Fall 2024 Student Impact Stories

River Esquivel '26

You are about to enter another dimension. A dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, Antioch College!

My name is River Esquivel, and I’m a third year student at Antioch College. I wanted to take a moment to share a little about my journey here and how my experiences at Antioch have shaped my future.

My Antioch Journey

I discovered Antioch College through reading about one of my personal heroes and notable Antioch alumnus, Rod Serling. In middle school I discovered the talents of Rod and the unique world of The Twilight Zone. That connection has been so formative to my life, even now in my late twenties. After finding myself perusing the pages of the Antioch website for hours, completely captivated by everything the school offers, I knew I had to apply. That one choice changed my life forever.

Community: Learning Beyond the Classroom

I’m now in my third year, and the opportunities that have been awarded to me by not only establishing myself as an Antiochian, but also having such reverence for the Serling legacy, have been nothing short of astounding. In the spring I was offered a chance to write a piece about Rod, his wife Carol, and their experiences at Antioch for the Ohioana Quarterly. The opportunity came via Scott Sanders, Antiochiana archivist and resident College expert, who the magazine approached originally. The magazine, albeit rightfully hesitant about giving an undergrad such an undertaking, accepted his recommendation and worked with me. Being able to honor not only the Serling legacy but also Antioch College, the place that I now have called home for almost three years, felt like such a full circle moment for me. As of August 26th, 2024, I can officially say that I, an undergraduate of Antioch College, have been published in a major literary magazine. I’m writing to you today because I want future students to have the same incredible opportunities I’ve had. Antioch’s unique approach to education, that prepares students to make an impact in the world, is only possible with the support of our dedicated community of alumni and friends.

Please consider donating to our fall campaign today. Your gift, no matter the size, will help ensure future Antiochians can continue to benefit from the transformative experiences that made Antioch so special for Rod and Carol Sterling, and to inspire the next generation of creatives, like me!

Together, we can create more stories like mine—stories of students prepared to make a difference in the world, with an Antioch education that opens doors.

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension – a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. That key of imagination is at the heart of Antioch College.

Thank you for your time and for considering a gift to support Antioch College.

Warm Regards,

I hope this letter finds you well! My name is Vincent Wibawa and I’m in my third year at Antioch College. As a new term starts here on campus, I wanted to share how my time at Antioch has been instrumental in shaping my future. From the first day I stepped onto campus, I realized Antioch is such a special place. The sense of community, the commitment to social justice, and the emphasis on hands-on learning have all played a significant role in my growth.

The co-op program is a signature part of Antioch’s curriculum and has been the cornerstone of my Antioch experience here. I recently completed a co-op with Camphill Kimberton Hills, a nonprofit in Pennsylvania, where I worked at a special needs community that teaches its residents how to live more independently despite their disabilities. The residents are part of a land-based community that contributes to the wider society through agriculture, social craft, and cultural and educational endeavors. Through my co-op, I learned several very important skills including taking responsibility, learning to be a team player, going the extra mile to help everyone, and completing tasks to the best of my ability without praise or reward. I learned to be a team player by communicating effectively with my teammates to get tasks accomplished. Achieving our goals was at times challenging yet rewarding as many of my colleagues on co-op had developmental disabilities, an experience that was new to me. It took some time for me to develop these skills, which became instrumental in my success at Camphill. Finally, the most important skill I learned was completing tasks without praise. I will get a bit personal here, this was a bad habit I got from my father and thankfully, through the work I did at Camphill, I learned to complete all the tasks handed to me humbly and without needing to be praised.

As I look to my future, I’m confident that Antioch College has prepared me academically, professionally, and personally to go out and make a change. Political Science was, thankfully, an easy choice for me as a career. Growing up, I’ve always admired significant figures in history, from Presidents like Teddy Roosevelt to Generals like Napoleon and Patton. Each of them inspired me to want to make a difference. I believe that Political Science would be a great start. I hope to become a diplomat or ambassador for the United States and be stationed in Indonesia, which is currently striving to be a First World Country under its current President. It is also my parents’ home country, making this a great homecoming opportunity.

I’m reaching out today to ensure that future students can experience the same remarkable opportunities that have shaped my journey. Antioch’s distinctive educational approach, where real-world experience drives real-world impact, thrives thanks to the unwavering support of our dedicated alumni and friends.

By donating, you play a vital role in creating more success stories like mine—stories of students who are prepared to make a significant impact in the world.

Thank you for your time and for considering a gift to support Antioch College.
