Max is a cultural psychologist from Hawaii who primarily utilizes qualitative research methods to investigate lived experience surrounding identity and identity development. His dissertation explored how queer identity and disability identity are socially navigated, internalized as values, and expressed through art using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach with a multimedia photovoice methodology (i.e., he used the art created by participants as empirical data). His other work has explored cognitive psychology topics related to autism, eye-gaze cueing, and theory of mind. Max has an interdisciplinary background not only within the field of psychology, but also across disability studies, art, education, and regularly incorporates philosophy and queer studies in his work.
