The film begins its journey inside a Texas prison\, after these women have spent nearly a decade behind bars. They were 19 and 20 years old at the time that allegations surfaced. \nUsing the women’s home video footage from 21 years ago combined with recent verité footage and interviews\, the film explores their personal narratives and their search for exculpatory evidence to help their losing criminal trials. 15 years into their journey\, director Deborah S. Esquenazi captures an on-camera recantation by one of the initial outcry victims\, now 25 years old although 7 at the time of the investigation. This brings the filmmaker into the role of investigator along with attorneys at the Innocence Project\, who are just beginning their quest for truth in this case. \nTogether with attorneys\, the film culminates with the women being released from prison to await their searing new exoneration hearings in San Antonio. Helming new legislation\, this is the first case in U.S. history that allows wrongfully convicted innocents to challenge convictions based on ‘Junk Science’\, or debunked forensics. As lesbian low income women of color\, these women hold intersecting identities that make them the most vulnerable to incarceration and juror bias. This under-reported injustice is actually widespread: Latina women represent one of the growing populations heading into prison. In addition\, most reported exonerations and wrongful convictions focus solely on men and cases involving women\, let alone lesbian women of color are largely under-reported. The quartet\, formed in 2010\, embraces Renaissance counterpoint\, covers composer Julius Eastman\, plays instruments specially fretted for microtonality\, and organizes its music through polyrhythmic matrices. The ingenious machinery of their music is humanized with exploration and passion. \nGuitarist Owen Gardner and saxophonist / percussionist Andrew Bernstein met in the ‘00s at Goucher College in suburban Baltimore—the former steeped in global folk musics and experimental music\, the latter a budding composer. As members of the rich Baltimore music scene\, notably the band Teeth Mountain\, they met bassist Max Eilbacher\, who has subsequently blazed a path in electroacoustic music\, and drummer Sam Haberman. \nFrom the beginning\, Horse Lords have played music defined by repetition and complexity\, often at length\, and presented it in ways that telegraph their concern with questioning social and political norms. “Conceptually\, our music is always interested in the tension between the aesthetic\, the political\, and the material domains of art\, and the political muteness of instrumental music\,” the band says. “How can we imbue wordless music with a radical political message? The same thing that led David Ferguson and Grammy Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to co-write and produce their 14th album “Mockingbird” (2018) and release it on his own label Easy Eye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Williams Jr. and Dr. John: the Gibson Brothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing. And they can write a damn good country song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on almost every premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill and Rounder\, and\, if that’s not enough\, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends no less than Del McCoury. It’s a resume almost anybody in country music would be proud to have. But despite all of this\, the Gibson Brothers are not yet household names. Their latest album\, “Darkest Hour\,” produced by dobro master Jerry Douglas might just change that. \nAs soon as you hear Leigh singing with Alison Krauss [“I Feel The Same Way As You”] on the new project you realize that his voice is as good as anyone in music today. Add the brother harmony to that and they have something truly unique. While “Mockingbird” featured gorgeous production\, recreating the sound on stage was difficult. “We put together a little band to go out and try to recreate it\,” Eric told me\, but we couldn’t. We would have to have such a huge band to try to recreate that record\, but we did the best we could.” \nDouglas—who has won 14 Grammy awards and backed up everyone from Ray Charles to Paul Simon and George Jones—wanted to make a record they could actually play on the road. So he picked the best songs (out of dozens) and squirreled them away in Sound Emporium’s Studio B. But then the pandemic hit. “We did our last shows in March of 2020\,” Eric told me. “We were in Nashville the week everything was shutting down. It was surreal\, but Jerry was like\, ‘Guys\, the world’s going crazy. Let’s let this be our little cocoon.’ And we did. We cut all of the acoustic stuff and then went home and didn’t play any more gigs until things started opening. Then we went back and finished the record with Jerry in February of 2021.” \nThe result is arguably the strongest record The Gibson Brothers have ever made.The songs recorded in the first recording period featured Mike Barber (bass)\, Justin Moses (mandolin)\, Eamon McGloughlin (fiddle)\, and of course\, Jerry Douglas\, adding in John Gardner (drums)\, Guthrie Trapp (electric guitar)\, and Todd Parks (bass) for the final tracks\, “Darkest Hour” showcases just how easily Eric and Leigh move from what Dan Auerbach dubbed “country soul”(“I Go Driving”) to high octane bluegrass \n(“What a Difference A Day Makes” and “Dust”) with Douglas always keeping the spotlight on the songs themselves. “That’s what I love about those guys\,” Douglas told me\, “they are just great songwriters.” \nGrowing up on a dairy farm in northern New York and then traveling around the world in a bluegrass band has given them a unique vantage point on life\, and the songs on “Darkest Hour” are a testament to that. “Jerry wanted to hear everything we’d written\,” Eric told me\, “so we just sent him songs: brand new songs\, old songs\, there’s stuff on that record 20 years old that we never recorded. We wanted to see what he would do with us as singer-songwriters. We respect him that much. Some of my favorite records are Jerry Douglas produced records. He didn’t disappoint.” \nIf the Gibson Brothers had stayed in Nashville in 1999 they might possibly be Grand Ole Opry members by now. At the very least they would be hit songwriters on Music Row. But\, just like their buddy Del McCoury\, they chose family over success (McCoury was in his 50s when he moved to Nashville and didn’t really see major success until he was approaching 60).All they need is someone to shine a light on them. Their talent level is well-established\, the only producers they have ever worked with are Ricky Skaggs\, Dan Auerbach\, David Ferguson and Jerry Douglas. I dare say not many musicians can stack up a list of producers that strong. For the Gibson Brothers though\, they just want to keep writing\, singing\, and standing on a stage.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Missy Raines and Allegheny \nAllegheny is Ben Garnett on guitar\, Eli Gilbert on banjo\, Ellie Hakanson on fiddle\, and Tristan Scroggins on mandolin. The band is named for the Allegheny highlands of West Virginia where Raines grew up. This band is a significant nod to her deep traditional bluegrass roots. The music is traditional and hard-driving at its core but energized with Raines’ well-known penchant for originality and innovation. \n“I grew up in West Virginia\, just a few miles from the historic C&O Canal\, the headwaters of the Potomac River\, and the Maryland and Pennsylvania state lines. Geographically\, it was a pretty straight shot down ‘out of the hills’ to the Washington DC\, Baltimore\, and northern Virginia areas and my family would travel there as much as possible to hear all the incredible bluegrass that was being made there during the 60’s and the 70’s. Washington\, D.C. was a hotbed of bluegrass (both traditional and progressive) at the time with bands like Bob Paisley & Ted Lundy\, Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals\, the Country Gentlemen\, and the Seldom Scene. Then Volunteer Work Project (VWP) is for you! \nVWP meets four times a year. College alumni and friends spend two to five days addressing top priorities to keep the College campus clean\, green and well-maintained. No task is too small or project too large. In exchange for our labor\, VWP provides happy hours and home-cooked meals. Volunteers may make arrangements at hotels or AirBnbs nearby or request assistance getting matched with local alumni with rooms available. The College houses VWP during the July work week. \nAll you need is a willing spirit\, a commitment to sustaining the College campus\, and a collaborative attitude. In a career spanning more than 50 years\, Alice has known\, learned from\, and performed with many of the old-time and bluegrass greats and has in turn earned worldwide respect for her own important contributions to the music. Known for her groundbreaking collaboration with Appalachian singer Hazel Dickens during the 1960s and ’70s\, the duo produced four classic Hazel and Alice LPs on Rounder and Smithsonian Folkways that influenced scores of young women singers. \nA tireless advocate of traditional music\, Alice has won numerous honors\, including an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Distinguished Achievement Award\, a Virginia Arts Commission Award\, the North Carolina Folklore Society’s Tommy Jarrell Award\, and an Indy Award. In 2017 Alice was inducted into the IBMA Hall of Fame along with Hazel Dickens. A film by Durham filmmaker Kenny Dalsheimer about her life and music You Gave Me a Song\, was shown at the Full Frame Festival in Durham\, NC\, at the Mill Valley Film Festival\, and several others. In 2023 Alice finished her latest recording project\, Sun to Sun\, on the local Durham label\, Sleepy Cat Records.
