In observance of the Juneteenth Holiday, Antioch College Offices will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. As we spend the day reflecting on the end of slavery in the United States, several opportunities to gather as a community are taking place.

 

Yellow Springs Community Juneteenth Celebration: Saturday, June 15

 

  • 10:00 a.m –  Gather in front of the Olive Kettering Library at Antioch College
  • 10:30 a.m. – Begin Juneteenth historic walk.
  • 11:15 a.m. –  Arrive at Mills Lawn grounds at S. Walnut Street north of Limestone Street. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.
  • 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Juneteenth Program. Musical performances, Juneteenth history, readings from WPA Slave Narratives & more.
  • 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Juneteenth Lunch. Local chef Locksley Orr will provide a meal inspired by Black food traditions.
  • 1:00 p.m. –2:30 p.m. – DJ Basim will provide toe-tapping, booty-shaking, classic and new music.
  • 2:00 p.m. – Free Movie. The 2004 “Ray” starring Jamie Fox in the biopic of the life of Ray Charles will be screened at the Little Art Theater, 247 Xenia Ave

 

Rest, Resistance, and Restoration at the Coretta Scott King Center: Wednesday, June 19

 

Join us from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for an attended rest event at the Coretta Scott King center that is inspired by the work of Tricia Hersey and the Nap Ministry, Rest, Resistance and Restoration: A Juneteenth Celebration.
Come to the center and take a nap, drink tea, and read liberatory Black Queer literature. You can RSVP for this free event here: 
Here is the schedule of events:
  • Rest: Come to the CSKC and rest your body as an act of resistance. Bring your yoga mats, blankets and pillows. Times: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.  and 3:00 – 4:00 p.m
  • Resistance: Liberatory Black Queer Literature Read-in: Bring a piece of literature by your favorite Black Queer author to read quietly as you sip tea and relax. We will have some literature that you can read also. Time: 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
  • Restoration: Yoga/ Pilates Fusion Workshop with Maaliyau Amirie: Join Maaliyau Amirie for a restorative workshop that is sure to have you feeling amazing. Time: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
