Scott has been at Antioch since 1994 and has lovingly stewarded the College’s collection of books\, artifacts\, and historical records for over 30 years. Here’s your chance to hear him talk about the interesting and entertaining history of Antioch! \nThis monthly series of one hour presentations will be held both in-person at the Olive Kettering Library and virtually via Zoom. Presentations are free and open to the public. There will be time for Q&A after each presentation. DESCRIPTION:Can you measure and cut a piece of plywood? Prep and paint a wall or door? Refurbish a teak bench? Tell a weed from a flower? Cook a meal for 100? Stuff 250 Reunion packets? Change oil or fix a carburetor? Then Volunteer Work Project (VWP) is for you! \nVWP meets four times a year. College alumni and friends spend two to five days addressing top priorities to keep the College campus clean\, green and well-maintained. No task is too small or project too large. In exchange for our labor\, VWP provides happy hours and home-cooked meals. Volunteers may make arrangements at hotels or AirBnbs nearby or request assistance getting matched with local alumni with rooms available. The College houses VWP during the July work week. \nAll you need is a willing spirit\, a commitment to sustaining the College campus\, and a collaborative attitude. Bring work gloves\, paint clothes\, and your favorite tool. We have everything else\, and VWP organizers will direct you to a project to match your skills and interests. You will make new friends across the ages and maintain contact with old friends. SUMMARY:Horse Lords at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Horse Lords\nAs an instrumental unit\, Horse Lords rely on a collective voice and focus to provide the band’s core strength; a process enriched by their disparate musical interests. The quartet\, formed in 2010\, embraces Renaissance counterpoint\, covers composer Julius Eastman\, plays instruments specially fretted for microtonality\, and organizes its music through polyrhythmic matrices. The ingenious machinery of their music is humanized with exploration and passion. \nGuitarist Owen Gardner and saxophonist / percussionist Andrew Bernstein met in the ‘00s at Goucher College in suburban Baltimore—the former steeped in global folk musics and experimental music\, the latter a budding composer. As members of the rich Baltimore music scene\, notably the band Teeth Mountain\, they met bassist Max Eilbacher\, who has subsequently blazed a path in electroacoustic music\, and drummer Sam Haberman. \nFrom the beginning\, Horse Lords have played music defined by repetition and complexity\, often at length\, and presented it in ways that telegraph their concern with questioning social and political norms. “Conceptually\, our music is always interested in the tension between the aesthetic\, the political\, and the material domains of art\, and the political muteness of instrumental music\,” the band says. “How can we imbue wordless music with a radical political message? SUMMARY:The Gibson Brothers with Missy Raines & Alleghany at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:“The Gibson Brothers have built their legacy upon a sound that salutes the past while still pushing forward.”\nROLLING STONE\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				The Gibson Brothers \nThere’s a reason why Ricky Skaggs pulled Eric and Leigh Gibson off the stage at the Ryman two decades ago and offered to produce their debut record. The same thing that led David Ferguson and Grammy Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to co-write and produce their 14th album “Mockingbird” (2018) and release it on his own label Easy Eye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Williams Jr. and Dr. John: the Gibson Brothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing. And they can write a damn good country song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on almost every premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill and Rounder\, and\, if that’s not enough\, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends no less than Del McCoury. It’s a resume almost anybody in country music would be proud to have. But despite all of this\, the Gibson Brothers are not yet household names. Their latest album\, “Darkest Hour\,” produced by dobro master Jerry Douglas might just change that. \nAs soon as you hear Leigh singing with Alison Krauss [“I Feel The Same Way As You”] on the new project you realize that his voice is as good as anyone in music today. Add the brother harmony to that and they have something truly unique. While “Mockingbird” featured gorgeous production\, recreating the sound on stage was difficult. “We put together a little band to go out and try to recreate it\,” Eric told me\, but we couldn’t. We would have to have such a huge band to try to recreate that record\, but we did the best we could.” \nDouglas—who has won 14 Grammy awards and backed up everyone from Ray Charles to Paul Simon and George Jones—wanted to make a record they could actually play on the road. So he picked the best songs (out of dozens) and squirreled them away in Sound Emporium’s Studio B. But then the pandemic hit. “We did our last shows in March of 2020\,” Eric told me. “We were in Nashville the week everything was shutting down. It was surreal\, but Jerry was like\, ‘Guys\, the world’s going crazy. Let’s let this be our little cocoon.’ And we did. We cut all of the acoustic stuff and then went home and didn’t play any more gigs until things started opening. Then we went back and finished the record with Jerry in February of 2021.” \nThe result is arguably the strongest record The Gibson Brothers have ever made.The songs recorded in the first recording period featured Mike Barber (bass)\, Justin Moses (mandolin)\, Eamon McGloughlin (fiddle)\, and of course\, Jerry Douglas\, adding in John Gardner (drums)\, Guthrie Trapp (electric guitar)\, and Todd Parks (bass) for the final tracks\, “Darkest Hour” showcases just how easily Eric and Leigh move from what Dan Auerbach dubbed “country soul”(“I Go Driving”) to high octane bluegrass \n(“What a Difference A Day Makes” and “Dust”) with Douglas always keeping the spotlight on the songs themselves. “That’s what I love about those guys\,” Douglas told me\, “they are just great songwriters.” \nGrowing up on a dairy farm in northern New York and then traveling around the world in a bluegrass band has given them a unique vantage point on life\, and the songs on “Darkest Hour” are a testament to that. “Jerry wanted to hear everything we’d written\,” Eric told me\, “so we just sent him songs: brand new songs\, old songs\, there’s stuff on that record 20 years old that we never recorded. We wanted to see what he would do with us as singer-songwriters. We respect him that much. Some of my favorite records are Jerry Douglas produced records. He didn’t disappoint.” \nIf the Gibson Brothers had stayed in Nashville in 1999 they might possibly be Grand Ole Opry members by now. At the very least they would be hit songwriters on Music Row. But\, just like their buddy Del McCoury\, they chose family over success (McCoury was in his 50s when he moved to Nashville and didn’t really see major success until he was approaching 60).All they need is someone to shine a light on them. Their talent level is well-established\, the only producers they have ever worked with are Ricky Skaggs\, Dan Auerbach\, David Ferguson and Jerry Douglas. I dare say not many musicians can stack up a list of producers that strong. For the Gibson Brothers though\, they just want to keep writing\, singing\, and standing on a stage.\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Allegheny is Ben Garnett on guitar\, Eli Gilbert on banjo\, Ellie Hakanson on fiddle\, and Tristan Scroggins on mandolin. The band is named for the Allegheny highlands of West Virginia where Raines grew up. This band is a significant nod to her deep traditional bluegrass roots. The music is traditional and hard-driving at its core but energized with Raines’ well-known penchant for originality and innovation.    \n“I grew up in West Virginia\, just a few miles from the historic C&O Canal\, the headwaters of the Potomac River\, and the Maryland and Pennsylvania state lines.  Geographically\, it was a pretty straight shot down ‘out of the hills’ to the Washington DC\, Baltimore\, and northern Virginia areas and my family would travel there as much as possible to hear all the incredible bluegrass that was being made there during the 60’s and the 70’s.  Washington\, D.C. was a hotbed of bluegrass (both traditional and progressive) at the time with bands like Bob Paisley & Ted Lundy\, Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals\, the Country Gentlemen\, and the Seldom Scene. SUMMARY:Viv & Riley at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:“Shines a light on the past without giving up its place in the present”~Rolling Stone Country \nViv & Riley’s sound is old-soul roots music to its core\, elegantly  combining a traditional backbone with the fresh iconic melodies of future-leaning indie-folk\, and the tightly wound vocal harmonies of the old-time and classic country music they came from. Although they grew up on opposite sides of the country\, Riley in Seattle\, Washington\, and Vivian in Lexington\, Virginia\, the two had an instant musical connection upon meeting in 2018. The pair has been collaborating since then\, honing their sound playing hundreds of shows across the US\, UK\, and Canada. Since 2018\, they’ve recorded and released multiple albums to critical acclaim from the likes of NPR Music\, Rolling Stone\, and No Depression\, and have garnered nearly six million streams on Spotify. A bittersweet nostalgia lies at the heart of Imaginary People\, the new album from Viv & Riley\, released September 15\, 2023 on Free Dirt Records. Over ten tracks\, the pair applies an indie roots sheen to newly composed pop gems. Rooted originally in the folk tradition\, the pair reframe the production into experimental territory\, crafting songs that speak to finding a path forward into adulthood in an uncertain world. The album brings a reflectiveness to summertime jams that speak of uninhibited joy and creative camaraderie.  \nBased out of Durham\, North Carolina\, they’ve tapped into the area’s eclectic and collaborative music scene\, recruiting Alex Bingham of Hiss Golden Messenger to produce the album. Bingham brings a sunny\, lush sound to Viv & Riley’s music\, moving beyond their earlier country roots and toward a layered sound and sonic experimentation. The songwriting has evolved as well\, from the world-weary\, stripped-down country songs they’re known for to indie songwriting at turns sweetly sad and gently sardonic. Ultimately\, Imaginary People is about carrying and honoring our pasts\, about letting that inform our new steps forward. This balancing act is familiar territory for Viv & Riley\, who also play in The Onlies\, an award winning old time stringband that Riley co-founded in Seattle at age 7. In that role\, they serve as co-artistic directors of The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. DESCRIPTION:“Ever since the death of legendary diva Cesária Évora in 2011\, the world has been waiting for another Cape Verdean singer with her sublime poise and emotional power. We may have just found her in Lucibela.” \n— NPR – All Things Considered NPR. \nBorn 1986 on the island of São Nicolau and singing ever since\, Lucibela’s assured\, warm voice is formed from years of assimilation of the sounds of morna and coladera. She began performing with a band while at the high school\, later going on to sing in hotels in Boa Vista\, entertaining tourists\, performing songs made famous by the great singers of Cabo Verde such as Cesária Évora\, Titina or Bana; songs that she knew by heart and made her own. In 2012\, she moved to Praia\, soon attracting attention in the city’s music venues\, finally making a breakthrough at the 2017 Atlantic Music Expo\, leading to invitations to Belgium and Lisbon\, where she recorded her debut album with producer Toy Vieira\, Cesária Évora’s musical director\, furthering her aim of carrying on the great diva’s legacy. \nThis program is presented with generous support from the Performing Arts Global Exchange grant at Mid Atlantic Art. \n			\n				Get Tickets\n			\n				Season Ticket Packages

DESCRIPTION:Can you measure and cut a piece of plywood? Prep and paint a wall or door? Refurbish a teak bench? Tell a weed from a flower? Cook a meal for 100? Stuff 250 Reunion packets? Change oil or fix a carburetor? Then Volunteer Work Project (VWP) is for you! \nVWP meets four times a year. College alumni and friends spend two to five days addressing top priorities to keep the College campus clean\, green and well-maintained. No task is too small or project too large. In exchange for our labor\, VWP provides happy hours and home-cooked meals. Volunteers may make arrangements at hotels or AirBnbs nearby or request assistance getting matched with local alumni with rooms available. The College houses VWP during the July work week. \nAll you need is a willing spirit\, a commitment to sustaining the College campus\, and a collaborative attitude. DESCRIPTION:Antiochiana Archivist Scott Sanders knows more about Antioch College than anyone else in the world. Scott has been at Antioch since 1994 and has lovingly stewarded the College’s collection of books\, artifacts\, and historical records for over 30 years. SUMMARY:Alice Gerrard at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:“Alice has a haunting and distinctive voice and she can do anything— holler\, shout\, belt it out\, swing a little\, croon a little\, and then flat-out break your heart.”  Lee Smith \nAlice Gerrard is a talent of legendary status.  In a career spanning more than 50 years\, Alice has known\, learned from\, and performed with many of the old-time and bluegrass greats and has in turn earned worldwide respect for her own important contributions to the music.  Known for her groundbreaking collaboration with Appalachian singer Hazel Dickens during the 1960s and ’70s\, the duo produced four classic Hazel and Alice LPs on Rounder and Smithsonian Folkways that  influenced scores of young women singers.  \nA tireless advocate of traditional music\, Alice has won numerous honors\, including an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Distinguished Achievement Award\, a Virginia Arts Commission Award\, the North Carolina Folklore Society’s Tommy Jarrell Award\, and an Indy Award. In 2017 Alice was inducted into the IBMA Hall of Fame along with Hazel Dickens. A film by Durham filmmaker Kenny Dalsheimer about her life and music You Gave Me a Song\, was shown at the Full Frame Festival in Durham\, NC\, at the Mill Valley Film Festival\, and several others.  In 2023 Alice finished her latest recording project\, Sun to Sun\, on the local Durham label\, Sleepy Cat Records. It features all original songs by Alice and one original instrumental by Reed Stutz\, who also plays on the recording\, along with Tatiana Hargreaves\,  Hasee Ciaccio\, DaShawn Hickman\, Gail Gillsepie\, Marcy Marxer\, Phil Cook\, Nick Falk\, and Joseph Dejarnette. \nNow 90\,  Alice is touring less but still performs and teaches in workshops. DESCRIPTION:John Doyle\, Cathie Ryan\, and Mick McAuley come together for a rare United States tour this December in An Irish Christmas. \nThis festive celebration brings three of Irish music’s most beloved performers to the stage in a program woven through with song and story – from cherished carols and traditional tunes and airs to newly composed songs for the season. \nMick McAuley\, renowned melodeon player and longtime collaborator of John Doyle\, co-wrote and recorded This Christmas Time\, a holiday album the two released in 2024. That recording is the heart and soul of An Irish Christmas\, and Mick is delighted to be bringing it to American audiences alongside two of his favorite musical partners. \nCathie Ryan is a natural fit for this holiday tour\, having carved out a reputation for her own beloved Christmas performances over the years. A highly regarded singer\, songwriter\, performer\, and educator\, Cathie is a towering presence in traditional music circles on both sides of the Atlantic. She and John have been musical collaborators for decades – he has played guitar and contributed arrangements to three of her studio recordings\, they have toured as a duo throughout Europe\, and together they have penned songs that have earned a permanent place in the Irish music repertoire. SUMMARY:Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy: "We Are Together Again" at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Bonnie “Prince” BillyWe Are Together Again \nHowever dimly we perceive it\, we are living through a change of worlds. The one we were born into is slipping away\, reshaped and denuded by human action. What remains is the question of what we will carry forward\, and the manner in which we refuse to surrender ourselves. Will Oldham’s new album\, We Are Together Again\, feels like an answer to these questions. In Oldham’s songs – and in the circle of others who’ve gathered beneath the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy on this endeavor – friendship\, community\, and the stubborn joy of making art with others become a means of persistence. This isn’t to say that the record is a denial of collapse\, which would be delusion\, so much as that models defiance by remaining fully human\, fully joyful\, in a world with a diminishing horizon… I’m talking about Oldham’s record\, to be sure\, but I think the answers he suggests in We Are Together Again speak to the only meaningful choices any of us can make at this point in all of the agonizing everything.  \nYou can hear it in “Life Is Scary Horses\,” when Oldham concedes\, “The human times have come and gone.  We must accept our rule is done\, though love is sown and will live on. Come to me\, let me see your eyes once more before the winter comes again.” The song modulates from minor to major in tone\, almost sunny. This could read as irony\, but to my ear it’s something closer to grace. That’s the spirit running through We Are Together Again: not denial\, but fragile endurance and thankfulness for the moments we have. \n“Friend Named Joe” and “Davey Dead” form the emotional heart of the record. In the former\, Oldham sings “And when it feels like life is just a series of delusions\, Joe can show that\, even though it all feels like illusion\, it’s real; and yesterday bears no resemblance to tomorrow. You fly towards death so full of life and love and joy and sorrow.” And in the latter\, “If you destroy a child’s perspective\, here’s what that child will do: be faced with unrelenting trial and render terror back at you.”  \nThe album begins and ends with “Why is the Lion” and “Bride of the Lion\,” which serve as thesis and conclusion\, offering an invocation that seems to float above the rest of the work: “Hope of something beginning to rise from the floor of the ring…is it my voice\, or\, better yet\, ours?” A melody cleaning the world\, “scouring the filth from the light.” That’s what the album sounds like: people trying\, not to fix anything\, but to keep the light clear long enough to recognize each other in it. \nThe feeling of community is earned honestly since We Are Together Again is as much as gathering as a record or a statement. The studio becomes a meeting ground\, a small republic of sound. Oldham’s friends\, colleagues and even family— including — Tory Fisher\, Lacey Guthrie\, Katie Peabody\, Catherine Irwin\, Sally Timms\, Maggie Halfman\, Nuala Kennedy\, Ned Oldham\, Thomas Deakin\, Jacob Duncan and Erin Hill  – lend their voices\, turning solitude into shared witness. \nA sense of human beauty runs through everything here. Each voice remains distinct\, yet folds into something larger. We Are Together Again doesn’t resolve fear; it meets it with harmony. It’s a record about the stubborn miracle of accompaniment. SUMMARY:Puuluup at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Puuluup was formed in 2014 by two talharpa enthusiasts Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson. Ramo Teder is a multi-instrumentalist and has been known for his long solo project Pastacas. He is also a looping pioneer in Estonia and has mastered these skills for twenty years already. Marko Veisson has a background in anthropology and his fieldwork in Northern Ghana as well as his love for West-African music have definitely influenced Puuluup’s style. \nThey play their own compositions on Talharpas – a traditional bowed lyre\, popular in Northern Europe since the early Middle Ages and played on Western Estonian islands until the beginning of 20th century. Puuluup directs the vibrations of Talharpa’s horsehair strings through effect blocks and looper\, uses alternative bowing and drumming techniques and sounds. The mellow sighs of talharpa are paired with electronically amplified echoes\, knocks\, creaks and crackles\, while still maintaining the instrument’s natural sound. \nThey play with music as they play with words\, sometimes creating their own language. As the band states: “We draw inspiration from Vormsi nights\, trams in November\, junkies in love\, criminals from Odessa and Antonio Vivaldi”. As a side dish\, when giving live concerts they also offer choreographic flittering which emerged on its own during the numerous days these two man spent in the rehearsal rooms. Their humor and warm charisma flows generously from the stage\, drawing the audience in. \nBecause of their unique approach to this traditional instrument Puuluup received several music awards in Estonia including the best Band\, the best Ensemble\, for the best Album. Their popularity in Estonia and abroad is rapidly growing. The band performed in Canada\, USA\, China\, Chile\, France\, Germany\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, Portugal\, Macedonia\, Hungary\, Slovenia\, Ukraine\, Taiwan among others. \nLineup:Ramo Teder – talharpa\, vocal\, looper and effects pedalsMarko Veisson – talharpa\, vocal\, effects pedal board \nPuuluup about themselves:Two men in midlife crisis who have decided to start living rock & roll lifestyle with the help of their instruments\, talharpas. \nWhat inspires them:All kinds of random sources of inspiration are similarly important for their music – unexpected excerpts from Polish TV series\, old Estonian punk\, klezmer\, African gospel\, Sahel music\, hip-hop\, Antonio Vivaldi even R&B\, even windmills and wires forgotten in the car… \nWho inspires them:Buena Vista Social Club – they make them feel still rather young and give hope that they have a long career ahead. \nTheir performance:The lyrics are to set the mood. Mostly they are rather abstract and are open to different interpretations. DESCRIPTION:From Andalusia to New York and beyond\, Antonio Lizana is one of the most celebrated representatives of new Flamenco Jazz to come out of southern Spain. As a jazz saxophonist\, flamenco singer and composer\, Lizana’s live shows are described as a “breathtaking journey from flamenco roots to contemporary jazz”\, bound together by soulful lyrics that carry messages of optimism and sincerity straight to the heart of his audiences. \nAntonio Lizana has performed in more than 30 countries with his band\, playing in festivals such as Womex\, Etnosur\, SXSW Austin\, the London\, New York\, Los Angeles and San Francisco Flamenco Festivals\, Barcelona Voll Damn\, Shanghai Jazz Fest (China)\, Casablanca Jazz Fest (Morocco) and Flamenco Biennale (Holland). \nBorn and raised in San Fernando\, a province of Cádiz and one of the cradles of flamenco singing\, his collaborations with countless local artists have informed his technique and style\, and allowed him to go on to share the authentic flamenco spirit with the world.
