Cutler Bay, Florida – Born July 1, 1927 in Newark, New Jersey to Reverend Clarence and Mrs. Violet Bleakney. Joyce attended Antioch College and graduated from Barry University. She worked as a legal secretary in Newark New Jersey before moving to Miami. She had a 40-year teaching career, starting as a substitute teacher working in the Hialeah, Miami Springs, and Miami Lakes area. She became a full-time English teacher at Hialeah High; and taught English as a Second Language at night. She finished her teaching career at Lindsey Hopkins Adult Education Center. Her love of the English language was noted by her students who gave her the nickname of “Mrs. Dictionary”. In her early retirement years, she travelled to China, Latin America, and Europe. Her last years of retirement were spent in Cutler Bay at Eastridge Retirement Community. She is a former member of Grace Lutheran Church Miami Springs and Christ the King Lutheran Church Pinecrest, the Great Books Group, and the AAUW. She is survived by her brother Burton Bleakney of South Carolina, daughters Barbara (Steve) Appel of Arizona and Kathy (Joel) Barber and grandsons Gregory and Patrick Barber. She is predeceased by her son (Timothy), her former husband (Robert Allgood) and siblings (Barbara and Glen Bleakney).
