Alan Roger Smith, class of 1949, died in his home in El Cerrito, California, just a few weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. From 1953 until a year before his death, he worked as a research physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, specializing in the detection of ultra-low levels of radiation.
Among many projects, he worked as a NASA consultant, in Superfund analysis and cleanup and the detection of underground nuclear testing in China, and, more recently, North Korea, as well as conducting research in California on a highly promising method of earthquake prediction, and the search for neutrinos.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia S. Smith ’52 (nee Patricia Louise Smith), also an Antioch graduate, and his son, Karl.
