SUMMARY:Mdou Moctar at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Mdou Moctar – Special Solo Show\n \nSaturday\, May 16\n \n\nProdigious Tuareg guitarist and songwriter Mdou Moctar boldly reforges contemporary Saharan music and “rock music“ by melding Eddie Van Halen pyrotechnics\, full-blast noise and guitar shredding\, field recordings\, drums rhythms\, poetic meditations on love\, religion\, women’s rights\, inequality and Western Africa’s exploitation at the hands of colonial powers. \nMdou Moctar’s home is Agadez\, a desert village in rural Niger. Inspired by YouTube videos of Eddie Van Halen’s six string techniques and traditional Tuareg melodies\, he mastered the guitar which he himself built and created his own burning style.  A born charismatic\, Mdou went on to tell his story as an aspiring artist by writing\, producing & starring in the first Tuareg language film: a remake of Purple Rain called Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai –  which translates to “Rain The Color Of Blue With A Little Red In It”\, winning the approval of his family and his community. The word and the sound travelled across West Africa via mobile phone data cards\, a popular form of local music distribution. Grueling DIY world tours and albums on the independent US label Sahel Sounds followed\, including 2019’s landmark Ilana: The Creator album that earned Mdou Moctar an ecstatic international audience. \nThe Foundry is excited to present this special intimate and solo show with Mdou\, marking the close of our 2025-2026 Season. Originally scheduled for May 31\, 1869\, Antioch College was set to face the Cincinnati Red Stockings\, the first fully professional baseball team\, as part of their groundbreaking national tour. That game was rained out\, postponing what would have been a historic moment. \nIn 2019\, Antioch finally “made up” that matchup in a spirited contest played by vintage baseball rules\, before gloves and many modern conventions\, bringing the past vividly to life. DESCRIPTION:Mad River Theater Works will continue its Ohio Arts Council supported Yellow Springs Speaker Series on June 5th with journalist Jose Antonio Vargas and author Dr. William Lopez. \nIn this engaging conversation between two insightful minds working at the intersection of public health\, policy\, media and activism\, we will explore many aspects of the current state of immigration in America\, as well as the role of activists and authors in the process of understanding and shining light on the struggles our neighbors face.   \nJose Antonio Vargas is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist\, Emmy-nominated filmmaker\, and Tony-nominated theatrical producer. A leading voice for the human rights of immigrants\, he founded the non-profit immigrant storytelling organization Define American\, twice named one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company. His best-selling memoir\, Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen\, was published by Harper Collins in 2018. In 2026\, the Brooklyn Public Library named it one of the 250 most notable books in U.S. history. \nDr. William Lopez is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and Faculty Associate in the Latina/o Studies Program. He is the author of Raiding the Heartland: An American Story of Deportation and Resistance\, a follow-up to his award-winning first book\, Separated: Family and Community in the Aftermath of an Immigration Raid. In addition to his academic research on the public health impacts of deportation\, Dr. Lopez regularly contributes to the public discussions on deportation\, diversity\, and Latino culture in venues such as the Washington Post\, CNN\, San Antonio Express News\, Detroit Free Press\, and Truthout. \nGeneral admission tickets to the event are $15 for adults and $5 for youth/students. The film begins its journey inside a Texas prison\, after these women have spent nearly a decade behind bars. They were 19 and 20 years old at the time that allegations surfaced. \nUsing the women’s home video footage from 21 years ago combined with recent verité footage and interviews\, the film explores their personal narratives and their search for exculpatory evidence to help their losing criminal trials. 15 years into their journey\, director Deborah S. Esquenazi captures an on-camera recantation by one of the initial outcry victims\, now 25 years old although 7 at the time of the investigation. This brings the filmmaker into the role of investigator along with attorneys at the Innocence Project\, who are just beginning their quest for truth in this case. \nTogether with attorneys\, the film culminates with the women being released from prison to await their searing new exoneration hearings in San Antonio. Helming new legislation\, this is the first case in U.S. history that allows wrongfully convicted innocents to challenge convictions based on ‘Junk Science’\, or debunked forensics. As lesbian low income women of color\, these women hold intersecting identities that make them the most vulnerable to incarceration and juror bias. This under-reported injustice is actually widespread: Latina women represent one of the growing populations heading into prison. In addition\, most reported exonerations and wrongful convictions focus solely on men and cases involving women\, let alone lesbian women of color are largely under-reported. DESCRIPTION:Horse Lords\nAs an instrumental unit\, Horse Lords rely on a collective voice and focus to provide the band’s core