Place, poetics and letters
We value the diversity of histories and stories, ideas and questions. We engage globally and locally, interrogating the boundaries of traditional canons, seeking to engage traditions beyond geographical divisions. We cross borders and examine boundaries. We believe that study of history, literature, philosophy open us to worlds of human experiences and provides us with a better understanding of ourselves and our world, its past and future, and our place within.
The Humanities in the Curriculum
At Antioch College, students create self-designed majors leading to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. The faculty in the humanities have disciplinary expertise and regularly offer courses in history, philosophy, literature, and cultural studies.

After Antioch
Students who graduate with degrees in the humanities continue their education in graduate programs in all disciplines, become teachers, work as artists, and pursue a variety of professional opportunities. Here are a few:
- Perri Freeman ’15, BA in History, was elected to the Burlington (Vt.) City Council in March 2019. Freeman is currently seeking re-election to represent Burlington’s Central District.
- Eric Michael Rhodes ’16, BA in History, completed an MA in History at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. During the 2020-2021 academic year, he was a fellow at the Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast at Lamar University.
- Jenn Wheeler ’15, BA in Philosophy, is a programmer analyst at The College of William and Mary in Virginia.
- Nargees Jumahan ’15, BA in History and Visual Art, is is an upper elementary teacher at Valley Montessori School.
- Trinica Sampson ’16, BA in Literature, is a support services coordinator at Foundation Communities in Austin, Texas.
- Angel Nalubega ’18, BA in History, was a co-teacher at St. James School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before enrolling in the Master of Divinity program at Princeton Theological Seminary.
