Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, invites applications for a one-year Visiting Instructor of Mathematics in the Sciences Division for the 2026-2027 academic year, with a desired start date of August 17, 2026. The position is renewable for a second year with approval from the Office of Academic Affairs.
Antioch College is a Federal Work College with an applied liberal arts curriculum based on interdisciplinary inquiry and experiential learning. We are a student-centered academic community where students pursue a self-designed major through one of five interdisciplinary pathways, complete three cooperative education experiences with partner organizations, and hold on-campus jobs in work crews during study terms.
We are seeking a “teaching-first” colleague who is passionate about foundational mathematics and student retention. The Visiting Instructor will provide high-quality, high-empathy instruction designed to reduce “math anxiety” and build the quantitative literacy necessary for success across our interdisciplinary pathways.
This role provides a unique opportunity for innovative, applied teaching that supports Antioch’s core values of interlinking scholarship and life experience, diversity, sustainability, and authentic community engagement.
Responsibilities:
Antioch College operates on an 11-week quarter system (Fall, Winter, Spring). The Visiting Instructor will teach the equivalent of two 4-credit courses per term (24 credits per year), focusing on developmental and early college mathematics. Key duties include:
- Instruction: Deliver the core mathematics curriculum, including:
- MATH 080 & MATH 090: Developmental sequences requiring high levels of engagement with students
- 100-Level General Education: Courses for both STEM-track and non-STEM students (e.g., Explorations in Mathematics, College Algebra, and Introduction to Statistics)
- Student Support: Hold tutoring hours and coordinate student success resources with the Office of Student Life
- Placement: Work with the Office of Academic Affairs to support mathematics placement testing for all incoming students
- Community Engagement: Participate in community governance and campus initiatives as a member of the faculty
Qualifications:
We are seeking a candidate with a demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching students who may struggle with math, rather than a research-focused academic. The required attributes include:
- Minimum Education: A Master’s Degree (MA/MS) in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field (which must include at least 18 graduate credit hours in Mathematics)
- Teaching Excellence: Demonstrated ability to teach developmental and introductory mathematics with an inclusive, student-centered approach
- Course Coverage: Ability to teach Introduction to Statistics utilizing RStudio or Python, as well as developmental and general education mathematics courses
- Mission Alignment: A commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment for students from diverse mathematical backgrounds
