Dr. Wahji (Sanders) Kasten ’02 has been announced as one of this year’s Bloomberg Fellows by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Kasten has been awarded a full scholarship for training to address addiction and overdose supported by her employer Klallam Counseling Services, Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, located in Port Angeles, WA. Dr. Kasten is also the founder and lead physician at First Star Natural Medicine in Portland, OR. She is a primary care provider and believes patient empowerment is vital to the healing process. She works with people on individualized treatment plans to improve their overall wellness.

Dr. Kasten is a First Nations Native Canadian, originally from Saskatchewan, Canada. She received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Antioch College and graduated from the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) in 2015 with a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine and a Masters in Acupuncture.

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative’s Fellows program provides world-class public health training to tackle critical health issues across the country. The 2021 Bloomberg Fellows includes 58 fellows who work for organizations focusing on one of five critical health challenges facing the United States: addiction and overdose, adolescent health, environmental challenges, obesity and the food system, and violence.
