He carries in his soul a cumbiambero heart inherited from his grandfather Andrés Landero: a musician recognized as the king of cumbia nationally and internationally. His poetry has been published in Muzzle\, Vinyl\, PEN American\, and various other journals. His essays and music criticism have been published in The FADER\, Pitchfork\, The New Yorker\, and The New York Times. Hanif’s newest release\, There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension (Random House\, 2024) is a poignant\, personal reflection on basketball\, life\, and home. The book was a #1 national bestseller\, a New York Times bestseller\, the winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism\, and longlisted for both the National Book Award and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. His first full length poetry collection\, The Crown Ain’t Worth Much\, was released in June 2016 from Button Poetry. Freestyle fiddler\, composer\, producer and educator\, Darol Anger is at home in a number of musical genres\, some of which he helped to invent.
