AI is changing the world at breathtaking speed, but when will AI surpass us? It already has in much of our society. We are slowly passing control in top management and marketing, in high finance and federal government, and in medical research and the military to the superior cognitive capabilities of artificial intelligence. AI is humanity’s greatest challenge.
On Monday, July 15, 2019, Antioch College will host an Artificial Intelligence Symposium from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Eichelberger Forum Main Stage at the Dayton Metro Library, 215 E. Third St., Dayton, OH 45402. Featuring US defense expert and Antioch College alumnus Jay Tuck ’68 and a panel of Dayton-area AI experts, including Dr. Amy L. Magnus of the Air Force Institute of Technology, the Artificial Intelligence Symposium will explore AI as humanity’s greatest challenge. This event is free and open to the public. A crucial topic of our times, AI could be a serious threat to humanity despite its enormous advantages. According to Tuck, “Artificial intelligence promises huge advances in science and technology — in medicine, in climate, in traffic, in city management, and countless other areas. It is also a very dangerous technology that needs to be limited.” The cognitive power of the human brain cannot match the capabilities of AI, which can ingest and analyze 200 million pages of data in three seconds.
“Every day we are relinquishing responsibility over segments of our society to it. Once relinquished, this responsibility will never return to humans,” explains Tuck. Discussions at the event will explore not only the applications for AI, but also the ethics surrounding its use. Following Tuck’s keynote address, the discussion panel featuring Tuck and other Dayton-AI experts will also take questions from the audience.
This Symposium will provide thoughtful discourse useful to Miami Valley business leaders and others in the education, engineering, technology, manufacturing, medical, and defense sectors. “Dayton welcomes this dialogue about the implications of artificial intelligence. US defense expert Jay Tuck ’68 was executive news director of the daily network program Tagesthemen on ARD Television. In his 35 years at the German network, he produced over 500 television segments. Tuck earned his BA in Economics at Antioch College.
He served twice as combat correspondent in Iraq.
