DESCRIPTION:For its inaugural event Herndon Gallery/Herndon Speaks presents:Community Conversations:Listening to Artists Impacted by the Justice System \nOhio Prison Arts Connection (OPAC) will partner with four arts spaces in four cities around the state to exhibit its second commissioned poster series. The posters are created by justice-impacted artists and will be available for sale\, with all proceeds being returned to the artist. At each exhibition site\, OPAC will also host and convene a celebration and community conversation with the intention of building relationships and conversations about how the arts and culture sector can extend their resources to support people impacted by the criminal legal system and by incarceration. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				This project supports our mission to use our diverse network of stakeholders around the state to gather resources\, storytelling spaces\, and collaborations at the intersection of the arts and the justice system to benefit Ohioans and artists. Our primary intended outcomes are to provide an expanded audience for the work of six talented artists\, and to elevate the conversation in Ohio about how\, on a practical level\, arts and culture institutions\, initiatives\, and leaders can mobilize their existing assets in the direction of people impacted by the justice system. \nNicole Fleetwood\, in her groundbreaking book Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration\, argues that in order to more fully and deeply understand the American arts landscape\, we must understand the contributions to form\, content\, and theme that are a part of art made by people who are or were incarcerated. Centered around the telling of family history and the role of generational sharing in understanding\, growth and self-worth\, Freedom Flight wrestles with the ongoing legacy of slavery and identity. When Evelyn\, a descendant of Addison White\, confronts her own difficulties with racism\, an array of characters tell and relive their family history\, illustrating the tension\, drama and the promise of deliverance from bigotry. Freedom Flight explores the unwritten roadmap between past and present\, and the relationship between the things that we leave behind and those that carry us forward.

DESCRIPTION:Keynote Speaker\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Purchase Tickets\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Sponsorship\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Keynote Speaker\nBarbara Major\, Author\, Deconstructing Racism\, A Path towards Lasting Change \nBarbara Major – People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond \nBarbara is a veteran antiracist community organizer from New Orleans and her family originates from Franklinton\,  Louisiana. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in sociology\, and a Master’s in Social Work.  She is one of the founding members of the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (https://www.pisab.org) and has been for the last 40 years organizing as an antiracist community organizer. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina\, Barbara co-chaired the “Rebuilding New Orleans”  Commission and met with President George W. Bush and his team in an effort to protect local folks’ property from the impending efforts to displace them after that tragic storm. \nAbout the book \nIn Deconstructing Racism\, Barbara and Joe propose the deconstruction of racism’s roots within systems and institutions that have been created\, both structurally and legally\, to serve white people. The authors propose that the deconstruction of racism must take place through the reconstruction of these systems and institutions. \nThe authors seek to unmask the complexities of racism and the invisible patterns that keep it in place. There is no quick fix\, but they believe racism can be deconstructed and undone. In order to do this\, they identify and address race-based identity\, history\, and cultural issues rooted in current systems. \nThree chapters specifically address societal systems and provide anti-racism strategies for community organizers. Three chapters address racism as rooted in systems in the church and challenge people of faith to seek racial healing through understanding\, honest confession\, true reconciliation\, and reconstructed church institutions. A final chapter outlines a way forward to and through a new era of anti-racist reconstruction. This way forward includes a new anti-racist mission statement\, a new model of decision-making power\, and new processes for accountability.

DESCRIPTION:Herndon Gallery proudly presents “Mia Zapata: A Place Within\,” an exclusive exhibition featuring a collection of paintings\, prints\, and sculptures by Mia Zapata\, an esteemed alumna from the 1980s. During her time at Antioch College in the mid-eighties\, Mia crafted many of the stunning pieces showcased in this exhibition. Notably\, Mia was also the frontwoman for the influential band\, The Gits. The band originated in Antioch in 1986 and later relocated to Seattle\, with Mia leading the charge alongside fellow band members guitarist Joe Spleen\, bass player Matt Dresdner\, and drummer Steve Moriarty\, all classmates of Mia’s at Antioch. \n“As The Gits flourished in the Pacific Northwest\, they became the focal point of a thriving music and social sub-scene\, attracting a host of talented musicians\, artists\, and unique individuals\, including a few notable and eccentric billionaires.” (https://www.thegits.com) Over their four-year tenure in Seattle\, The Gits’ unwavering dedication to their music deepened\, and their electrifying live performances garnered a fiercely loyal fan base across the United States and Europe. \nWithin this remarkable exhibition\, you’ll find  images capturing Mia and her bandmates in the throes of their magnetic performances\, vividly portraying the essence of their energetic stage presence in Seattle. We owe our heartfelt gratitude to the Zapata family\, whose generous support allowed the gallery to borrow these cherished works that have been integral to their lives for many years.  We would also like to thank photographers Julianne Andersen and Charles Peterson for agreeing to provide the photos that are included in this show. \nIn my role as the curator of the exhibit\, this is more than a collection of images presented for a gallery visitor\, it is a labor of love considering Mia’s profound impact on my life. SUMMARY:Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Kieran Kane’s seminal work in The O’Kanes and Kane Welch Kaplin\, as well as co-founding the independent label Dead Reckoning Records\, laid the foundation for the contemporary world of Americana music. A successful solo artist\, collaborator\, and songwriter (with songs recorded by Alan Jackson\, John Prine\, Emmylou Harris\, and many more)\, Kieran is a musician’s musician: his playing is always understated\, always groove-oriented\, and always serving the song. \nIf Rayna Gellert seems a preternaturally gifted songwriter\, it’s because she’s seen farther into the old songs than most. Growing up in a musical family\, she turned to Appalachian old-time music at a young age\, becoming a prodigious fiddler and leading a new revival of American stringband music through her work with the acclaimed roots band Uncle Earl. An in-demand collaborator\, she has toured and recorded with artists such as Scott Miller\, Abigail Washburn\, Toubab Krewe\, and Robyn Hitchcock. \nKieran and Rayna first met\, fittingly\, at San Francisco’s celebrated Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, which led to their cowriting songs for Kieran’s solo album Unguarded Moments (Dead Reckoning). They joined forces again for Rayna’s 2017 release\, Workin’s Too Hard (StorySound Records)\, which they also co-produced. Their first duo album\, The Ledges\, was released in February of 2018 on Dead Reckoning Records\, followed up quickly by 2019’s When the Sun Goes Down. \nMost recently this “unlikely musical couple” have released The Flowers That Bloom in Spring\, which finds the duo digging deeper into their exploration of minimalist writing and recording. \nFans of either artist will recognize the musical kindred-spiritedness in their restrained and roots-oriented approach to both songs and arrangements.