strength; a process enriched by their disparate musical interests. The quartet\, formed in 2010\, embraces Renaissance counterpoint\, covers composer Julius Eastman\, plays instruments specially fretted for microtonality\, and organizes its music through polyrhythmic matrices. The ingenious machinery of their music is humanized with exploration and passion. \nGuitarist Owen Gardner and saxophonist / percussionist Andrew Bernstein met in the ‘00s at Goucher College in suburban Baltimore—the former steeped in global folk musics and experimental music\, the latter a budding composer. As members of the rich Baltimore music scene\, notably the band Teeth Mountain\, they met bassist Max Eilbacher\, who has subsequently blazed a path in electroacoustic music\, and drummer Sam Haberman. \nFrom the beginning\, Horse Lords have played music defined by repetition and complexity\, often at length\, and presented it in ways that telegraph their concern with questioning social and political norms. “Conceptually\, our music is always interested in the tension between the aesthetic\, the political\, and the material domains of art\, and the political muteness of instrumental music\,” the band says. “How can we imbue wordless music with a radical political message? DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n			\n				Season Ticket Packages\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				“The Gibson Brothers have built their legacy upon a sound that salutes the past while still pushing forward.”\nROLLING STONE\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				The Gibson Brothers \nThere’s a reason why Ricky Skaggs pulled Eric and Leigh Gibson off the stage at the Ryman two decades ago and offered to produce their debut record. The same thing that led David Ferguson and Grammy Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to co-write and produce their 14th album “Mockingbird” (2018) and release it on his own label Easy Eye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Williams Jr. and Dr. John: the Gibson Brothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing. And they can write a damn good country song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on almost every premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill and Rounder\, and\, if that’s not enough\, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends no less than Del McCoury. It’s a resume almost anybody in country music would be proud to have. But despite all of this\, the Gibson Brothers are not yet household names. Their latest album\, “Darkest Hour\,” produced by dobro master Jerry Douglas might just change that. \nAs soon as you hear Leigh singing with Alison Krauss [“I Feel The Same Way As You”] on the new project you realize that his voice is as good as anyone in music today. Add the brother harmony to that and they have something truly unique. While “Mockingbird” featured gorgeous production\, recreating the sound on stage was difficult. “We put together a little band to go out and try to recreate it\,” Eric told me\, but we couldn’t. We would have to have such a huge band to try to recreate that record\, but we did the best we could.” \nDouglas—who has won 14 Grammy awards and backed up everyone from Ray Charles to Paul Simon and George Jones—wanted to make a record they could actually play on the road. So he picked the best songs (out of dozens) and squirreled them away in Sound Emporium’s Studio B. But then the pandemic hit. “We did our last shows in March of 2020\,” Eric told me. “We were in Nashville the week everything was shutting down. It was surreal\, but Jerry was like\, ‘Guys\, the world’s going crazy. Let’s let this be our little cocoon.’ And we did. We cut all of the acoustic stuff and then went home and didn’t play any more gigs until things started opening. Then we went back and finished the record with Jerry in February of 2021.” \nThe result is arguably the strongest record The Gibson Brothers have ever made.The songs recorded in the first recording period featured Mike Barber (bass)\, Justin Moses (mandolin)\, Eamon McGloughlin (fiddle)\, and of course\, Jerry Douglas\, adding in John Gardner (drums)\, Guthrie Trapp (electric guitar)\, and Todd Parks (bass) for the final tracks\, “Darkest Hour” showcases just how easily Eric and Leigh move from what Dan Auerbach dubbed “country soul”(“I Go Driving”) to high octane bluegrass \n(“What a Difference A Day Makes” and “Dust”) with Douglas always keeping the spotlight on the songs themselves. “That’s what I love about those guys\,” Douglas told me\, “they are just great songwriters.” \nGrowing up on a dairy farm in northern New York and then traveling around the world in a bluegrass band has given them a unique vantage point on life\, and the songs on “Darkest Hour” are a testament to that. “Jerry wanted to hear everything we’d written\,” Eric told me\, “so we just sent him songs: brand new songs\, old songs\, there’s stuff on that record 20 years old that we never recorded. We wanted to see what he would do with us as singer-songwriters. We respect him that much. Some of my favorite records are Jerry Douglas produced records. He didn’t disappoint.” \nIf the Gibson Brothers had stayed in Nashville in 1999 they might possibly be Grand Ole Opry members by now. At the very least they would be hit songwriters on Music Row. But\, just like their buddy Del McCoury\, they chose family over success (McCoury was in his 50s when he moved to Nashville and didn’t really see major success until he was approaching 60).All they need is someone to shine a light on them. Their talent level is well-established\, the only producers they have ever worked with are Ricky Skaggs\, Dan Auerbach\, David Ferguson and Jerry Douglas. I dare say not many musicians can stack up a list of producers that strong. For the Gibson Brothers though\, they just want to keep writing\, singing\, and standing on a stage.