Essential Responsibilities of the Position:
Oral History in the Liberal Arts is a program of the Great Lakes Colleges Association and the Global Liberal Arts Alliance that supports oral history projects as a mode of community-based learning. Founded and operating off Antioch College’s campus under the leadership of Brooke Bryan, OHLA stewards funding to collaborative projects, offers training workshops and institutes, and provides technological support and pedagogical resources to projects seeking to develop digital exhibits. OHLA publishes Faculty digital exhibits and Student digital exhibits that feature long-form interviews in a tool called the Oral History Metadata Synchronizer (OHMS). This tool allows the researcher to make collections of long-form oral history narratives searchable. This position will become familiar with the 62 projects that OHLA has funded with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and will work to thematize and make the interview collections not yet published accessible in the OHLA digital repository. This position entails working with WordPress, OHMS, and other digital tools from the digital humanities, and will likely involve communications with digital librarians across GLCA. The OHLA Research Assistant(s) will work virtually in close communication with Brooke Bryan to (1) better curate the digital exhibits on ohla.info by theme, to (2) help communicate with project teams with outstanding benchmarks for their funded projects, and to (3) to index and thematize individual long-form interviews into digital exhibits published online. This involves a lot of time spent listening, typing, and using critical and synthetic thinking to summarize and thematize the thoughts offered by interviewees in interviews. Some projects will have an Antioch focus.
Qualifications:
Possible interviewing, possible web development, possible tutorial creation and public-facing writing, possible public speaking. Possible podcast development or interfacing with anti-watt. Student should be interested in oral history or long-form interview, the digital humanities, digital library studies, archival studies, and programming and code. Students must demonstrate a commitment to the ethical treatment fo other people’s words and sentiment, and strive to amplify the ideas shared in long-form interviews through attention to detail in the research summaries. Preferred skills include proficiency with digital tools, especially audio and video files, and an ability to type and create polished summaries as public-facing scholarship.

Able to sit for prolonged periods of time
Able to focus on computer tasks for prolonged periods of time
Movement within and across a historic residential campus
Environmental Considerations:
This position involves remote work at a computer, and the ability to stream audio and video for lengthy periods of time (bandwidth and headphones).
