SUMMARY:Getting To The Root: 2 Day Intensive Workshop on Racial Equity and Justice

Claude Motley and his family were visiting their former hometown of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, when 15-year-old Nathan King attempted to carjack his rented Dodge Charger. In the process\, Nathan shot Claude in the face. \nThat moment is the axis on which Claude’s world turned\, derailing him from his own legal career only to throw him in the middle of the criminal justice system as a victim\, and the key to his shooter’s fate. When Claude Got Shot chronicles five years in Claude’s physical and mental recovery journey. Persisting through multiple surgeries\, catastrophic health care bills\, and the lingering emotional aftermath of that traumatic night\, Claude finds himself torn between punishment for Nathan and the injustice of mass incarceration for Black men and boys. \nFor Claude\, the path to recovery ultimately leads to forgiveness. But that path proves to be a fraught one\, paved with all the complexities that race\, violence\, justice\, and healthcare can possibly present.

SUMMARY:HERNDON EXHIBITIONS/Black History: A Work In Progress
DESCRIPTION:Herndon Gallery invites you to witness\nBlack History: A Work in Progress\nAn exploration and exhibition highlighting Black History and its constant influence on our lives. \nFebruary 18 – March 28\, 2022\nGallery Hours Tuesday through Saturday 1 pm – 4 pm \nThe frame\, for lack of a better word\, is in recognizing and celebrating black history and black folk’s contributions across different aspects of the culture\, and how those contributions have come from this area specifically. Contributions from the Antioch community\, contributions by organizations that are part of the community of Yellow Springs\, contributions from scholars\, visual artists\, performance artists\, musicians\, students from the college to students from the schools in town. \nThe common connection is in the intersectional nature of our relationships to each other in this part of Ohio\, and the recognition that the eclectic mix of materials in the exhibition further demonstrate that black history is our history\, it appears everywhere\, and that by celebrating its importance transcends the idea that one month a year provides adequate representation. This practice only makes it easy for people to compartmentalize the work that is ongoing 24 hours of the day\, 365 days of the year.  \nThis multi-media exhibit features artwork and material contributions from: \nCecil Taylor\nBen Shahn\nGabrielle Civil\nTruth Garrett\nJewel Graham\nThe People’s Banner Workshop\nJohn Sims\nSumayah Chapelle\nMatt Shelton\nSarah Dickens\nChuck Smart\nBing Davis\nKarsten Creightney\nRosamond S. SUMMARY:Virtual Screening of "Apart"
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Screening of Apart\nThursday\, February 10\, 2022\, 7:00-8:30 PM \nThe Coretta Scott King Center for Intellectual and Cultural Freedom of Antioch College and Independent Lens\, ITVS Correspondent Michael Bare\, 02’ are pleased to announce a virtual screening preview of Apart\, an intimate portrait that examines the impact of America’s war on drugs on the lives of three mothers who rebuild their lives by participating in an  innovative prison program in Cleveland\, Ohio. \nAs Tomika\, Lydia\, and Amanda prepare to rejoin their families after years of incarceration they lean on each other and on mentors who have also been in prison\, with the hope of redemption on the horizon\, the women work to regain the trust of their children and combat stigmas associated with people who have been incarcerated. This is a poignant film about the intersection of gender\, class\, race and the systemic and structural realities of oppression in the lives of those incarcerated and their families. \nThe Coretta Scott King Center for Intellectual and Cultural Freedom wishes to thank screening partners\, Building Freedom Ohio; Legal Services for Prisoners with Children; Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry; Ohio Organizing Collaborative; Oklahomans for Criminal Justice Reform; Represent Justice; Voice of the Experienced (VOTE) for their courage and resolve\, by lifting the voices in these stories we make a small step towards centering humanity. \nWe also wish to thank Mary Evans\, Events and Social Media Manager\, Matt Walker Advancement Services Assistant and faculty member\, Catalina Jordan\, Assistant Professor of Media Arts for their vision and commitment to partnering with organizations whose work is an active contribution to the Prison Justice movement in our nation. \nRegister here: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/apart-an-independent-lens-stories-for-justice-screening-and-conversation-tickets-239447954277 \nIf you would like additional information\, please email us at cskc@antiochcollege.edu