\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Missy Raines and Allegheny \nAllegheny is Ben Garnett on guitar\, Eli Gilbert on banjo\, Ellie Hakanson on fiddle\, and Tristan Scroggins on mandolin. The band is named for the Allegheny highlands of West Virginia where Raines grew up. This band is a significant nod to her deep traditional bluegrass roots. The music is traditional and hard-driving at its core but energized with Raines’ well-known penchant for originality and innovation. \n“I grew up in West Virginia\, just a few miles from the historic C&O Canal\, the headwaters of the Potomac River\, and the Maryland and Pennsylvania state lines. Geographically\, it was a pretty straight shot down ‘out of the hills’ to the Washington DC\, Baltimore\, and northern Virginia areas and my family would travel there as much as possible to hear all the incredible bluegrass that was being made there during the 60’s and the 70’s. Washington\, D.C. was a hotbed of bluegrass (both traditional and progressive) at the time with bands like Bob Paisley & Ted Lundy\, Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals\, the Country Gentlemen\, and the Seldom Scene. All of that music affected me deeply then and today I’m having the time of life letting those influences shine through with this band\, Allegheny.” \n			\n				Get Tickets\n			\n				Season Ticket Packages

DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n			\n				Season Ticket Packages\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				“Shines a light on the past without giving up its place in the present”~Rolling Stone Country \nViv & Riley’s sound is old-soul roots music to its core\, elegantly  combining a traditional backbone with the fresh iconic melodies of future-leaning indie-folk\, and the tightly wound vocal harmonies of the old-time and classic country music they came from. Although they grew up on opposite sides of the country\, Riley in Seattle\, Washington\, and Vivian in Lexington\, Virginia\, the two had an instant musical connection upon meeting in 2018. The pair has been collaborating since then\, honing their sound playing hundreds of shows across the US\, UK\, and Canada. Since 2018\, they’ve recorded and released multiple albums to critical acclaim from the likes of NPR Music\, Rolling Stone\, and No Depression\, and have garnered nearly six million streams on Spotify. A bittersweet nostalgia lies at the heart of Imaginary People\, the new album from Viv & Riley\, released September 15\, 2023 on Free Dirt Records. Over ten tracks\, the pair applies an indie roots sheen to newly composed pop gems. Rooted originally in the folk tradition\, the pair reframe the production into experimental territory\, crafting songs that speak to finding a path forward into adulthood in an uncertain world. The album brings a reflectiveness to summertime jams that speak of uninhibited joy and creative camaraderie.  \nBased out of Durham\, North Carolina\, they’ve tapped into the area’s eclectic and collaborative music scene\, recruiting Alex Bingham of Hiss Golden Messenger to produce the album. Bingham brings a sunny\, lush sound to Viv & Riley’s music\, moving beyond their earlier country roots and toward a layered sound and sonic experimentation. The songwriting has evolved as well\, from the world-weary\, stripped-down country songs they’re known for to indie songwriting at turns sweetly sad and gently sardonic. Ultimately\, Imaginary People is about carrying and honoring our pasts\, about letting that inform our new steps forward. This balancing act is familiar territory for Viv & Riley\, who also play in The Onlies\, an award winning old time stringband that Riley co-founded in Seattle at age 7. In that role\, they serve as co-artistic directors of The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n			\n				Season Ticket Packages\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				“Ever since the death of legendary diva Cesária Évora in 2011\, the world has been waiting for another Cape Verdean singer with her sublime poise and emotional power. We may have just found her in Lucibela.” \n— NPR – All Things Considered NPR. \nBorn 1986 on the island of São Nicolau and singing ever since\, Lucibela’s assured\, warm voice is formed from years of assimilation of the sounds of morna and coladera. She began performing with a band while at the high school\, later going on to sing in hotels in Boa Vista\, entertaining tourists\, performing songs made famous by the great singers of Cabo Verde such as Cesária Évora\, Titina or Bana; songs that she knew by heart and made her own. In 2012\, she moved to Praia\, soon attracting attention in the city’s music venues\, finally making a breakthrough at the 2017 Atlantic Music Expo\, leading to invitations to Belgium and Lisbon\, where she recorded her debut album with producer Toy Vieira\, Cesária Évora’s musical director\, furthering her aim of carrying on the great diva’s legacy. \nThis program is presented with generous support from the Performing Arts Global Exchange grant at Mid Atlantic Art. \n			\n				Get Tickets\n			\n				Season Ticket Packages
