time\, thanks you for being here <3 \n			\n				Get Tickets\n			\n				Season Ticket Packages
