Antioch College mourns the passing of Robert H. “Bob” Devine, Class of 1967. Read Bob’s obituary here.
Bob served as president of Antioch 1996-2001 and as academic dean 1992-1995. He was a longtime professor at the College in the field of film studies and community media (1969-1981; 1988-2008), as well as director of instructional systems (1978-1981).
In 2002, Bob was recognized for his contributions to the College as recipient of the Antioch College Alumni Association’s J.D. Dawson Award. And in recognition of his extensive contributions and his unshakeable commitment to Antioch and its values of social justice and community governance, the Board of Trustees honored Bob with the appointment of emeritus professorship last spring.
“Antiochian hearts go out to Callie Cary-Devine ’84, Bob’s wife, and to his children,” wrote President Tom Manley. “As I did at the College’s recent commencement, I place a hand to my heart to acknowledge and thank Bob Devine for his exceptional leadership, and to wish him great peace.”
“Bob Devine profoundly impacted generations of Antiochians by living the values of shared governance through his teaching, community organizing and as president of the college,” wrote Trustee Shelby Chestnut ’05. “Almost anyone who knew Bob has a story of how he made them feel important and necessary to Antioch’s growth and success. I am forever indebted to the mentorship he provided me as a student and Antioch community manager, and the tools he shared are ones I use daily in my life. May we reflect on the ways Bob impacted our lives and work to create a world that is liberating and full of joy.”
Bob was one of the founding faculty members originating Antioch’s nationally known program in critical communications, film, and video, and served as chair of the program a number of times. He has taught film history and theory and the use of media for social change for more than 35 years, and has been actively involved in the fields of community media, public access, and participatory democratic media. His work in this field has involved the start-up of the Dallas, Milwaukee, and Manhattan cable access systems, as well as policy planning, system design, community ascertainment, and system evaluation for a number of access organizations across the country. Bob also served as the Interim Executive Director of Manhattan Neighborhood Network, the largest access facility in the country. Bob served on the Board of Alliance for Community Media, and on the Editorial Board and contributed to Community Media Review for several decades.
Memorial
The memorial for Robert H. Devine will take place outdoors on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 2:00 PM on the Antioch College Horseshoe in front of Main Building, under a tent. Organizers request that all in-person attendees be masked and fully vaccinated. The in-person event will also be live streamed here. A Virtual Memorial is also scheduled for Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 3:00 PM allowing those at a distance to participate. Details about virtual attendance will be made available through the College’s website and on Facebook.
