About Speaker Emmett Schelling
During a year in which hundreds of bills targeting LGBTQ+ people — particularly transgender youth — have been introduced in state legislatures nationwide, TIME Magazine recognized Emmett Schelling, executive director of the Transgender Education Network of Texas (TENT), as one of 2022’s most noteworthy “pioneers”.
In Texas alone, where the state legislature introduced close to 80 bills targeting transgender youth in 2021 — triple the number of any other state, “Emmett, himself a father and a trans man, again mobilized the entire state to fight back,” wrote Chase Strangio, deputy director for transgender justice with the ACLU, in his entry on Emmett.
In a recent statement, Schelling said, “Amid an unprecedented level of intentional cruelty from politicians who should be working to expand rights for all Texans, the trans community has continued to show resilience and fight for justice. We are in a critical moment in this country where people from all different backgrounds and communities are pleading to exist without being harmed, so my hope is that we can unite together to build a better, more inclusive, and healthier future for every Texan.”
As Antiochians, we own our education, live experientially, and act for justice. Emmett Schelling’s remarkable work serves as inspiration to our graduating seniors as they embark upon the rest of their lives.
Student Speakers
Asher Ruck is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology and Community Studies, with a focus in Transnational and Global Engagement. They are interested in life narratives through biography, memoirs, ethnography, and creative nonfiction. As a community member at Antioch, they have been involved in ComCil, serving as a student representative and as a chair. In their free time, Asher is a fan of music, video games, and taking care of their dog. After graduation, they will be continuing their time at Antioch, in a new role as a staff member, as they join the student affairs team as an administrative support specialist.
Delaney Schlesinger-Devlin is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in the Psychology of Social Behavior with a focus in French Language and Culture. They are interested in the many ways in which empathy can be developed in individuals that allows them to change their perspective in meaningful and constructive ways. In addition, they are interested in how books can expand the understanding of the world around readers and allow them to learn as well as be entertained. In their free time they work on Community Council, enjoy printmaking and reading any and all books. They plan to pursue a Master’s in Social Work at the University of Illinois.

Getting to Antioch College
The most convenient airport to Yellow Springs is the Dayton International Airport, which is 25 miles away. The Columbus Airport is roughly 60 miles away.
- Take exit 52A off Interstate 70 and head south on Route 68 toward Xenia and Yellow Springs. About seven miles down the road, you will enter Yellow Springs. Route 68 then becomes Xenia Avenue, the main street through Yellow Springs.
- Proceed through downtown Yellow Springs and turn left at Center College St.
- Center College St. will dead end at Livermore St. and you will see the College campus. Parking is available along Livermore and in other designated areas on campus.
