Melody Neuman Cooke Obituary
Melody Neuman Cooke, 89, died peacefully on November 24, 2024, in Burlington, Vermont. She lived a vibrant life filled with adventure, curiosity, and love.
Born on March 6, 1935, in Flint, Michigan, she was the daughter of Gertrude and Russell Neuman. Her fondest childhood memories were of summers spent at a family cabin on a lake in Fenton, Michigan where she rode horses, learned to swim and fish, read books, played games, and watched the clouds take shape in the sky.
She attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where she thrived in the experiential learning environment offered through work-based co-op education. Although her major was Business, she pursued extracurricular interests in music and theatre. It was during her involvement with the “Antioch Players” that she met her future husband, Richard Cooke. They married in 1956, and later welcomed a daughter and son into their family.
While raising young children, Melody was content to stay home, sharing her curiosity and joy for life with them. In 1968, her entrepreneurial spirit led her to co-found Alden Associates, a professional recruiting agency, in Rockville, Maryland. Together, Richard and Melody ran the business for two decades before retiring in 1988. They formed a wonderful partnership with Richard managing clients and companies and Melody overseeing business operations and employees. In the early 1970’s, she guided the company into the emerging world of computers, replacing typewriters with word processors and expanding her skills as technology evolved from floppy disks to laptops and mobile phones.
Retirement marked the beginning of a new chapter for Melody, filled with adventures and new professional pursuits. She assisted her daughter launching and growing a women’s outdoor apparel company and supported her companion, Bill Emerson, in researching and editing “The Healey Book.” Additionally, she enjoyed a memorable winter as a ski school scheduler at Deer Valley Resort in Utah.
Boundless energy and an adventurous spirit defined her life. After retirement, she and Richard joined the “Over the Hill Gang” ski club in Summit County, Colorado. When the slopes closed for the season, they embarked on cross-country journeys back to Maryland in their pop-up trailer, reflecting their shared love for travel and exploration. Following Richard’s death, Melody’s passion for travel took her around the globe, where she gathered unforgettable experiences and formed meaningful connections with people she met along the way.
Her zest for life extended beyond skiing; she rode a Honda 100 motorcycle and piloted a Cessna 172 airplane. She had a passion for Healey sports cars and expressed her creativity through photography and graphic design, not to mention her colorful wardrobe. She loved music, especially country and jazz, and never missed a chance to dance.
Cooking and good food were central to Melody’s life. She took joy in creating meals that brought people together, fostering laughter and connection around the table. She encouraged her children to embrace cooking from an early age and took great pride in celebrating her daughter Carolyn’s culinary achievements.
Melody fully embraced life and shared her joy with everyone around her. After living in Maryland for more than four decades, she relocated to Vermont in 2010, where she continued to live vibrantly until her passing, enjoying laughter and long drives with her friend Kathleen in the last days of her life.
Melody is survived by her daughter Carolyn Cooke and son-in-law Thomas Lucas. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Richard Cooke and their son David Cooke.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 19, 2025, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Shelburne Town Hall at 5240 Shelburne Road, Shelburne, Vermont. Friends and family are warmly invited to gather to honor Melody’s remarkable life.
May Melody’s memory bring comfort to all who knew her and inspire others to live with the same curiosity and passion that defined her extraordinary journey.
