SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Student Success & Academic Resources serves as the primary staff resource for academic support services to foster student success, retention, and persistence in a small college environment. The position coordinates academic student support programs and services, including peer tutoring/mentoring and academic accommodations, oversees a centralized academic student support center in collaboration with key partners, and provides individualized guidance and coaching to students. The Assistant Director responds constructively to a wide range of student concerns, all of which contribute to student success and conditions for learning. This full-time position reports to the Dean of Students and Community Life.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Academic and Student Affairs
- Collaborating with Academic and Student Affairs colleagues to provide holistic support for students.
- Primary responsibility for supporting students with Accessibility Services, including creating, updating, and maintaining the accommodations policy and process, as well as supporting students through the process of pursuing an evaluation or gaining documentation to determine presence of disability.
- Primary responsibility for supervising peer tutoring/mentoring programing, including scheduling, evaluation, and coordination of peer tutors/mentors, in partnership with academic affairs.
- Primary responsibility for overseeing new student orientation (fall and winter terms), including chairing the Orientation Planning Team.
- Co-facilitating First Care, a network of faculty and staff who meet regularly to identify, monitor, and provide holistic support for students; primary responsibility for maintaining the student success case records and monitoring processes.
Center for Academic Support Services (CASS)
- Primary responsibility for overseeing a centralized Center for Academic Support Services offering peer tutoring, accessibility accommodations, student coaching, study space, Writing Center, and faculty advising support.
- Collaborating with faculty and staff colleagues to ensure a high level of support for all students.
- Collaborating with academic affairs to support general education skills and topic specific needs, including through peer tutoring/mentoring and a faculty-led Writing Center.
- Coordinating with the Librarian on space planning, scheduling, and reception coverage.
- Providing community education regarding accessibility accommodations, student needs, and best practices through a variety of means including in-person, passive, and online.
- Facilitating academic/student success workshops, events, and other supportive programming for students, faculty, and staff.
Individualized Student Success
- Empowering a diverse student body to identify and meet personal and academic goals by coaching them to explore their strengths/weaknesses, abilities, and interests.
- Providing targeted support and outreach for specific student groups including students of color, first generation students, transfer students, LGBTQ+, etc.
- Working with identified students to create a student success plan for maximum personal and academic success, particularly those on academic probation or suspension.
- Providing student success guidance, registration, and individualized assistance to students, especially to students who are on academic warning and probation.
- Engaging in individual academic coaching and skill development for specific needs
- Maintaining contact with students throughout the term, identifying support needs and intervening as appropriate to assist the college in meeting retention-related goals.
General Responsibilities
- Gaining and maintaining familiarity with all relevant academic regulations, policies and procedures.
- Assisting with student records management through maintaining the security and integrity of student records, adhering to FERPA laws and policies, and ensuring accurate student record retention.
- Assisting with co-curricular assessment efforts, including maintaining data and reports on student support services.
- Participating in the Student Affairs on-call duty rotation.
- Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student employees including Orientation staff and Peer Tutors/Mentors.
- Participate in departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings and committees as needed.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree and 3+ years professional experience in student support programming and/or academic advising required. A master’s degree with 1-3 years in advising and/or student support programming preferred. Teaching experience preferred.
- Proven knowledge of best practices and strategies to provide support and interventions to improve student success.
- Unwavering and demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Proven experience in coordinating/facilitating programs and events.
- Experience interpreting policies and standard practices that deal with information that is sensitive and/or highly confidential.
- Proven knowledge of relevant current laws, regulations, policies, and guidance around higher education accessibility and services (e.g. ADA, Section 504, FHA, FERPA, HEA, Title VI, VII, and IX, etc.) and understanding of relevant compliance record keeping and reporting requirements.
- Proficiency with using Microsoft Office software as well as Google Suite, and a willingness to update skills on an ongoing basis.
- Experience in managing projects and tasks independently; ability to manage competing timelines preferred.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills across formats (in person, in writing, by phone/virtual meeting, etc.).
- Excellent presentation skills and a proven ability to create professional, accurate reports and documents.
- Must possess the ability to accurately assess students in distress and crisis situations and provide sensitive, professional service in a calm and timely manner.
- Must possess the ability to work with a diverse student population.
- Must be able to occasionally work evenings and weekends based upon student success and college-wide programming and events (i.e. first-year experience workshops and events, new student orientation, visitation days, commencement, etc.).
- Must be able to navigate a variety of terrain, including stairs and rough uneven ground.
- Must be able to use computer and phone.
- Must be able to drive and have reliable transportation for both regular work hours and on call needs.
- Must be available for on-call duty rotation with Student Affairs team.
