Shelby Chestnut HeadshotA Message from Shelby Chestnut, Board Chair

Twenty years ago I started the journey you are embarking on and found Antioch College. I was coming from a mid-western city with a single-mother affirming family who had little to no means to help me pay for college and Antioch not only took into account my family’s financial situation, but also welcomed me as an LGBTQ student of color. Today, I am the chair of the Antioch College Board of Trustees and have the privilege of leading work for the country’s largest transgender non-profit. I’m an LGBTQ community organizer and policy advocate with over a decade of experience working within racialized LGBTQ communities. None of this would have been possible had I not attended Antioch College.

Our most recent student survey indicated that 82% of our students identify as LGBTQ and 16% identify as transgender. To me these numbers are critical to share with people deciding if Antioch College is the right next step for their education. In a time where civil rights are greatly debated and attacked, Antioch College remains steadfast in our commitment to create a safe and affirming self directed learning environment. We encourage LGBTQ people to join our community at Antioch as we engage in this critical fight.
