As part of our 175th anniversary “Then & Now” celebration, this month we turn our focus towards athletics. While we famously haven’t had a football team since 1929, that absence has never meant inactivity. Across generations, Antiochians have found their own ways to compete, collaborate, and stay engaged—often in ways that reflect the College’s independent spirit and values. This week, we’ll look at a few examples from the archives:
Aaron B. Champion, class of 1860: Champion moved to Cincinnati after attending Antioch where he became a lawyer. There he became an active promoter of athletic organizations. In 1865 he and others put together the Cincinnati Cricket Club, known as the “Resolutes,” and he was elected its president. By 1868, the cricketers had become baseball players, a game Champion advanced as a particularly healthful, distinctively American pursuit. His baseball club soon adopted uniforms featuring colored socks, hence the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Champion would soon move on to politics and served several terms on the Antioch College Board of Trustees, but not before he scheduled the team’s first game against his old school in Yellow Springs. What should have been the first professional game became the first major league rainout, which was finally made up 150 years later to the day.
Lowell Fess, class of 1915: Son of College president Simeon Fess, Lowell was known as “Red” for the fiery shade of his hair. He was perhaps the closest thing to Big Man on Campus in Antioch history, serving as class president and debate society president among other leading roles in the student body. He was also a top athlete and a starter on our bygone baseball, basketball, and football teams. In 1914, he led the Antioch College football team to a 6-4 record, the only winning season in the team’s history. After graduation he served in the First World War, was a founding member of the American Legion, and spent much of his career in Ohio politics, first as Mayor of Yellow Springs and later in the state General Assembly.
Women’s Rugby Team: In 1999 assistant professor of anthropology Melinda Kanner formed a Physical Education class for women to develop confidence and competitiveness in students. She settled on rugby to teach these ideas and promote teamwork. They played their first game against Wittenberg, a 23-0 loss, which did nothing to dampen Antioch’s newfound enthusiasm for intercollegiate sports. More games against other schools followed, along with Antioch-appropriate chants such as “no scrum, no peace” and “ask before you crush.” The rugby team garnered considerable positive press including a Sunday issue of The New York Times under the headline “What was won on the playing fields of Antioch.”
From early baseball fields to muddy rugby pitches, Antioch’s history reminds us that leadership, courage, and community have always mattered more than the scoreboard.
175 Now: Active Bodies, Engaged Minds
Antioch students stay active through Independent Groups (IGs) like Pickleball, which brings students together week after week for joyful, low-barrier play. Many also earn academic credit through Wellness Center classes that center movement, care, and whole-person learning.
The Wellness Center is more than a classroom—it’s a learning lab. In addition to taking courses, students gain real, hands-on teaching experience. This term, current co-op student Maaliyou has taught full-time, offering Dance in the Sun, Talk Circle, Freestyle Choreography, and Dance Audition / Flexibility & Prep to the community.
