Darla Newman, died Sunday, in Fayetteville, Ark. She was 72. Darla was born on July 20, 1949, in Dodge City, Kansas, to William L. and Edith Chasin Long, the third of three children. When she was seven, the family moved to Whittier, California, where she attended public schools. She majored in chemistry at Antioch College in Ohio, and at graduation in 1971 went to work for Polaroid Corporation in Massachusetts. After a couple of years, her interests took a turn, and she studied law at Boston University. In 1976, she interned for the Massachusetts Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women. She then moved to the Los Angeles area to practice family law. In 1978, she married Donald Rimes; they divorced in 1983. In 1985 she married John Newman and in 1988 they moved to Fayetteville, where she resided until her death.
Darla proactively practiced family law, including several years with Legal Aid. She, along with John, were annual participants in Jewish Renewal summer workshops, and devoted time, energy, and finances to the founding and support of Fayetteville’s Temple Shalom. She served several years on its board of directors, holding officer positions, including President and Treasurer. Her other interests included music, dancing, and hosting large meals for family and friends.
Darla is survived by two sons, Sean Rimes (Carrie) of Ashland, Oregon, and Jacob Newman of Brooklyn, New York, one daughter, Jennie Newman (Amanda) of Richmond, Indiana, and one step-daughter, Apple Rice (Andrew), of Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, six grandchildren, a brother, Bruce Long (Irina) of Mesa, Arizona, and a sister, Lynda Korsan (Robert) of Walnut Creek, California.
