Carol Emmer, 86, of Austin, Texas, died peacefully at home on March 28, 2022. Carol was born on September 30, 1935 in Buffalo, NY to Norman and Viola Huth. She had fond memories of childhood and elementary school in Avon and high school in Batavia, NY. After graduating from Batavia HS she attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Antioch’s work-study program was formative for her, as she encountered a diversity of people and perspectives in jobs in Chicago, Pittsburg, France, and elsewhere. After graduation from Antioch, Carol was employed in Besancon, France by Antioch College. After returning to NY, she worked for the YWCA in Rochester and at the University of Rochester’s Child Study Center. In 1962, Carol enrolled at the University of Michigan in a Master’s program in educational psychology with specializations in early childhood and special education. After graduation, she worked as a lead teacher in the Perry Preschool Project in Ypsilanti and later as a teacher in the Ann Arbor public schools. She and Ed married in 1966 in Ann Arbor, and moved to Austin in the late 60s. In Austin Carol worked in early childhood settings and raised their two children, Laurie and Dan. She worked as a realtor in Austin and subsequently for the Texas Real Estate Commission’s Continuing Education Division. She was a committed and caring volunteer for many organizations, including Hospice Austin, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and for the Obama campaigns. She was a Stephen Minister and trainer for many years. Carol was very interested in other people and always enjoyed meeting and greeting. She loved music, art, visiting her relatives in New York each summer, travel and, more than anything, hugs and kisses (real or Facetime) from her grandchildren. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend; her smile and warmth radiated goodness and caring, and she is greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents Norman and Viola (Tinney) Huth. She is survived by her husband Ed, daughter Laurie and her partner Delle of Estes Park, CO, son Dan of Manor, sister Judy Pliquett of Heiligenhaus, Germany, grandchildren Caden, Desirae, Jasmine, Olivia, and Presley, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family wishes to thank Carol’s many friends for their support during the recent months of her illness, particularly her special friends Jennie and Sandy, as well as the ministry of Jim, Carol, and Donna from St. Andrews. All of the support brought great comfort to Carol. We are especially grateful to Yvonne and to the nurses and other staff of Hospice Austin for their care.
