Welcome Queen Meccasia Zabriskie to the Antioch College community!

We are thrilled to introduce Queen Meccasia Zabriskie, Visiting Associate Professor of Social Sciences and Resident Fellow of the Coretta Scott King Center, who is joining us for the 2023-24 academic year.

Queen brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our campus, and we couldn't be more excited about the incredible opportunities she will offer our students. Her scholarship delves into the realms of race, performance, and Africanicity, and she is deeply committed to community engagement.

This fall, you can catch her teaching two captivating courses:

SSC 270-01: A special course on community-based projects at the
CSKC, where students will have the chance to make a real impact in the community.

SSC 270-01: A special course on the sociology of arts and performance in the Foundry Theater, exploring the power of creativity and expression.

In Queen's own words about joining Antioch College:

"I am excited to join the Antioch community for a year as a visiting scholar in social sciences and resident fellow in the Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom because it will allow me to contribute to an institution that has a legacy of cultivating a commitment to innovative and critical thinking, collective work and responsibility, and freedom and social justice. I am excited about Antioch’s student-centered, collaborative educational model that values experiential learning, community engagement, collective problem-solving, and working towards positive social change."

Queen is ready to share her knowledge and experience while learning from the Antioch and Yellow Springs communities. She is particularly excited about the opportunity to collaboratively develop a campus engagement project through the Center that aligns with President Fernandes's bold vision for the college.

Welcoming the Newest Additions to Our Campus Community! 🎉 Last week, we had the incredible honor of extending a warm welcome to 45 fresh faces from across the U.S. These bright minds have chosen to join our vibrant and close-knit community, adding their unique stories to the tapestry of our campus. Here's to the exciting journey ahead and the memories we'll create together!

Antioch College is proud to have implemented a vibrant and successful Permaculture Design Certificate Course in collaboration with the Cincinnati Permaculture Institute (CPI) in July 2023. Held on the Antioch College Farm, the program offered students and community members a unique opportunity to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in sustainable farming practices and community-centered agriculture over the course of three intensive weekends.

Themes included soil rejuvenation, succession planting, seed preservation, mushroom cultivation, eco-friendly building, and food forests. Balancing theory and hands-on activities, participants designed educational gardens, farms, and homesteads. The practical application of permaculture principles empowered participants to envision and contribute to a more sustainable future. Feedback from program participants echoed the sentiment that the course struck an outstanding balance between theory and practice.

We're excited to congratulate Samantha Benac '17 who recently received her Master of Social Work from The Ohio State University. At Antioch, Samantha designed her own major in Intersectional Feminisms in Theory and Praxis. Samantha is starting a position at Equitas Health as a Mental Health Therapist! #winningvictoriesforhumanity

This week we welcomed 14 passionate faculty members to the Oral History in the Liberal Arts (OHLA) Institute! From near and far, they came together on our beautiful campus, some traveling from as far as Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Ivory Coast, while others joined us from right here in Ohio.

The OHLA Institute, part of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance, is an opportunity for undergraduate-focused research, community-engaged teaching, and learning through oral history and digital scholarship. We are thrilled to be part of this remarkable initiative that supports digital projects across the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) and the Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA).

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Eric Miller, Luisa Bieri, Brooke Blackmon Bryan, and all others involved in making this Institute a resounding success!

During the five-day workshop at Antioch College, leaders have been engaging in the best practices of oral history methodology in higher education. They'll learn tactical strategies for interviewing and how to effectively teach those techniques. Additionally, they'll be introduced to digital tools for exhibit building and pedagogical frameworks that support community-based research.

Empowering educators with these valuable resources will enrich the academic experience for students and foster meaningful connections within communities. Through faculty-student research and Globally Connected Courses, we envision a future where oral history becomes a powerful tool for positive change and a deeper understanding of our shared humanity.
