DESCRIPTION:The Global Racial and Social Justice Summit hosted by the Coretta Scott King Center for Intellectual Freedom will feature a dance performance\, “Mareas/Tides\,” by Denison University dance faculty\, Marion Ramirez and Ojeya Cruz Banks\, and music faculty\, celebrating sacred celestial-ocean relationships through story-telling\, song\, and improvisation. It traces the storied geographies between and through Puerto Rico\, Guåhan to Aotearoa to Alabama to Senegal. The performance braids the artists’ distinct island cosmologies together and embodies the gravitational power of the African diaspora flowing through the Caribbean and Indigenous Pacific worlds. DESCRIPTION:Global Racial and Social Justice Summit\nAnother World is Possible\nDate: February 13-16\, 2025  \nLocation: Coretta Scott King Center \nAntioch College’s Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom invites you to participate in the upcoming Global Racial and Social Justice Summit\, held in-person from February 13–16\, 2025\, in the historic town of Yellow Springs\, Ohio. \nThis year’s summit theme\, “Another World is Possible\,” will create a vital space for academics\, artists\, activists\, community organizers\, and students to convene\, discuss\, and strategize around pressing racial and social justice issues. The summit will center on collective resistance and envisioning a more equitable and inclusive future amidst rising global challenges. \nOver 35 individuals and groups from across the country submitted proposals to offer workshops\, art exhibitions\, performances\, research paper presentations\, and panel discussions that will be featured throughout the gathering. Opening on Friday\, October 13\, 2023\, and running through Saturday\, November 11\, the exhibition showcases for the first time a collection of paintings\, prints\, sculptures\, and captivating imagery encapsulating Mia’s journey as an artist and the front woman of the influential band\, The Gits. \nMia Zapata’s artistic brilliance flourished during her time at Antioch College in the mid-eighties\, where she created many of the captivating pieces that will be featured in this exhibition. Beyond her artistic pursuits\, Mia’s role as the lead singer of The Gits marked a significant chapter in her life. Originating from Antioch in 1986\, the band swiftly gained prominence and found their place within the vibrant music and social sub-scene of Seattle\, attracting a diverse array of talents and personalities. \nMichael Casselli\, the curator of the exhibit and a close friend of Mia\, shares\, “This exhibition represents more than a mere collection of images; it is a labor of love\, commemorating Mia’s profound impact on my life. DESCRIPTION:  \n \n**Herndon Gallery at Antioch College Proudly Presents “Mia Zapata: A Place Within” – A Tribute to the Creative Legacy of an Alumna and Front woman of The Gits \n Herndon Gallery at Antioch College is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated unveiling of “Mia Zapata: a place within\,” an exclusive exhibition paying homage to the remarkable talent and vibrant spirit of esteemed alumna Mia Zapata. Opening on Friday\, October 13\, 2023\, and running through Saturday\, November 11\, the exhibition showcases for the first time a collection of paintings\, prints\, sculptures\, and captivating imagery encapsulating Mia’s journey as an artist and the front woman of the influential band\, The Gits. \nMia Zapata’s artistic brilliance flourished during her time at Antioch College in the mid-eighties\, where she created many of the captivating pieces that will be featured in this exhibition. Beyond her artistic pursuits\, Mia’s role as the lead singer of The Gits marked a significant chapter in her life. Originating from Antioch in 1986\, the band swiftly gained prominence and found their place within the vibrant music and social sub-scene of Seattle\, attracting a diverse array of talents and personalities. \nMichael Casselli\, the curator of the exhibit and a close friend of Mia\, shares\, “This exhibition represents more than a mere collection of images; it is a labor of love\, commemorating Mia’s profound impact on my life. Our enduring friendship\, which began during our days at Antioch\, inspired this celebration of Mia’s rich creative legacy.” \nThe Herndon Gallery extends sincere gratitude to the Zapata family for their generous support\, enabling the gallery to share these cherished works that have remained integral to their lives over the years. Special acknowledgment is also extended to photographers Julianne Andersen and Charles Peterson for their contributions to this remarkable showcase. \nThe exhibition “Mia Zapata: A Place Within” will open its doors on Friday\, October 13\, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and will continue to welcome visitors through Saturday\, November 11\, 2023.
