Opening on Friday\, October 13\, 2023\, and running through Saturday\, November 11\, the exhibition showcases for the first time a collection of paintings\, prints\, sculptures\, and captivating imagery encapsulating Mia’s journey as an artist and the front woman of the influential band\, The Gits. \nMia Zapata’s artistic brilliance flourished during her time at Antioch College in the mid-eighties\, where she created many of the captivating pieces that will be featured in this exhibition. Beyond her artistic pursuits\, Mia’s role as the lead singer of The Gits marked a significant chapter in her life. Originating from Antioch in 1986\, the band swiftly gained prominence and found their place within the vibrant music and social sub-scene of Seattle\, attracting a diverse array of talents and personalities. \nMichael Casselli\, the curator of the exhibit and a close friend of Mia\, shares\, “This exhibition represents more than a mere collection of images; it is a labor of love\, commemorating Mia’s profound impact on my life. SUMMARY:Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Kieran Kane’s seminal work in The O’Kanes and Kane Welch Kaplin\, as well as co-founding the independent label Dead Reckoning Records\, laid the foundation for the contemporary world of Americana music. A successful solo artist\, collaborator\, and songwriter (with songs recorded by Alan Jackson\, John Prine\, Emmylou Harris\, and many more)\, Kieran is a musician’s musician: his playing is always understated\, always groove-oriented\, and always serving the song. \nIf Rayna Gellert seems a preternaturally gifted songwriter\, it’s because she’s seen farther into the old songs than most. Growing up in a musical family\, she turned to Appalachian old-time music at a young age\, becoming a prodigious fiddler and leading a new revival of American stringband music through her work with the acclaimed roots band Uncle Earl. An in-demand collaborator\, she has toured and recorded with artists such as Scott Miller\, Abigail Washburn\, Toubab Krewe\, and Robyn Hitchcock. \nKieran and Rayna first met\, fittingly\, at San Francisco’s celebrated Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, which led to their cowriting songs for Kieran’s solo album Unguarded Moments (Dead Reckoning). They joined forces again for Rayna’s 2017 release\, Workin’s Too Hard (StorySound Records)\, which they also co-produced. Their first duo album\, The Ledges\, was released in February of 2018 on Dead Reckoning Records\, followed up quickly by 2019’s When the Sun Goes Down. \nMost recently this “unlikely musical couple” have released The Flowers That Bloom in Spring\, which finds the duo digging deeper into their exploration of minimalist writing and recording. \nFans of either artist will recognize the musical kindred-spiritedness in their restrained and roots-oriented approach to both songs and arrangements.

SUMMARY:Zoh Amba and Chris Corsano at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:“Amba’s music is a chaotic spiritual exploration\, a path to enlightenment strewn with skronking wails. “The music is God; God is the music\,” she recently told the New York Times — a philosophy that\, although old as time\, has made her one of the brightest new stars in avant-garde jazz.” \n— STEREOGUM (Top 40 Band’s of 2022) \nZoh Amba is a composer\, saxophonist\, and flutist from Tennessee. Her music blends avant-garde\, noise\, and devotional hymns. Before studying music at the San Francisco Conservatory Of Music\, New England Conservatory and studying with David Murray in New York\, she spent most of her time writing and practicing saxophone in the forest near her home. Today\, her powerfully unique avant-garde music is full of folk melodies\, mesmerizing refrains\, and repeated incantations. Amba released two records in 2022\, her debut record O\, Sun which was produced by John Zorn and released on the prestigious label Tzadik. Zoh Amba’s second record\, Bhakti features Micah Thomas\, Tyshawn Sorey\, and Matt Hollenberg. She has collaborated with a variety of high profile musicians such as Jim White (Dirty Three)\, legendary jazz bassist William Parker\, Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)\, etc. Amba has also performed at well respected venues and festivals Roulette (NY)\, Ars Nova Presents (Philadelphia)\, Vision Festival (NY)\, and Angel City Jazz Festival (LA) along with a 2023 Big Ears Festival’s performance. \nhttps://zohamba.com \n \n
