Antioch College and the Yellow Springs Development Corporation (YSDC) are pleased to announce a collaborative agreement to work toward the reopening of the Wellness Center. An announcement with details as well as a date for reopening is planned by the end of August.
In September 2014, the College’s renovated Wellness Center opened its doors thanks to the partnership and support of the community, and with over 2,000 members in its first year of operation. The Center, which features a six-lane, competition-length swimming pool, pickleball courts, group classes, and more, was designed with the Yellow Springs community in mind and was a central gathering place for the College, the Village of Yellow Springs, Miami Township, and members of the greater Dayton community. In March 2020, the Wellness Center closed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. With declining infection rates and increasing vaccination rates, the College has sought to pursue reopening with a new operating model that will enhance the Center’s role in the community and better serve its members.
The YSDC is a nonprofit designated community improvement corporation formed in recognition of local housing, business, and economic development opportunities that need a unifying organization to pull projects and constituencies together for collaboration, planning, and funding. The partnership with the Yellow Springs Development Corporation will allow the Wellness Center to continue to benefit the College’s students and employees, as well as members of the surrounding community while also expanding its economic and civic impact.
“We are excited about the opportunity to reopen our Wellness Center, which we believe is one of the crown jewels of our community, in the collaborative manner agreed to by the YSDC and Antioch College,” said Maureen Lynch, chair of the College Board of Trustees. “Antioch’s history
is rich with examples of ‘town/gown’ collaboration and this effort with respect to the Wellness Center will be a fine addition to the list.”
