Coming from England, Helen Welford arrived in Yellow Springs as a fifth grader. After meeting folk dancing a couple years later, she gravitated to Antioch and Red Square on Friday nights. Welford says the students welcomed her and she felt she’d found a place to belong. Her studies at both undergraduate and graduate levels were in art and art education. Professionally she worked in arts administration and Student Affairs at the University of Michigan. Over the years she has been involved in choral and arts groups and has served on various boards in various roles, primarily in the arts and in support of LGBTQ concerns. Welford has been active with the Volunteer Work Project at Antioch College since shortly before the College was closed. She enjoys working in her home studio, doing wet felting, and creating women’s period costumes.
