Current Situation:
Repair parts for the failed backup boiler (an inducer motor and drive control board) were confirmed to have shipped from Canada. At this time, we do not yet have an estimated delivery date, though arrival is still hoped for later this week.
Building Status and Impacts:
Wellness Center: The Wellness Center will remain closed through the end of the week. The spa has been drained, and staff continue to monitor and chemically treat the pool to maintain water quality and enable faster restoration once heat is fully restored. Even if the parts arrive this week, the center will remain closed while repairs are made. Based on the current timeline, we are cautiously anticipating a possible reopening of the Wellness Center on Sunday, February 8, or Monday, February 9.
Foundry Theater: The Foundry will remain closed for the duration of this week. During the extreme cold, the Foundry Theater experienced two separate breaks in its geothermal heating circulation loop when ice broke joints connecting radiators to the piping. This caused flooding in the Experimental Theater and the Atrium. Isolation valves in the geothermal heating circulation loop successfully contained the leaks. The full extent of water damage and required repairs will be assessed once heat is restored. Space heaters are currently being used to reduce the risk of further freeze damage, particularly in the Experimental Theater.
ASB: ASB remains closed except for essential educational activities that cannot be relocated. Last Friday, class was successfully held in the ASB Media Lab using space heaters, and this approach is planned again for this week. Class was not able to be held in the ASB Sculpture Lab due to the size of the space and insufficient heating capacity. On Wednesday, class is planned to be held in the ASB Ecology Lab using space heaters. In the ASB fire pump room, a dripping leak was detected coming from the fire sprinkler system. Space heaters are being used to protect the fire sprinkler system from freezing.
Next Steps:
Once the boiler repairs are completed and heat is restored, Facilities staff will closely monitor all affected buildings for leaks caused by frozen pipes so that issues can be isolated and repaired quickly. Damage assessments and repairs will then begin in the Foundry and ASB.
We recognize the continued disruption this situation is causing and appreciate your patience, flexibility, and resilience as Facilities staff work to restore heat and stabilize our buildings as quickly and safely as possible.

Antioch College is managing a significant facilities issue impacting several buildings.
A critical boiler failed last weekend, leaving the Arts and Science Building (ASB), The Foundry Theater, and the Wellness Center without sufficient heat. Replacement parts have been delayed due to nationwide winter storm supply chain issues.
Here’s what this means:
- Wellness Center: CLOSED until further notice. We will announce a reopening date as soon as repairs are complete and the pool reaches a safe temperature. Memberships will be extended to account for the time we have needed to close.
- The Foundry: All public events and activities are canceled or postponed until further notice due to the boiler issue and a separate geothermal leak.
- ASB: In use only for essential purposes; very cold conditions.
We know this affects our community members, class schedules, and event plans. Our facilities team is making this their #1 priority. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.
Updates will be posted here. For specific event status, please contact the event organizer.
