A leading voice for the human rights of immigrants\, he founded the non-profit immigrant storytelling organization Define American\, twice named one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company. His best-selling memoir\, Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen\, was published by Harper Collins in 2018. In 2026\, the Brooklyn Public Library named it one of the 250 most notable books in U.S. history. \nDr. William Lopez is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and Faculty Associate in the Latina/o Studies Program. He is the author of Raiding the Heartland: An American Story of Deportation and Resistance\, a follow-up to his award-winning first book\, Separated: Family and Community in the Aftermath of an Immigration Raid. The ingenious machinery of their music is humanized with exploration and passion. \nGuitarist Owen Gardner and saxophonist / percussionist Andrew Bernstein met in the ‘00s at Goucher College in suburban Baltimore—the former steeped in global folk musics and experimental music\, the latter a budding composer. The same thing that led David Ferguson and Grammy Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to co-write and produce their 14th album “Mockingbird” (2018) and release it on his own label Easy Eye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Williams Jr. and Dr. John: the Gibson Brothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing. And they can write a damn good country song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on almost every premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill and Rounder\, and\, if that’s not enough\, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends no less than Del McCoury. It’s a resume almost anybody in country music would be proud to have. But despite all of this\, the Gibson Brothers are not yet household names. Their latest album\, “Darkest Hour\,” produced by dobro master Jerry Douglas might just change that. \nAs soon as you hear Leigh singing with Alison Krauss [“I Feel The Same Way As You”] on the new project you realize that his voice is as good as anyone in music today. Add the brother harmony to that and they have something truly unique. While “Mockingbird” featured gorgeous production\, recreating the sound on stage was difficult. “We put together a little band to go out and try to recreate it\,” Eric told me\, but we couldn’t. We would have to have such a huge band to try to recreate that record\, but we did the best we could.” \nDouglas—who has won 14 Grammy awards and backed up everyone from Ray Charles to Paul Simon and George Jones—wanted to make a record they could actually play on the road. So he picked the best songs (out of dozens) and squirreled them away in Sound Emporium’s Studio B. But then the pandemic hit. “We did our last shows in March of 2020\,” Eric told me. “We were in Nashville the week everything was shutting down. It was surreal\, but Jerry was like\, ‘Guys\, the world’s going crazy. Let’s let this be our little cocoon.’ And we did. We cut all of the acoustic stuff and then went home and didn’t play any more gigs until things started opening. Then we went back and finished the record with Jerry in February of 2021.” \nThe result is arguably the strongest record The Gibson Brothers have ever made.The songs recorded in the first recording period featured Mike Barber (bass)\, Justin Moses (mandolin)\, Eamon McGloughlin (fiddle)\, and of course\, Jerry Douglas\, adding in John Gardner (drums)\, Guthrie Trapp (electric guitar)\, and Todd Parks (bass) for the final tracks\, “Darkest Hour” showcases just how easily Eric and Leigh move from what Dan Auerbach dubbed “country soul”(“I Go Driving”) to high octane bluegrass \n(“What a Difference A Day Makes” and “Dust”) with Douglas always keeping the spotlight on the songs themselves. “That’s what I love about those guys\,” Douglas told me\, “they are just great songwriters.” \nGrowing up on a dairy farm in northern New York and then traveling around the world in a bluegrass band has given them a unique vantage point on life\, and the songs on “Darkest Hour” are a testament to that. “Jerry wanted to hear everything we’d written\,” Eric told me\, “so we just sent him songs: brand new songs\, old songs\, there’s stuff on that record 20 years old that we never recorded. We wanted to see what he would do with us as singer-songwriters. We respect him that much. Some of my favorite records are Jerry Douglas produced records. He didn’t disappoint.” \nIf the Gibson Brothers had stayed in Nashville in 1999 they might possibly be Grand Ole Opry members by now. At the very least they would be hit songwriters on Music Row. But\, just like their buddy Del McCoury\, they chose family over success (McCoury was in his 50s when he moved to Nashville and didn’t really see major success until he was approaching 60).All they need is someone to shine a light on them. Their talent level is well-established\, the only producers they have ever worked with are Ricky Skaggs\, Dan Auerbach\, David Ferguson and Jerry Douglas. I dare say not many musicians can stack up a list of producers that strong. For the Gibson Brothers though\, they just want to keep writing\, singing\, and standing on a stage.