SUMMARY:The Yellow Springs Speaker Series presents New York Times Best Selling Author Beth Macy at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n \n Season Ticket Packages\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nThe Yellow Springs Speaker Series produced by Mad River Theater Works with support from the Yellow Springs Community Foundation and the Yellow Springs Library Association is proud to present Beth Macy in conversation with WYSO host Vick Mickunas.  We hope you can join us! \nBeth Macy is a Virginia-based journalist who writes about outsiders and underdogs. Raised in a small Ohio town\, she was the first in her family to go to college\, an event that drastically changed (and maybe even saved) her life. Having delivered newspapers as a child\, she spent most of her career writing for them. As her industry imploded\, Macy switched to book-writing at the age of fifty\, becoming the award-winning author of three New York Times-bestselling books examining communities left behind by corporate greed and political indifference. Her first book\, Factory Man\, explored the aftermath of globalization on rural communities and won a J. Anthony Lukas Prize. Dopesick\, her investigation of the opioid crisis\, was short-listed for the Carnegie Medal\, won the L.A. Times Book Prize for Science and Technology\, and was described as a “masterwork of narrative nonfiction” by The New York Times. Dopesick was made into a Peabody- and Emmy Award-winning Hulu series on which Macy served as an executive producer and cowriter. \nA Guggenheim Fellow and a Nieman Fellow for Journalism at Harvard\, Macy has also written for The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Atlantic\, and The New Yorker. Her most recently published book\, Paper Girl: A Memoir of Home and Family in a Fractured America\, is a combination memoir and reported analysis of the rural-urban divide told through the lenses of backward mobility\, political polarization\, and the decimation of local news.  \n  \n\n \n Get Tickets\n \n Season Ticket Packages

SUMMARY:Antioch History with Scott Sanders
DESCRIPTION:Antiochiana Archivist Scott Sanders knows more about Antioch College than anyone else in the world. Scott has been at Antioch since 1994 and has lovingly stewarded the College’s collection of books\, artifacts\, and historical records for over 30 years. Here’s your chance to hear him talk about the interesting and entertaining history of Antioch! \nThis monthly series of one hour presentations will be held both in-person at the Olive Kettering Library and virtually via Zoom. Presentations are free and open to the public. There will be time for Q&A after each presentation. These sessions will be recorded and posted on Antioch’s YouTube channel. \nPresentations are from 12:30 – 1:30 pm in the Olive Kettering Library. \nOr you can join virtually via Zoom. Presentations will be shared on Antioch’s Facebook channel afterwards. \n\nScheduleMarch 11: 150 Years of Antioch in 60 Minutes or Less: A general overview of Antioch College history from the 1850s to the 2000s. \nApril 8: Fact and Fiction of Antioch College: An attempt to dispel three seemingly impossible-to-dispel myths about the College. \nMay 13: Red\, Russians\, and Spies: Two former professors who used Antioch as a haven from dangerous Russian and Communist spies; one for real\, and the other maybe in his head. \nJune 10: Why So Many Damn Colleges in Ohio: An attempt to explain the reason for the establishment of over eighty small colleges in the great state of Ohio. \nJuly 8: Antioch and The Civil War: A history of Antioch College during the central event in American history\, the US Civil War\, including exploits and experiences of Antiochians who served in the conflict. \nAugust 12: The Devil and Daniel Ellsberg or How Scott Got Fired: A brief history of Antiochiana and a harrowing personal account of Scott’s experiences with Antioch University. \nSeptember 9: The Life of Hugh Taylor Birch: The improbable rags to riches story of a dropout from the 1860s who gave Antioch College a glen (and so much more) and has a dormitory named in his honor. \nOctober 14: Women of the Glen: The lives of three women associated with the College’s former nature preserve: a scientist\, an art collector\, and a sculptor. \nNovember 11: My Hero Horace Mann: A biographical picture show about Antioch College’s first president.

SUMMARY:The World House Choir Presents “Study War No More” at the Foundry Theater
DESCRIPTION:The World House Choir Presents “Study War No More” \nNovember 13\, 14\, and 15\, 2026 \nThe World House Choir will be joining forces with James Johnston and the YS Community Chorus and Orchestra to perform Ralph Vaughn Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem” [Grant Us Peace] one of the most moving and powerful choral works ever written. Composed on the eve of World War II\, this dramatic 40-minute cantata weaves together the words of Walt Whitman\, the Old Testament\, and the Latin Mass to create an urgent plea for peace in a world torn apart by war. Its message is as timely and compelling today as when it was first performed. \n \n Season Ticket Packages

DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n \n Season Ticket Packages\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “Alice has a haunting and distinctive voice and she can do anything— holler\, shout\, belt it out\, swing a little\, croon a little\, and then flat-out break your heart.” Lee Smith \nAlice Gerrard is a talent of legendary status. In a career spanning more than 50 years\, Alice has known\, learned from\, and performed with many of the old-time and bluegrass greats and has in turn earned worldwide respect for her own important contributions to the music. Known for her groundbreaking collaboration with Appalachian singer Hazel Dickens during the 1960s and ’70s\, the duo produced four classic Hazel and Alice LPs on Rounder and Smithsonian Folkways that influenced scores of young women singers. \nA tireless advocate of traditional music\, Alice has won numerous honors\, including an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Distinguished Achievement Award\, a Virginia Arts Commission Award\, the North Carolina Folklore Society’s Tommy Jarrell Award\, and an Indy Award. In 2017 Alice was inducted into the IBMA Hall of Fame along with Hazel Dickens. A film by Durham filmmaker Kenny Dalsheimer about her life and music You Gave Me a Song\, was shown at the Full Frame Festival in Durham\, NC\, at the Mill Valley Film Festival\, and several others. In 2023 Alice finished her latest recording project\, Sun to Sun\, on the local Durham label\, Sleepy Cat Records. It features all original songs by Alice and one original instrumental by Reed Stutz\, who also plays on the recording\, along with Tatiana Hargreaves\, Hasee Ciaccio\, DaShawn Hickman\, Gail Gillsepie\, Marcy Marxer\, Phil Cook\, Nick Falk\, and Joseph Dejarnette. \nNow 90\, Alice is touring less but still performs and teaches in workshops. As she noted on the back cover of her latest recording: “In the dark of the night I think sometimes about how this might be my final recording\, my final mattress\, my final car\, my final dog—but then you never know….” \nThe Foundry is overjoyed to welcome this esteemed Antioch College alumni (1958) back to campus for this special concert.  Additional events are being scheduled around Alice’s return visit to the village which will be announced soon.  \n \n Get Tickets\n \n Season Ticket Packages
