DESCRIPTION:Herndon Gallery invites you to witness\nBlack History: A Work in Progress\nAn exploration and exhibition highlighting Black History and its constant influence on our lives. \nFebruary 18 – March 28\, 2022\nGallery Hours Tuesday through Saturday 1 pm – 4 pm \nThe frame\, for lack of a better word\, is in recognizing and celebrating black history and black folk’s contributions across different aspects of the culture\, and how those contributions have come from this area specifically. Contributions from the Antioch community\, contributions by organizations that are part of the community of Yellow Springs\, contributions from scholars\, visual artists\, performance artists\, musicians\, students from the college to students from the schools in town. \nThe common connection is in the intersectional nature of our relationships to each other in this part of Ohio\, and the recognition that the eclectic mix of materials in the exhibition further demonstrate that black history is our history\, it appears everywhere\, and that by celebrating its importance transcends the idea that one month a year provides adequate representation. Julian\, like many other members of the community\, felt the urge to do something. For over 20 weeks\, YS Black Lives Matter led by Julian and many others\, met every week\, organized marches\, civil disobedience and gained momentum that in turn uplifted black artists\, speakers\, and activists in the Village of Yellow Springs and the broader Dayton and regional area. \nJulie\, is an example of the power of collective action\, and multigenerational community organizing. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Dion GreenThe Coretta Scott King Legacy Award 2022 \nMr. Dion Green is the Founder/CEO of Flourishing Under Distress Given Encouragement (FUDGE) a nonprofit that helps survivors through traumatic experiences with resources and support. Mr. Green is a survivor\, overcoming many personal obstacles and showing others how they can survive too. He is an advocate on issues of gun violence\, mental health\, and gun legislation inspired by the mass shooting that occurred in Dayton\, Ohio in August of 2019\, which claimed his father’s life and many other innocent victims. Dion speaks around the country and in communities that have been impacted by gun violence. In addition to his foundation\, gun legislation advocacy service\, and gun rally participation\, he serves on the Board of Felons with a Future\, Upturn Ohio and numerous other community initiatives and support networks across the country. Mr. Green is a mentor\, leader and change agent for the community. \nDion\, is an example of the power of healing\, advocacy\, and strategic action on behalf of our local and national communities. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Adriane H. MillerThe Coretta Scott King Legacy Award 2022 \nAdriane is currently the Executive Director at the National Conference for Community and Justice of Greater Dayton (NCCJ). While in this position she has helped the organization expand their youth and corporate programming providing opportunities to help create both individual and organizational change agents. She collaborated in creating and implementing Diversity 101\, a four-part training series that has been implemented in many organizations throughout the Miami Valley. Adriane Miller is a passionate\, insightful and committed community connector who sees potential in every situation. She works to create brave spaces where everyone feels welcome. Adriane is respected for her openness\, honesty and ability to connect with everyone. \nAdriane is an example of the importance of being intentional in our relationships. As a community connector\, she brings together multiple perspectives and actively seeks to create spaces that are multigenerational and brave for us all.

Claude Motley and his family were visiting their former hometown of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, when 15-year-old Nathan King attempted to carjack his rented Dodge Charger. In the process\, Nathan shot Claude in the face. \nThat moment is the axis on which Claude’s world turned\, derailing him from his own legal career only to throw him in the middle of the criminal justice system as a victim\, and the key to his shooter’s fate. When Claude Got Shot chronicles five years in Claude’s physical and mental recovery journey. Persisting through multiple surgeries\, catastrophic health care bills\, and the lingering emotional aftermath of that traumatic night\, Claude finds himself torn between punishment for Nathan and the injustice of mass incarceration for Black men and boys. \nFor Claude\, the path to recovery ultimately leads to forgiveness.But that path proves to be a fraught one\, paved with all the complexities that race\, violence\, justice\, and healthcare can possibly present.

