Murray T. Smith, age 72, passed away on November 17, 2019 at Baystate Medical Center in Holyoke, Massachusetts, after a short battle with cancer.
Murray was born on March 6, 1947 in Washington, D.C. to C.Tynan and Bonnie Smith. After graduating from High School in Alexandria, Virginia, he matriculated to Antioch College in 1965. Murray left Antioch prior to earning his degree and went to work for Village Ford in Yellow Springs.
He was drafted into the US Army in 1970 and married fellow Antiochian, Carolyn Berley (Class of 1969) in December of 1970.
In 1971, he was sent to Germany where Carolyn joined him and where their first child was born in 1972. After returning to the US, Murray completed his BA degree from Antioch College in 1974 and his MBA from Wright State University in 1975.
Murray worked in accounting for the Dayton Power and Light Company from 1975 to 1980. He then went to work as Treasurer and later Vice President for the Antioch Publishing Company. In 1989, he and Carolyn divorced, and in 1993 he moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts, to work for the Springfield Heritage Company.
He married Barbara Lamirande in 1994 and went to work for Mass Mutual Insurance Company until his retirement. Murray loved working with his hands, old cars, other various creative pursuits and was an avid traveler.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, children Joshua Smith (Lisa Varandani) of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Jennifer Smith of Washington, D.C., step-children Michael Lamirande (Kathy) of Philadelphia and Adam Lamirande (Renee) of Holyoke, brother Dwight Smith (Andrea) of Merchantville, NJ, former wife Carolyn (Curt Nelson) of Xenia, Ohio, and three grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
