Visiting Assistant Professor of Media Arts, Catalina Alvarez, will be exhibiting her work in August in New York in a series at Maria Hernández Park and Starrbar in Brooklyn and then in a solo exhibition at Flux Factory in Long Island City. Details of those events are below:
- r e g i o n (e s) is a free “radical new art series using the power of performance to explore complicated topics like community and Latin American identity.” The series will run from August 3rd through August 8th at Maria Hernández Park and Starrbar in Brooklyn. Catalina’s short film, MUÑE, will screen on August 3, 4, 6 and 8 in a program of short films at Starrbar. She’ll do a Q&A on the 8th after the 7:30 PM screening (If you attend on another date, please check the schedule for times as they vary).

JARGON is Catalina’s solo exhibition of word drawings at Flux Factory in Long Island City, August 9th, 10th and 11th, 1-6 PM. There will be a salon with Colombian coffee on Saturday the 10th from 1 to 4 PM. The main trait that distinguishes JARGON from other language is specialized vocabulary.
There are also screenings of Catalina’s short MUÑE in August at the San Diego Underground Film Festival (August 22) and the Cindependent Film Festival (Cincinnati, OH, August 31).
She will be an artist in residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in November and December 2019. Past residents include Cy Twombly, Naomi Wolf, and Alice McDermott.
Catalina has been invited by the Wexner Center for the Arts Film/Video Studio residency program to work on her Yellow Springs documentary (untitled) in spring of 2020. Other artists who have been invited to work in the Studio include Barbara Hammer, Kelly Reichardt, Tom Kalin, Sadie Benning, Barbara Kruger, Deborah Stratman, and William Wegman.
“I also am thrilled to have received a $1,500 Antioch Faculty Fund award to hire an assistant editor for the same film,” Catalina reports. “Through Antioch College’s fiscal sponsorship of the project earlier in the year, I was able to get a $5,000 Yellow Springs Community Foundation grant for the production of the film. Matt Morgan, who is a producer of the film, generously lent us a RED 8k camera for the filming.” Students in her spring courses learned how to operate the camera and had the opportunity to film with it.
This summer, Catalina has been an artist in residence at Flux Factory, where Antioch Student Colby Nelson-Betz did his Spring Co-op.