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Missy Raines and Allegheny \nAllegheny is Ben Garnett on guitar\, Eli Gilbert on banjo\, Ellie Hakanson on fiddle\, and Tristan Scroggins on mandolin. The band is named for the Allegheny highlands of West Virginia where Raines grew up. This band is a significant nod to her deep traditional bluegrass roots. The music is traditional and hard-driving at its core but energized with Raines’ well-known penchant for originality and innovation. \n“I grew up in West Virginia\, just a few miles from the historic C&O Canal\, the headwaters of the Potomac River\, and the Maryland and Pennsylvania state lines. Geographically\, it was a pretty straight shot down ‘out of the hills’ to the Washington DC\, Baltimore\, and northern Virginia areas and my family would travel there as much as possible to hear all the incredible bluegrass that was being made there during the 60’s and the 70’s. Washington\, D.C. was a hotbed of bluegrass (both traditional and progressive) at the time with bands like Bob Paisley & Ted Lundy\, Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals\, the Country Gentlemen\, and the Seldom Scene. Although they grew up on opposite sides of the country\, Riley in Seattle\, Washington\, and Vivian in Lexington\, Virginia\, the two had an instant musical connection upon meeting in 2018. The pair has been collaborating since then\, honing their sound playing hundreds of shows across the US\, UK\, and Canada. In a career spanning more than 50 years\, Alice has known\, learned from\, and performed with many of the old-time and bluegrass greats and has in turn earned worldwide respect for her own important contributions to the music. In 2017 Alice was inducted into the IBMA Hall of Fame along with Hazel Dickens. A film by Durham filmmaker Kenny Dalsheimer about her life and music You Gave Me a Song\, was shown at the Full Frame Festival in Durham\, NC\, at the Mill Valley Film Festival\, and several others. In 2023 Alice finished her latest recording project\, Sun to Sun\, on the local Durham label\, Sleepy Cat Records. It features all original songs by Alice and one original instrumental by Reed Stutz\, who also plays on the recording\, along with Tatiana Hargreaves\, Hasee Ciaccio\, DaShawn Hickman\, Gail Gillsepie\, Marcy Marxer\, Phil Cook\, Nick Falk\, and Joseph Dejarnette. \nNow 90\, Alice is touring less but still performs and teaches in workshops. The one we were born into is slipping away\, reshaped and denuded by human action. What remains is the question of what we will carry forward\, and the manner in which we refuse to surrender ourselves. Will Oldham’s new album\, We Are Together Again\, feels like an answer to these questions. In Oldham’s songs – and in the circle of others who’ve gathered beneath the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy on this endeavor – friendship\, community\, and the stubborn joy of making art with others become a means of persistence. This isn’t to say that the record is a denial of collapse\, which would be delusion\, so much as that models defiance by remaining fully human\, fully joyful\, in a world with a diminishing horizon… I’m talking about Oldham’s record\, to be sure\, but I think the answers he suggests in We Are Together Again speak to the only meaningful choices any of us can make at this point in all of the agonizing everything.  \nYou can hear it in “Life Is Scary Horses\,” when Oldham concedes\, “The human times have come and gone.  We must accept our rule is done\, though love is sown and will live on. Come to me\, let me see your eyes once more before the winter comes again.” The song modulates from minor to major in tone\, almost sunny. This could read as irony\, but to my ear it’s something closer to grace. That’s the spirit running through We Are Together Again: not denial\, but fragile endurance and thankfulness for the moments we have. \n“Friend Named Joe” and “Davey Dead” form the emotional heart of the record. In the former\, Oldham sings “And when it feels like life is just a series of delusions\, Joe can show that\, even though it all feels like illusion\, it’s real; and yesterday bears no resemblance to tomorrow. You fly towards death so full of life and love and joy and sorrow.” And in the latter\, “If you destroy a child’s perspective\, here’s what that child will do: be faced with unrelenting trial and render terror back at you.”  \nThe album begins and ends with “Why is the Lion” and “Bride of the Lion\,” which serve as thesis and conclusion\, offering an invocation that seems to float above the rest of the work: “Hope of something beginning to rise from the floor of the ring…is it my voice\, or\, better yet\, ours?” A melody cleaning the world\, “scouring the filth from the light.” That’s what the album sounds like: people trying\, not to fix anything\, but to keep the light clear long enough to recognize each other in it. \nThe feeling of community is earned honestly since We Are Together Again is as much as gathering as a record or a statement. The studio becomes a meeting ground\, a small republic of sound. Ramo Teder is a multi-instrumentalist and has been known for his long solo project Pastacas. He is also a looping pioneer in Estonia and has mastered these skills for twenty years already. Marko Veisson has a background in anthropology and his fieldwork in Northern Ghana as well as his love for West-African music have definitely influenced Puuluup’s style. \nThey play their own compositions on Talharpas – a traditional bowed lyre\, popular in Northern Europe since the early Middle Ages and played on Western Estonian islands until the beginning of 20th century. Puuluup directs the vibrations of Talharpa’s horsehair strings through effect blocks and looper\, uses alternative bowing and drumming techniques and sounds. The mellow sighs of talharpa are paired with electronically amplified echoes\, knocks\, creaks and crackles\, while still maintaining the instrument’s natural sound. \nThey play with music as they play with words\, sometimes creating their own language. As the band states: “We draw inspiration from Vormsi nights\, trams in November\, junkies in love\, criminals from Odessa and Antonio Vivaldi”. As a side dish\, when giving live concerts they also offer choreographic flittering which emerged on its own during the numerous days these two man spent in the rehearsal rooms. Their humor and warm charisma flows generously from the stage\, drawing the audience in. \nBecause of their unique approach to this traditional instrument Puuluup received several music awards in Estonia including the best Band\, the best Ensemble\, for the best Album. Their popularity in Estonia and abroad is rapidly growing.
