The Herndon Gallery at Antioch College is pleased to welcome the public to the opening reception of the WORKS Biennial 2019, a group exhibition featuring the creative vocations and avocations of the staff and faculty of Antioch College.
The immersive community exhibition will run November 1, 2019 – February 29, 2020, with the visual arts exhibition showcased in the Herndon Gallery opening Friday, November 1st, from 4:00-6:00 PM, just prior to the end of the fall quarter. The opening and exhibition is free and open to the public.
Spanning four months across two academic quarters, the WORKS Biennial offers many opportunities for the public to engage with the works and their makers. Planned throughout January and February when students and faculty return to campus, we welcome the public to join us in community for a series of Herndon Happy Hour events, including salons, artist flash talks, musical performances, performative art, and authors readings are planned The winter gallery flash talks series and performances will feature the artists in the exhibition and outside of the arts division. These fast-paced, image-rich “flash talks” will allow for a wide range of subjects and creative research interests to be shared in a brief amount of time, creating an atmosphere that is equal parts academic lecture and show-and-tell. All events are free and open to the public.
Works and artists in the exhibition from the Arts Division include: new and recent films by Catalina Jordan-Alvarez, Visiting Assistant Professor of Media Art, social practice performative work and photographs from her #pleasure is the practice ongoing work by Luisa Bieri, Instructor of Cooperative Education (Arts), collaborative drawings and paintings from his recent series, The Disappeared Place by Forest Bright, Visiting Assistant Professor of Visual Art, sculptural installation by Michael Casselli ‘87, Assistant Professor of Sculpture and Installation, photographs from his ongoing residency on the Antioch Farm and greenhouses by James Luckett, Assistant Chef at Antioch Kitchens and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Photography, performance and stage pieces from recently performed work, The Sympathy of All Things, by Louise Smith ‘77, Associate Professor of Performance performed with collaborator Selena Loomis-Amrhein ‘17, and a new and evolving installation and 2-channel film projection by Jennifer Wenker, Creative Director of the Herndon Gallery.
Works and artists in the exhibition from beyond the Arts Division include: contemporary/edgy cross-stitch by Becca Hammond, color pencil drawings by Penny Adamson, blown glass works by Amy Osborne, textiles/quilting/piecing works by Brooke Bryan, indexical photographic installation of the Pollinator Pathway by ecologist, Kim Landsbergen, photographs by Beth Bridgeman, conceptual sculpture by Tom Manley, woodblock prints by Shane Creepingbear, paintings and hand-drawn comic art by Jeanne Kay, woodworking by Joshua Miller, and graphic novel and comic art by Wakka Ciccone.
Performing Artists and Authors performing or reading in January and February include: Teofilo Espada (saxophone), Cary Campbell (vocal/choral/piano), Ron Napoli (original score for piano), Kevin Mulhull (classical guitar), Louise Smith (performance), Jennifer Knickerbocker (storytelling), Gariot Louima (author/flash fiction readings), Jeanne Kay (author/readings), and MaryAnn Davis (author/poet/readings).
The Herndon Gallery is located in South Hall on the campus of Antioch College. The gallery is open weekdays from noon to 5 PM, and Saturdays from 1-4 PM.
