Portraits and Dreams, co-directed by Wendy Ewald ’74, will premiere on PBS on September 7, 2020. A companion book will be published by MACK Books.
Portraits and Dreams, “revisits photographs created by Kentucky schoolchildren in the 1970s and the place where the photos were made. The film is about the students, their work as visionary photographers, and the lives they have led since then, as well as the linkages of personal memory to the passage of time.”

Wendy Ewald was born in Detroit, MI, and gained her BA in Art from Antioch College in 1974. She also studied photography with Minor White at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ewald is renowned for her collaborative work which merges photography, activism, and education and challenges prevailing ideas of authorship. Ewald’s photography has been exhibited widely and is held in collections including the Detroit Art Institute, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress. Ewald has spent more than forty years collaborating with children, families, and teachers in the United States, Labrador, Colombia, India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Mexico, and Tanzania. She was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship in 1992 and works as a senior research associate at the Duke University Center for International Studies.