DESCRIPTION:An In-Person and Online Event\, Open to the Public\nOn Wednesday\, June 15th at 7pm\, Dr. Jennifer Grubbs\, an Antioch College anthropology professor\, will discuss her new book\, Ecoliberation: Reimagining Resistance and the Green Scare (McGill-Queens University Press\, 2021). The event will take place on the Antioch College campus\, in ASB 219\, the Cinema Room. COVID-19 vaccination is required to attend. The discussion will also be available online. Please visit this link for online advance registration. \nDisenchanted by indirect forms of protest designed to work within existing systems of corporate and state power\, animal and earth liberation activists have turned instead to direct action. In Ecoliberation\, Dr. Grubbs takes the reader inside the complicated\, intricate world of these powerful and controversial interventions\, nuancing the harrowing realities of political repression with inspiring clever ways that activists resist. Nearly a decade in the making\, the book looks back at the notorious period of repression called the Green Scare and draws contemporary connections to the creep of fascism under former President\, Donald Trump. \nDr. Grubbs is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Antioch College. She earned her doctorate from American University in Washington\, D.C.\, in Anthropology\, specializing in Race\, Gender\, and Social Justice. She has conducted ethnographic work with environmental and animal advocacy movements based in North America\, immigration-support communities in rural Virginia\, and with Holocaust survivors residing in Cincinnati\, Ohio. Her current research bridges feminist anthropology\, environmental communication\, and queer studies\, both in method and application\, through an examination of companion animal and farming programs in carceral spaces.

DESCRIPTION:THE POP WAGNER GREENE COUNTY TRIO IN CONCERT THURSDAY\, JULY 7\nThree Yellow Springers join forces for a fun-packed event at Foundry Theater. Tickets on sale June 1. \nDubbed The Pop Wagner Greene County Trio\, three musicians with Yellow Springs ties will be in concert on Thursday\, July 7\, at the Foundry Theater at Antioch College. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Pop Wagner —a Yellow Springs native who moved to the Twin Cities decades ago —is a singer\, songwriter\, storyteller\, guitar picker\, fiddler\, lariat-trick artist\, and downright funny guy. His performances of cowboy songs\, old-time fiddle tunes\, country blues\, and more have won over audiences across 44 states and 14countries. This Ohio trip marks a sort of homecoming: he will also be attending his 55th Yellow Springs High School class reunion. \nJoining Pop is another YSHS graduate\, Gregory “Duke” Dewey\, on washboard. You may have heard Dewey on drums with any number of bands\, including Country Joe and the Fish in a soggy set at Woodstock 1969. And rounding out the trio\, is bassist Ben Cooper\, a Greene County resident who performed with Rhythm inShoes and is a member of the Ohio Corndaddies string band. \nIn addition to the Foundry Theater show\, concertgoers can choose to add a VIP reception (complete with refreshments and Pop’s lariat tricks and humor) to the music- and fun-packed evening. \nThe events are sponsored by public radio station WYSO-FM and Yellow Springs Home\, Inc. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Antioch College Reunion will return as an in-person event in Yellow Springs this July 14-17th! \nWe are so excited to welcome back to campus all classes especially the 50th class of 1972 (plus 1971 and 1970 who missed their 50th in-person reunions due to the pandemic). Other anniversary years like the 5th\, 25th and 65th are encouraged to organize your cohort to return this year! \nWe are planning a variety of presentations\, scintillating conversations and interactive events to entice alums from every discipline back to Campus. DESCRIPTION:Yellow Springs Porchfest is a free\, neighbor-driven day celebrating music and community. It’s an annual event\, from noon to 7pm on the third Saturday in September. (Save the date! This year’s Porchfest falls on September 17\, 2022.) \nDuring this time\, local musicians will play on the porches\, front yards\, and patios of homes and businesses within about a half mile radius of downtown Yellow Springs. A map with porches and performers will be available\, and neighbors are encouraged to walk or bike around the village. \nWho’s this for? Everyone! The biggest item on the agenda was “the college project”. \nExactly three years later\, almost to the hour in fact\, Horace Mann was installed as the first president of Antioch College before an assembled throng of over 3\,000 – twice the population of Yellow Springs at the time. \nFounders’ Day 2022\nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Flourishing is a collection of work depicting a more complete image of the Black experience outside of the tragedies romanticized across the media. DESCRIPTION:On November 8th\, Ohioans will go to the polls to elect a governor\, congressional and state representatives\, and members of the state supreme court. But are these elections structured in the optimal way? \nTo find out more\, come to a talk on Wednesday\, October 26th from 6-7pm on Antioch College Campus on “The mathematics of voting: on how to count the votes so that your vote counts” by Dr. Emily Riehl\, a professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins University. The most common procedure\, selecting the person who receives the most votes\, can lead to elected officials that only a small minority of public supports. This talk will introduce other voting procedures that allow voters to express more nuanced preferences while touring some of the mathematical paradoxes inherent in elections. These considerations are equally relevant for the election of the next community manager\, mayor\, representative\, senator\, or president.
