Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Residence Life and Student Services serves as the primary staff resource for residential student experience and support to foster student success, retention, and persistence in a small college environment. The Assistant Director oversees the day-to-day operation of the Residence Life program, supervises the Resident Assistant staff, manages the Residence Life budget, and supports the College’s and the division’s diversity goals and objectives. The Assistant Director responds constructively to a wide range of student concerns, all of which contribute to student success and conditions for learning. The assistant director works collaboratively within the student affairs department and with other campus partners to proactively engage in building an inclusive living and learning community. There is potential for the assistant director to have a collateral assignments designated by the dean of students as determined by campus need. This full-time, live-on position reports to the Dean of Students and Community Life.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Residence Life

  • Primary responsibility to proactively engage in building an inclusive living and learning community experience and work collaboratively with campus partners to foster a positive living environment in the residence halls and other student living units across campus.
  • Managing College housing and residence life operations including assignments, keys, inspections, etc. and coordinating with other campus departments for scheduling, billing, and facility needs
  • Managing the Residence Life budget to ensure delivery of activities and services that assist students in their transition to college
  • Facilitating development and delivery of effective programming for students to address learning outcomes and promote persistence and support the divisional and institutional goals around student experience and retention.
  • Updating and maintaining residence life policies and procedures and educating residential and campus communities to promote respect and adherence to policies; including students and other campus stakeholder in proposed updates and revisions.
  • Evaluating occupancy, retention, projections and trends within housing on a quarterly basis, reporting out to the Dean of Students and other campus offices, as needed.

Student Affairs and Community Life

  • Collaborating with Academic and Student Affairs colleagues to provide holistic support for students from diverse backgrounds including but not limited to gender identities, sexual orientations, socio-economic statuses, cultural backgrounds, racial identities, ethnic identities, abilities, and religious backgrounds
  • Coordinating and managing student support services such as shuttle transportation for break periods, shopping shuttle offerings, and housing and food needs between terms; fostering community and campus relationships to support these endeavors.
  • Responsible for understanding, upholding and enforcing college and residence life policies and serving as hearing officer within the student conduct process for low level violations.
  • Participating in the Student Affairs on-call duty rotation and responding to crisis situations as needed.
  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student employees including Resident Assistants and department student workers.
  • Mediating student conflict, assisting community in developing nuanced approaches to conflict, and facilitating difficult conversations within the campus community

General Responsibilities

  • Assisting with student records management through maintaining the security and integrity of student records, adhering to FERPA laws and policies, and ensuring accurate student record retention.
  • Assisting with co-curricular assessment efforts, including maintaining data and reports on student support services.
  • Prioritizing and managing multiple competing projects in an effective and timely way
  • Utilizing grounded approaches of student developmental theory and/or philosophies to working with students
  • Participate in departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings and committees as needed.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, or related field
  • Minimum of two years’ experience providing leadership in residence life/campus housing
  • Minimum of one year’s experience supervising student staff members
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developmental and social issues experienced by college students;
  • Demonstrated cultural competence within a higher education setting and commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience with crisis intervention and ability to de-escalate conflicts; Experience responding to and managing emergency situations as part of an on-call structure preferred
  • Experience with budget management;
  • Proven knowledge of relevant current laws, regulations, policies, and guidance around higher education housing and student services (e.g. ADA, Section 504, FHA, FERPA, HEA, Title VI, VII, and IX, etc.) and understanding of relevant compliance record keeping and reporting requirements.
  • Proficiency with using Microsoft Office software as well as Google Suite, and a willingness to update skills on an ongoing basis.
  • Experience in managing projects and tasks independently; ability to manage competing timelines preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills across formats (in person, in writing, by phone/virtual meeting, etc.).
  • Excellent presentation skills and a proven ability to create professional, accurate reports and documents.
  • Must possess the ability to accurately assess students in distress and crisis situations and provide sensitive, professional service in a calm and timely manner.
  • Must possess the ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • Must be able to occasionally work evenings and weekends based upon student success and college-wide programming and events (i.e. first-year experience workshops and events, new student orientation, visitation days, commencement, etc.).

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must be able to navigate a variety of terrain, including stairs and rough uneven ground.
  • Must be able to use computer and phone.
  • Must be able to drive and have reliable transportation for both regular work hours and on call needs.
  • Must be available for on-call duty rotation with Student Affairs team.
  • This is a live-on position (housing in a staff apartment will be provided).
