In honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we have created a list of social distancing ways to Celebrate Earth week 2020 at Home!
- Jennifer Knickerbocker, Anishinaabe Leader, will be participating in an event organized by Price Institute on 4/23/2020 called The Indigenous Just Transition. This is a live event hosted on Facebook which addresses a number of questions, such as: Is the current pandemic a “dress rehearsal” for the cascading impacts of global warming? What lessons can we learn now to respond much better? How does each disaster illustrate the growing inequalities of US society? For more information, follow this link to the Price Institute Facebook event.
- Hundreds of youth organizers, climate justice activists, and frontline communities will be hosting live streams with music, lectures, workshops, connections, etc. from April 22 – 24 for Earth Day Live 2020. Head to their website to check out the full schedule.
- Go for a bike ride, enjoy the fresh air and your surroundings while practicing social distancing recommendations.
- Go for a hike or visit a local open park.
- Take a tour of Yosemite, Yellowstone, or another one of the world’s most incredible national parks.
- Now that the weather is warming up, you’ll be able to hang your clothes out to dry outside rather than using a dryer – saves on your energy bill too!
- Grow your own fruits and veggies by planting your own garden. This is a great way to stay active and to keep a little busy.
- Try out some new vegan/plant-based meal recipes. The minimalist vegan has a number of good recipes, and so does Cookie + Kate. Eat well! Treat yo self!
- Relax to some jams put together by Randy Reiss ’94 featuring 80 hours worth of songs played at Antioch dances.
- Collect rainwater and use it to water your plants and garden.
- Do you have any clothing items that are worn or need darning? Rather than throw them out, you could consider sending them to Hood River’s Renewal Workshop – a company that cleans and fixed clothes that have been returned to them. Or you could also try fixing them up yourself!
- Act on plastic pollution by switching to reusable bees wrap instead of using plastic wrap, or consider other alternatives to using plastic.
- You could also use shampoo bars instead of shampoo that comes in plastic bottles. Or if you do want to continue using their favorite shampoo, consider buying in bulk and refilling your smaller bottle as you go along.
- Pick up litter on your daily jog or rollerblade adventure – Earth Day: Great Global Solo Cleanup.
- Download the EC2020 App to measure the air quality around you, and send this data through to scientists.
- Create artworks for the earth! Use your art to heighten awareness, increase the environment’s relevance in our everyday lives, mobilize action, and illuminate the path forward for our planet.
- Take the pesticide pledge and help protect the bees!
- Let us know what your hope is by sharing a picture of you interacting with nature, using #HopeForEarth and #AntiochEarthWeek2020, and tagging @earthdaynetwork.
- Recently proposed revisions by the EPA are threatening The Endangered Species Act which has conserved some of our nation’s most iconic species since 1973. Take action by signing this petition.
- NASA has been celebrating #EarthDayAtHome all month and will have lots of content springing up across its site and social media channels. They are even hosting special “NASA Science Live” broadcasts on YouTube here.
- Visit a National Park from anywhere in the world! You can stay connected to parks through digital experiences, virtual tours, webcams, games and other activities. Head to the National Park Service website to check out the possibilities.
- Zoos and aquariums are also hosting virtual Earth Day events. The San Diego Zoo has events planned for the entire day.
- If you are located in Columbus, mygreenspot is handing out free wildflower packets to community members!
